So maybe since they can roar, they can't meow. The sound that would normally make a meow, resonates because of those htoid bones and ligaments, and results in a roar.

that's actually a reason why our car CAN'T sound like a 5.0 Mustang, but CAN sound like a G35 and why we CAN'T make it sound like a fartcan exhaust on a civic (even if the rasp reminds us of it.)

Will a more aggressive cam give the TL a deeper note? Or will it just give it the bubbly-ness like the stang? I'm not even sure what our cam options are for the TL besides a type-s cam, have never really considered it.

I actually enjoyed reading this thread OP, despite the pile of complaints from some of the readers.

I also enjoyed reading this thread. I am having a very hard time finding an aftermarket exhaust system I like enough to upgrade my stock exhaust. I removed my mid-muffler and it helps a little. But I'm not a huge fan of loud exhausts unless it sounds like a true muscle car. The video of the mustang someone else posted sounds amazing!

I'll even go one step further to say that ALL TL's with all the various kinds of exhaust systems, they all SOUND ALIKE! (give or take a little)

But not and IROC with only 225 HP! It has less horsepower but sounds a million times better.

Is it the wider pipes? Is the exhaust manifold bigger on an IROC? Does more cubic inches make the exhaust sound better?

Skip to 4:41 sec. and listen. (the best sound ever. Sounds exactly like my old IROC. deep.)
Btw, if you dont have a woofer on your computer sound system, you won't hear anything special

There are a large number of things that affect the sound of an engine. Here's a list of a few of them, going from biggest influence to smallest influence.

1. Number of cylinders. This is the biggest influence. 4 cylinders always sound different than V6s, V6s always sound different than V8s, ect. This is largely due to the number of exhaust pulses over a given period of time. A 4 cylinder engine only has two exhaust strokes for every one revolution, whereas a V8 has 4.

2. Displacement. As a general rule, a higher displacement engine will have a deeper sound. This is because the higher displacement means more air is being moved.

3. Cam timing and valvetrain layout. Cam timing can significantly alter engine sounds. For example, adding a cam with high lift and lots of valve overlap to modern car with a modern mellow sounding V8 can give it that lopey idle and mean sound of a 60-70s muscle car V8. The number of valves per cylinder also affects sound. Two, three, four and five valve per cylinder engines can sound different from each other, even if they all have the same number of cylinders.

4. Firing order. Engines with similar displacements and the same number of cylinders often sound different if they use a different firing order.

5. Intake and exhaust. Things like intake routing and intake resonators/mufflers can change the intake sound quite a bit. The same goes for the exhaust.

There's a lot of factors that go into affecting an engine's sound, so this is a really basic explanation. I hope this helps a bit.

^^ agreed if you are tone deaf, but if not then it'll sound awesome just like almost every other aftermarket cat back for out TLs.

what is your goal in bashing aftermarket exhausts for TLs?
if you don't like them don't look up video clips, don't buy one, don't read/comment about other people enjoying theirs

I was beginning to wonder the same about you ppl on here. Heck If all the exhausts sound as close as they do, I'd just buy the cheapest one!

huh? Just get that exhaust? me? What is O.P? I was not putting down a "lowered" car. I was frowning on the "slammed" ones.. I have complimented many people on here that have lowered TL's. And if you look around, there has been some that ended up raising their slammed cars back up to something more livable. So, whatever. I am a member because I have a TL and this is about cars and I legimately asked questions in the beginning that people like you have morphed into a freaking mess. Now, go away. Either contribute to answers or shutup. This place is about questions and answers. If you dont like the subject, then go away. Flip the page. And its not just about a specific car.. like an Iroc.

People call Irocs , ROCK. And I had that in the original post. And if you think its useless to know what really causes a deep rumble, then move along. But some of us like to know how the lower frequencies work and what causes it. If you just have nothing else to do, then go away please. You are not being productive to the original post. Which was mine.

OP... I'm saddened that you think my car sounds like crap

Either way, I love it... I know it isn't a V8, but I really don't think it sounds like a ricers car either. Thanks Bearcat for the

Chad... Sell your car now and get an IROC

Italiano...yes sir, True Dual...picked it up used for a good price.

Do I wish my car sounded like a 5.0 mustang with h/x pipe and flowmasters (THE best sounding muscle car out there, even an IROC fan should be able to admit). FK NO. I don't want to try and sound like another car. If I did have a V8 American muscle then that's the sound I'd want. There are plenty of reasons I'd prefer to drive my V6 TL too...looks, mpg, stability and handling and braking and gadgets and yada yada...

I wouldn't just buy the cheapest exhaust for the car because it might/might not add rasp/drone...the huge round tips look cheap to me, etc...there are many reasons to pick a particular exhaust or none.

OP, sounds like you married a heavyset girl and now wonder why you're not in the mood to fk her. Love the car for what it is, not what you wish it was. You're also highly romanticizing the fkn IROC, IMHO. Probably have some fond memories of the olden days when the pussy flowed free, gas was .99 cents, and you wouldn't get egged for your sweet mullet while out for your evening walk to "stay thin".

Hey guys, since this thread is probably not ever going to in the right direction...
when you install a catback system...should you resinstall your new system from the mufflers back to the jpipe, or start at the jpipe? Figured one way would make it easier to line up tips etc...or do you just put it all together and don't tighten the clamps till all the hangers are in place?

Meh, I just added the catback onto the existing pipe. No need to take off parts that are going straight back on the car again.

What I meant was, it comes in parts, right...that slide into each other...did you start "building" the catback from the jpipe and move your way back (sliding each piece in) or start at the mufflers?
