Lic Plates with LED's

Installed the bulbs I ordered from Superbrightled.com. Not as bright as the Lexus lights but I'm pretty satisfied.

What do you think?

Same here. I don't want a *really* bright License Plate light. I like 'em.

Those are the WLED 4-LED bulbs. I thought they would be brighter. If I would have known better, I would have bought the 9 or 12 led's. Not complaining.

yea for a real bright look the cold cathode mod is the way to go.
But I personally like the look of the LED's. It has a very nice and clean look and its not too bright.

the LEDs I got look just as bright as the cold cathodes but is easier to install:

and to show just how bright they are, check out the light cutoff at the floor from the rear:

to the OP: not bad at all. were they blue or white?

Looks good Lyfe, enough where you don't need CC. I thought of doing my lights in CC (I have the lights), but haven't yet because I really don't want the popo zooming in on my plates. LOL! Plus it might mess up my stealth look!

They r really easy to do.... just remove partial the trunk lid lining (few clips, and one screw to remove), unclip the plastic light holder housing, pop the old bulbs out and insert the new one in, put everything back.... it took me <5 min in the dark to do this:P....

hello. For those who bought those LEDS from superbrightleds, those bulbs are 12w, and i took off the harness for the rear plates, and it says 5w. Will this cause any heat problems? thanks.

so currently inside my car i have 1led bulbs. I didn't know i could put 4, or 6. So i was planning on buying 2x 6led bulbs and then putting those two in the front map lights. and taking those 1 led bulbs and putting them in the rear for the plates. What do you guys think? will it not be bright enough for the plates?

Superbright LED's 921-x12 Wedge Base White LED is what I've got.

Using the backup camera, the light out put is good and clear (IMO better than stock). Only had them a few months, so cannot comment on long term durability.

I have cold cathodes, not LEDs psheu. At least that is what I was saying I hadn't installed yet.

I have no idea about the cold cathodes. but as long as the connector fits, i'm sure it's very easy to put in (even easier than the steering wheel ).

there r 5 round plastic clips, 2 strips of rubber paddings and 1 screw and 1 plastic latch cover to remove to un-attach part of the lining (leave the 2 round rubber stoppers and the trunk latch alone). after that peal the lining back and expose the back of the license plate holder. you'll see the top have 2 light housing. on each housing, hold down both sides of it and pull it away from the clip that holds it in place you'll get to the light bulbs. the reason i choose the led bulbs is b/c it's an even swap. with cold cathodes, the mounting might be a bit different.

I looked through the thread and don't see where you say which bulb and base or source. Can you elaborate?

Also, you pics look over-exposed; you can see the "burn in" around the side-markers. Are the pics an accurate representation of live and in person?

I just installed some 12-diode LED's in my friend's 3G today...They fit everywhere except for the lisence plates. For the lisence plate lights, I had to install the 9-diode LED's.

FWIW, the glove box and center console light bulbs can be replaced with the "74" bulbs from superbrightleds.com, but the base of the bulb housing has to be filed down a bit, and rounded off. (These are a bit of a pain).

I bought them at Super Autobacs, and the bulbs were the type 194 LED type.

The shots taken were at 1/15th second at F/6.3 ISO 400 on a tripod. They are as accurate I can get on a DSLR.

What is the difference between polarized and non polarized? The Wedge base 921-x9 LEDs are polarized and the 921-x12 are non polarized according to Superbrightleds website. I'am thinking of going with the 921x12 LEDs if they are brighter than the 921-x9 LEDs. The Luxer1 LEDs look awesome. It would be nice to have a Super Autobacs here in Washington and I would pick up a pair. I also found the Luxer1 LEDs on Ebay for $14.95 for a set of different sizes plus shipping for $12.50, but the peeps who are selling it do not accept Pay-pal. Kind of weary of that. Saw the back plate lighting of a Lexus the other day and it looked cool and would like to have that look. Thanks for all of your help.

I also bought the 9-LED unit and put that in the trunk. that should fit the interior domes no problem, as the 9-LED fits the trunk light casing, albeit with a snug fit.

Don't remember for sure which is which but:

One will go into the socket either "right side up" or "upside down" and still work (I think that's non-polarized).

The other will only work when it is "right side up" (I think that's the polarized one). With this one, you gotta make sure you've got the bulb in correctly before you put eveything back together.

I want to mod my license plate too. I like the ones used by sixsixfour. He mentioned 194 LED so I went to ebay. There were tons, but I have no idea which ones will fit our cars. Can someone take a look for me or all of them will fit? Thanks!! Here's the link

This one looks alright and would most likely fit, but dont quote me on that. its the reason why I buy retail and eat the extra bucks rather than get things online. unless its a shop i know, I cant vouch for the quality/compatibility, and never buy it online.

I was at Lowes and Home Depot today and I happened to find xenon 5w 12v wedge bulbs used for home light fixtures. Its the same as a 168 bulb. At Home Depot it comes with two in a package for like $6. I wonder how these would look in the license plate?

Nice pics but i think that the cold cathodes are a little brighter. I have them on my car. it wasn't that hard of a mod to do yourself and the cold cathode bulbs only cost like 15. Thats about how much a set of led's cost.
