The underdrive is for cars with stereo systems no larger than 600 watts RMS.

If I decide to start modding, I will probably use these guys.

Genesis Racing & Development

They did a pulley install and custom tuned my Unichip on my '02 TL-S. Let me know how you like it once installed. I told myself once I traded my '02 TL-S for the '08 TL-S that I wasn't going to mod it. But I might do the UR pulley and a J-Pipe.

I went to Speedquest in Gurnee IL. and was quoted $90-$120 for install. Thats fine with me.

nope.once you get the bolt off installing the pulley and belt takes like 10-15 minutes.
the bolt is the hardest part you need (2) long exstensions, breaker bar ,crank tool and a a long pipe to put over the breaker bar.its really easy..

Thats kinda what I was thinking, my local shop quoted me $60 then when they put it in they only charged me $45 because it was so easy.

Of course you do need the Torque wrench which is why I didnt mess with it.

At any rate, it is a great mod, and well worth the money in my opinion!

I was also wondering if it would make a difference to upgrade ALL the pulleys? I was looking through the UR catalog and see a bunch of offerings for a 'pulley set' . Just wondering if it would make a difference (if they even made sets for our cars).

those other pulleys will only improve the look, but not the feel of the car.

those aftermarket lightweight pullies are good for drag or racing purpose only, not for daily driven as they will cause imbalance internal and damage in the long run.

^ So what are the pros and cons of having the complete pulley set? (assuming they even have one for our cars).

I eventually went through an alternator. Than a batcap. Than my Honda battery. Thought it was just time for those things to go, but come to find out the pulleys were slowly draining the life out of all these things at idle. Took off the pulleys and all was good again. What a terrible experience.
Even though this pulley that everyone is getting here is the stock size, just lighter, I wonder if those problems would still exist? Or maybe it was that my pulleys were smaller...can't remember since it was so long ago.
Yeah your problem was because you were using the underdrive pulley. The underdrive pulleys turn your alternator slower so it doesnt produce as much power to your battery. When you have a system and are pulling large amounts of current off your battery faster then you are replacing it with the alternator you run into problems. The stock size pulley, though lighter, still rotates at the same speed as your stock so it doesnt adversly affect your alternators output. I worked on batteries for my masters thesis in Electrical engineering and the more you stress the battery by charging and discharging the shorter the lifespan of that battery will be. Also, if you discharge the battery below its specified limits you will damage the battery. This is what I assumed happened in your accord when you went through the battery and the batcap. The underdrive pulley was causing the alternator not to keep up with how much current you were pulling from the battery. Case in point...never play your stereo system without the car running, or if you have a large stereo system do not using an underdrive pulley!

I believe every car stereo setup should be using a capactior or a batcap in the trunk to help reduce the stress on the cars battery. And in my opinion I would never do underdrives unless my car was a straight race app. I did the stock sized unorthodox pulley and I am very happy with the performance results. Hope this helps ya out!

The complete set helps more but not a lot. The main weight loss is in the crank pulley. The whole prinicple behind these pulleys is... they are connected to the driveshaft hense the crank pulley. They take power from the engine that would normally go to the wheels and uses that power to turn your accessory drives like the alternator and power steering. The lighter these components are the easier they turn, which in turn will save some power and let the extra power go to the wheels instead. People always claim of imbalancing. Well all Honda/Acura are internally balanced. Search this forum, there are tons of people who have had these pulleys for 50K or more with no problems. I have had them on every car Ive owned and never had a problem. I think they are one of the best upgrades you can do, and you will see a slight increase in gas mileage too.

well, i used to built engine for drag and road course so i know. what make you think honda would make such heavy pulley for, to balance out all the internal components. if i have to write all the details, it would take many pages.

the lightweight pulleys are balanced out to 0 so that it matches what honda has done. HONDA PUT A LIGHTER PULLEY ON THE 09 TL AS WELL!!!!! AND ITS THE SAME ENGINE AS A TYPE S

Id also like to know since youve built so many engines....why do u balance the internal components of the engine??... why not just throw on a heavy pulley to balance it??

This is convincing me to do this mod. Between what Fanatic and Tripn' said, I'm feeling much better about doing this.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this mod. After reading this thread, it seems pretty safe. I've driven Buda's TL with the UR Pulley in it, and it feels significantly better. I just got illuminated door sills installed this week, but I'll be calling Excelerate soon.

By the way JD TL-S, love the new Avatar !!!
