Yesterday I was claying the boot spoiler. Some of it ended up cracking due to the rain from overnight.
I'm going to reclay it and begin shaping parts of the boot spoiler.
I was also working on the roof spoiler this morning. Lots of sanding involved.
The seam is gone completely and the roof spoiler is very sturdy. No flexing as opposed to the epoxy and the JB Weld.
More sanding to do... but will have an update later today.
It's time for school now. =]
Thanks for the interest! I'll be updating this thread soon, I hope. It's been snowing for the past two weeks... and we finally got a break two days ago.
(my car is parked outdoors since I live in an apartment on top of a store).
I'm surprised you remembered that!
I still have it. The sides of the splitter that I added were coming off after two months of abuse.
I might redo it and try to make the overall splitter look thinner...
However, I also have an entirely new design that I want to try to make from scratch. In my opinion, it'll look better than the s2000 splitter.
That project will come once I'm done with these spoilers though
I was going to make a custom phone-dock for my Nokia N8.
It would have allowed me to have my phone in Portrait mode, angled at 40 degrees (just perfect to poke around at while my arm is on the center arm-rest or right after I shift). It was going to also have a swivel, where I can rotate the N8 into portrait mode.
It was a very ambitious project. I drew several designs and researched ball bearing and spring loaded mechanisms so that I can "slide" my phone into the cupholder and close it, if I ever needed to.
However, I just recently scrapped that project. After some "real world" testing... my shift knob would have gotten in the way of my N8 being in portrait mode while in 2nd, 4th and 6th gear. I could have lowered the position so there was no intrusion... but the phone would no longer be able to swing into landscape mode.
(sorry for long explanation).
Hahah. I actually did need more tape...
I'm thinking of wrapping the roof spoiler in CF as my roof will be painted black.
The trunk spoiler I have not fully made a decision yet.
Hahah, I do what I need to do!
Unfortunately I can't do work while it's snowing and raining (at least with clay).
Yessir! I've decided I will CF the roof spoiler. I didn't think of doing the CF rooftop though. Maybe I will consider it now that you've mentioned it.
I was following that one member's thread as well (sad, I forgot his user name)
. It indeed was sexy as F***!
I haven't fully decided on the boot spoiler, but it appears the majority of the community says to color-match it.
I'm leaning towards color-matched or have it color-matched with the "edge/rim" left in CF just like the BMW I posted before.

Something to add to my spoiler projects... Which is also something to add to my rear-end.
Got these from forum member Sezniko, thanks!
Quick look at the sanding I did this morning. Again, still needs more sanding. Then once all the sanding is said and done... I'm going to need to fill any pits and what not with body filler to give it a perfectly smooth surface.
I will try to continue to work on the spoilers today/night and have another update soon.

There is a 2mm gap on each side, seen here. It extends past the window just by a tiny bit. Don't mind the gap on top, the spoiler is just sitting there with no bondage.
Just need to reclay and shape the clay.
You can see the clay cracking and shifting in the middle portion:

It's been VERY on/off with the weather.
During my reading week, I was in Hamilton/Toronto (3-4 hours away from where I currently live). In the morning, as I drove (Last Saturday), we had 40+mm of rain. Later that night it was followed by lots of snow and strong wind.
I woke up ready to leave on Sunday with more than half my clay gone.
Fantastic.
When I got back to town, in Windsor, the bad weather followed me. Every other day would be either rain or snow.
If I cannot work on my spoiler soon... I'm going to rip it all off and go at it from a different direction.
But I feel a bit bad not being able to fully update you folks with something. So, here are some "pictures" of what I was working on during the bad weathered-days this week.
I've been itching to show everyone this. So far I'm loving it!
Well, you'd have to deal with the teasers at least. Since it's not 100% completed just yet.
Above, at first was messing around and used plasti-dip to paint. Then removed it and it also removed half the paint. Awesome.

Well, sadly it keeps raining. It snowed randomly, even.
Today is a good day though. I should finally be able to work on that darned trunk spoiler.
This time I'm going to let it hardened for a few hours and work on the glassing right away. That way there should be no issues with the clay falling apart due to the weather.
Today I should also be installing the Cree LED reverse lights from JLC. Still waiting on my buddy to come back from Elyria, Ohio though.

Still debating. As much as I love the dotted LED look from the tails... I also love that clean as-is look.
I'm leaning towards removing the frosted diffuser. That way the tail lights I have will definitely set me apart even more than any TL on the road (once installed).
This? [picture from 6spd_twinz]
or this?
Thanks! It's almost done! I'll just need to buy some carbon fiber...
Thanks a lot!
Thanks! I can't wait either!!
My goal is to have it all finished [painted, CF'd and installed] in time for the CanAm cruise/meet in August!

Just removed the frost diffuser and noticed that it shows the back of the housing through the brake lens.
I'm a little iffy now... I might find a way to try to cover this up somehow.
You can notice it here..
Picture also from 6spd_twinz

I like seeing the individual LEDs at night like in the first picture, but if you can see the LED board during the day, that would bug me.

Video of my custom tails.
There are some issues with the tails but... it'll do.
Sorry for the quality. It's not the greatest as it got darker. Was shot and edited on my N8.
The N8's 720p shoots at 25fps and isn't entirely youtube friendly as it seems. Weird cause my dyno video seemed to be alright.
Also don't mind the trunk. There is quite a bit of tape residue stuck on the bumper from all that tape I once had on it.
I need some goo gone or goof off to take it off.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDAcxqi6d_A
Thinking about getting yellow 7440 LED bulbs to make it more yellow and give it that quick on/off blink just like the fronts.
Eventually I'm redoing my headlights. No more clear markers and no more switch back. It's going to be as yellow as my rear tails.

Couldn't edit that post up there so will say it here.
I have an issue with the lighting on my tails. ALL LEDs light up normally [parking light] but when the brakes are activated ONE SINGLE LED doesn't light up. Instead it 'dies'. That sucks.
I completely agree with you.
You can't really see the LED board behind the red lens, but you can see the corner of the inside of the housing. That really bugged me.
It took me a while to figure something out to do so I can "hide" it.
I didn't want to smoke the red lens so I did something entirely custom.
Details later. Maybe in a new thread about the tails.
Hahah these DIY projects is a way to keep us checked in reality.
Like going insane to make sure we can be sane!
It is a lot of work, well at least the trunk spoiler is.
And you are right, definitely all about patience... Which is why I removed the trunk spoiler. I couldn't deal with continuously working with it due to the on/off weather. Winter's snow is over but the spring's rain has just begun. We even got hail a few times last week!
I recall your roof, and I absolutely love it! Depending how my roof spoiler goes, I may follow your route with the roof!
I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us.

Two far left bottom LEDs seemed to have went out.
Going to have to perform surgery and see if it's just a wire or if it's actually burnt.
Damn.
Still have that issue with one LED not lighting up when brakes are hit.

So I never really got to update this thread. Oops.
So, back in April/May I was moving out of my apartment for summer and back to Montreal with my parents. I didn't have a lot of things but it was enough to fill the TL's interior+trunk. It left me no room to keep the front a-spec and my roof spoiler. So... I did what I had to do and installed it.
Granted I couldn't deal with installing a roof spoiler that was clearly unprimed and was showing fiberglass... so I had 1/4 can of plastidip and did the next best thing I could before I left.
Ignore the beat up rear bumper.
You may also notice the custom tails I did a while back.
Here's a video for easier viewing of angles and look of the roof spoiler:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae8-eYdKreg
And pictures:
Right before I left town.
Now:
My BOOT spoiler was scrapped. I was so freakin' fed up with the weather destroyin' my project. I didn't want to have to keep rebuilding it. So I made a really quick half-assed mould of my trunk. Then I designed a shape for my spoiler and started to make this:
Once completing that [putting each foam board from end-to-end] I'll be claying it to get a more definite shape of how I want it to look. Then it's 'glassing from there on out.

I didn't finish it. I had too much to do when I moved back to Montreal for my summer.
Then I moved to a new city [no longer living in Windsor, ON but Scarborough, ON].
During the move I forgot my mold+prototype back in Montreal... I haven't went back since late August [since I'm back in school].
Buuuut I have a new prototype being made. It's taken a new design.
It's going to be far much simpler than my previous design and should achieve the same/similar look.
I should be [hopefully] getting the exact lines and edges out of it soon. Hopefully it'll go well.
I'm on a really tight budget right now and have a girlfriend+anniversary next month...
Girlfriend #1 taking money and time away from girlfriend #2 =[

In all honesty, it would probably be faster if you were to get your tails done by ACK. I live in Canada so shipping it here will be a little more costly for both of us. But if you're interested, I can do the work for you. Just send me a PM and we can talk things out?
Thanks a lot!
--
So... I got the general shape of things with foam and some dry-clay. [dry clay sucks by the way].
I'm probably going to get some wet-clay or some bondo/body filler.
That way I can fine-tune the shape and get the lines of the spoiler exactly the way I want it.
Some parts are slightly off... but that's because I freehanded everything.
At first, I was thinking of having the lip spoiler hang below the trunk-line. Originally it would've been nearly identical to a BMW CSL. [as seen below]
(thanks eBay for the pic)
If I made the spoiler hang below the trunk-line just like the BMW it wouldn't flow too well with the TL.
So I decided to have it end just at the tip of the trunk. Similar to the TL-S spoiler.
Now this is just a mock-up with foam... as I'm in also searching for a vacuum pump and other materials.
But enjoy. Sorry for the long details.

love the roof spoiler and like your idea of the trunk lip. But man your car is looking so sloppy....i could never drive my TL around like that with the paint and bumper messed up....the rear sidemarkers need to be swapped out asap so they compliment your tail lights...and get a real type s bumper .

Thanks for the compliments!
And I agree with you on my car lookin' sloppy. It kills the look of the TL and I actually feel a little ashamed when I see other TLers on the road lol.
Rear sidemarkers are definitely going to happen in the future.
I haven't gone to getting my bumper taken care of because I'm just waiting to complete the full A-Spec and get an entire repaint on my TL.
Just gotta come up with some funds...
Anyone want to buy my kidney? I hear we only need 1....
Thanks a lot! Sorry though, looks like you folks have to wait lol. I can't seem to find a vacuum pump for a good price. And when I go on CL or Kijiji all I find are breast pumps LOL
Thanks! I wouldn't have ever thought of trying to make my own if it weren't for you!

I actually been thinking of changing my newly installed TYPE-S trunk lip...But what I am looking for is something clean smooth lines...I seen someone here selling a "Duck Bill" style wing/lip for the trunk...Now I can't find one of any kind like it. Sorta looks like what u are creating there...KEEP UP THE WORK!
NVM...here is the other link...I would like to buy one...Anyone?
