Turbo

So I have a 3rd gen tl and I've been trying to figure out if it could be turbocharged or not and I don't know if the engine cant handle it or is it because there's no room in the bay, but I want to single turbo my 3.2 nothing crazy, just a small turbo running about 8 psi. But theres no articles anywhere could someone help me out.

It is certainly doable, and folks have in fact done it, but it ain't even remotely cheap. I figure an easy $5,000 to do the job right. That said, if your car is an automatic model, don't bother, you'll toast the transmission in short order.

Ohh ok. Cause I have the 5 speed AT. Any upgrades you suggest doing that wont sacrifice my tranny. Like bigger throttle body maybe?

Adding a bigger throttle body without a different intake will buy you nothing. The thing is, these engines are pretty well sorted and the dollar to additional power ratio is really poor. If you swap out the J-Pipe for an aftermarket unit you may get a few ponies, but once again, the cost/performance ratio isn't all that great.

Not another one of these threads...

Just do what I wanted to do at one point. Tranny swap!!

gatrhumpy 04-17-2019 07:58 PM

Get a tranny swap by getting an S4.

Just buy a faster car...

what about a 6speed tranny? I have a 2006 Acura TL manual and was thinking to turbo but how? Kinda new to this

Buy turbo.
Buy intercooler and piping.
Buy waste gate.
Fab up manifold.
Connect turbo to manifold.
Fab up pipe and down pipe
Fab waste gate to piping.
Drill bung into oil pan. Connect oil feed to turbo.

Tune car.

wait it’s seriously that easy? I talked to like tuner shops and a lot of them say it’s to hard and like it’ll be soooooo unreliable

Can you weld aluminum piping? Are you skilled enough to determine where everything goes?

yea I have a welder and stuff, just worried that like I put like enough oil to turbo and stuff and not screwing that up

you're literally worried about the EASIEST thing...if the engine has oil and you correctly welded the bung to the oil pan and fitted the line to the turbo, the turbo has oil. if the engine has oil, the turbo has oil....big fat DUH!

you should be more worried about fabricating a manifold. there are two heads you have to think about, facing the opposite direction. you need to think about how you will merge the two piping. will you merge above the engine or below the engine? where would you put the turbo?? where would you put the blow off valve?

Fabricating is the HARDEST part, yet you fail to realize that....and are worried about oil...

justnspace 05-02-2019 06:19 AM

literally, you buy oil and pour it into the engine until the dipstick is full. that aspect of the car will never change....Because you've added an oil feed line from the oil pan to turbo.

but you knew all of this stuff already, since it's so easy...right?

Well I’m just new to turbos so that’s why I was wondering, I was going to have the turbo in place of the battery, just get a smaller powerful battery or just move it to the back, soemthing like that, still doin research on how others did it

justnspace 05-02-2019 06:53 PM

everybody is new to turbos...only a few have done it.

and it's just piping man! figure out where the pipes go and weld her up!

hope you have a way to tune it, first...before you do all that work. .

There are plenty of books out there talking about how to turbocharge a car and things to consider while taking on a project like this. I would grab one of those books first and go from there.

KN_TL 05-07-2019 07:45 AM

Forget the turbo and go with Gerzy Bear's SC. You lose your A/C but you will get support from someone who really knows these engines and their limitations in stock form.

I'm one of the people who has gone the turbo and if you think the initial cost is high, wait until things start breaking.

justnspace 05-07-2019 07:46 AM

if only i didnt need A/C

Midnight Mystery 05-07-2019 01:30 PM

Could you mount an electric motor to use for A/C? Similar to EPS.

peter6 05-07-2019 01:36 PM

There are 12V units and I've heard about retrofitting them into cars that didn't come with AC.

Quick search pointed me to: https://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com...ompressor-3753

But 32 Amps would be a lot of additional load on electrical system.

Midnight Mystery 05-07-2019 11:08 PM

Maybe use a lighter-grade, aftermarket compressor?

justnspace 05-08-2019 06:25 AM

look at the brains on you, wes!

Ren cool units from Australia. I think they have one with lower amperage use.
