my new ride

Actually, maybe you guys might be able to clear this up for me.
My bike is an 8 - speed..and it has 3 Gears on the left side, and 8 on the right side of the handlebar. When I was on 1st gear on the left, and in 8th gear on the right, my derailleur rubs against my chain. So I went to the bike shop and the guy told me if I'm in first gear on the left, I can only use 1-3 on the right. Which is for uphill. Didn't know that. Can someone give me a break down on what the other gears are designed for?
And also, instead of saying 1 2 3 on the gears, i have a triangle icon instead of the 2. =)

When your front three gears are used in the lowest ring (smallest) your bike should have some slight noise issues (derailleur rub) other than keeping the front gears in the middle ring. On large climbs, shift the front down to the smallest ring and have the back gears in the second to highest gear.
Wear the bike in for a few rides. After shifting the bike for a few rides, the cables are going to stretch a little. Good bike shops tell you to ride it and then come back in about a month or so and get the derailleurs adjusted for the slack you aquired. Once they adjust it, you should be good to go.

Yeah man, some dérailleur noise when maxed out on opposite sides is pretty normal. Theres really nothing you can do about it unless you want to do some real fine adjustments.
Mmade22, I don't know Brad. But I love my IH.
