Turbo system for 3G TL

My cousin recently installed this turbo kit on his 03 suburban, and after looking at the kit. I realized this would be the perfect kit for the 3G TL. There is no need for an intercooler or manifold! Also, there kit are usually priced under $4000, and put out 30-60% hp gains.

I was interested in turboing my TL since the day I purchased the car, but was discouraged after finding out the manifold and head were one piece. The unique feature of there kit is that the turbo is after the catalytic converters instead of the manifold.

I wanted to see if I could get enough interest on this forum to see if I could get the company to mass produce a kit for our vehicle.

I know a lot of people are really interested in the Comptech kit, but the downfalls w/ it I see is the fact that it is belt driven which limits the boost and no aftercooler. If your not familiar with turbo, the only thing that limits boost is the wastegate and size of the turbo. With this kit there is no intercooler, but you can add one w/ no problems.

Here is a link to there website:

ststurbo.com

Here are some pics of what the kit looks like installed:

does anyone know how I can get my pics to show? am i doing something wrong?

Its an idea.. but common sense for me would tell me this not a good idea if you plan to drive in the rain. It would kill lock up the motor sucking all the water inside having the filter so low to the ground. Another thing that caught my eye is that these turbos get RED HOT. Look at what the turbo is against! The Gas tank!!

Also, that is part of their design. Since the turbo is so far back from the motor, it doesn't get as got as a normal turbo. That is why there is no need for an intercooler. It wouldn't be any diffent than your muffler and piping running next to your fuel tank as they already do.

I think it would be cool to turbo charge a TL... No intercooler and no manifold? that takes away some of the goodness (and performance) in having a turbo kit. I've seen some motor on ebay for fairly cheap, so me and my friend has been throwing around the idea of building a turbo kit for it... and if I blow it up.....oh well. But I'll be interested in turbo-ing a TL.

Thumbs up

There a some guys with SRT-10 trucks that have installed the STS-Turbo and they have not had any problems....It sounds like a Pratt & Whitney jet engine when it spools up...it will turn some heads

For people worried about clearance issues click on the HCI April 2005 issue titles Remote-Mount Turbo. You will see the kit installed on a 2000 Acura Integra Type R w/ optional front mount intercooler.

Okay, so I wrote the company and this war there response:

Mark,

Thank you for your interest in a turbo system from STS. Unfortunately we don't have a bolt-on kit for your vehicle at this time.

We get literally hundreds of requests for new vehicles each week. The number of customer requests we receive does help to influence which kits are built We will be announcing new kits soon and will post them on our website.

We will keep you in our data base and let you know if we decide to offer a system for your vehicle. Again, thanks for your interest in our turbo systems.

Thanks,

Okay, so if your for it or against it, just drop them an e-mail or give them a call. Wouldn't hurt to have more than one company out there offering a Forced Induction package for our cars.

The same could be said about bodykits, exhausts, rims, and our cars in general. Unfortunately if someone really wants your car, they'll probably end up getting it. I had a friend who had their car stolen from their garage.

Yeah but people attack engines the most. i've had friends cars stolen just for the turbo/engine setup.. It's a risky business

after seeing this thread on the 2G TL ... I'm so inspired to do my own custom turbo kit for the 3G TL, I'm going to do a little bit more research to see what kind of setup would be best for the car.

looking at this page...

http://ststurbo.com/fast_customers

I think it would be OK on a stock or even lowered TL.....no ground clearance issues to worry about.

Only one concern... RAIN.

I just dont see how a car can run a burning red hot turbo when it rains and especially when it floods. With such hot of an object, the turbo should crack with having water splash on it constantly for the distance of the drive. I just dont see how this setup is safe and in long term, worth the trouble especially over a Supercharger.

Folks on my site (www.ls1tech.com) have gone 9's with the STS and a modded engine. The kits work.

I guess I'm skeptical like everyone else. Water in the engine is not cool. All the vehicles on their site are 4WD/RWD. I would think that turbo lag would be monsterous, with all that long piping. But again, that's just my . I'll wait for a more reputable company to make a model specific design, especially for the $$$.

If you read the entire STS site, they talk about rain or water and the effects due to the turbo being located in the position it is. They had a demo video awhile ago, don't know if it is still there. And if ur driving in a flood, you prolly shouldn't be there...
