R-V6 Pre Cat Delete Hissing noise?

Just got the package today and installed it asap.
It wasn't as hard as i thought it would be...finished in less then an hour...
Everything fit perfectly, pipes were beautiful and no Engine lights.
All i am hearing is this hissing noise; is it normal for these pipes? All my bolts lined up and are snugged up tight...

Ideas? thanks!

:pofl: tell em... but dont worry fellaz Richie got u covered:thumbsup:
just how he fixed our problem

stillhere153 02-07-2009 10:10 PM

did you install just the precat deletes... if you have a hissing sound check the flanges are even and linged up

the precat deletes no longer have flex section they are straight pipes...

which jpipe are you guys running? because thats the only flex section left... I installed a set of the revised precat deletes and defininitely heard nothing

JD TL-S 02-07-2009 10:57 PM

OH NO. I am about to buy the special from Rich monday.

stillhere153 02-07-2009 11:04 PM

Relax dude its usually the flanges lol exhaust leak

greco9885 02-08-2009 03:45 AM

There is nothing wrong with my precat deletes

And jd, do it! You will be very happy!

Richie v6 02-08-2009 04:45 AM

Installed in less then an hour! How did you manage that. I would check everything over the new precat deletes have no flex pipe to hiss and jpipes have the update flex pipes. Which jpipe are you running, could it be rasp? Precat deletes have been known to cause rasp with after market exhaust.

stillhere153 02-08-2009 05:19 AM

Wow, I guess I skipped that part where he said he installed it in under an hour :tomato:

I don't believe em, the fastest I've ever installed them was 2hours flat (bforbrian's car)

It takes 1 hour just for the car to cool down

Just because you can't does not mean i cant.

The passenger fan takes what? 2 minutes to remove?
Front cat "4" 12 mm with a deep socket and a air ratchet? another 3 mins?
o2 sensor comes in what less then a minute with the right tools?
Rear sway bar comes out in 3 minutes; 3 10mms attached on; the 6 12mms for the towers...
then we have the 4 12s in the back which are just as easy...the o2 sensor maybe antoher 6 minutes...
Now the car is lifted up and the j-pipe is disconnected; 6 14mms that come out with an impact gun...how long does that take?
and the 3rd cat is disconnected another what? 2mins?
shields come out with a 1/4" air ratchet with a 10.. and the two coils in the rear...
All that was done in about 1/2...
install was even quicker...because of the slimness of the pipes.

I do cats on muranos in about an hour at work; where i have to take out the subframe and the cowl to take out the shields....\

And i just came back from work as well; car was only sitting for 10 mins...car does not have to be cooled down.

im sorry you can't do it in about an hour.

MichaelBenz 02-08-2009 09:06 AM

Took way longer than that for my car....its supercharged.

Oh.....I guess thats a bad example.....cause I did motor mounts at the same time....which was where the bitch came in with the supercharger being in the way. Handled it same way though....with the rad.

please be kind please rewind... I see now...:yum:

I'd let'er cool down tho... burns ftl

well like you said you used impact... so could it be when you tightened the jpipe to the precat the flange shifted slightly, and you know first wide open run you go it causing a blown gasket

I say drop it, replace the gaskets with o2 sensor safe gasket maker then keep ur index finger near the 2 flanges to feel for a shift as you tighten...

Harrisonk531616 02-08-2009 09:46 AM

So the gaskets that richie provides break easily? So the gasket maker will fix this problem?

greco9885 02-08-2009 10:34 AM

Richie provides OEM gaskets that are from honda. If you drop them or somethin, then there is a chance to break them

The metal gaskets are from honda; but i think "stillhere" is referring to the j-pipe gaskets which maybe distorted

stillhere153 02-08-2009 11:40 AM

^ yes those very gaskets (precat to jpipe)... I am not saying they are cheap, I am not saying they are good... I am just saying that I ran into this problem and replaced it with rtv or rvt whatever the hell its called (as per richie's aim message to me when I inquired)

some make threads, others talk to richie.. i find talking to richie solves the problem quicker than making a thread

or you could get 2 sets of v-band clamps and do a little cut and weld ;)... but there aren't any tig welders in NY :'(

RTV = Room Temperature Vulcanizing

I would make sure the flanges are lined up with the jpipe and gaskets have not been crushed. They are made of graphite which can be squeezed if over tightened. I checked and you only purchased deletes your last purchase. What jpipe are you running, if it is mine when did you get it?

Deffinately need to get these , i have not had any issues with these. only issues i can think of is the misalignment of the gaskets or the pipe (b/c they are straight pipes w/o a flex section) my :2cents:

I have a XLR8 j-pipe; how tight are those 14s suppose to be?

stillhere153 02-08-2009 07:48 PM

I wont front i tighten them with the impact gun and then tap it 3 times afterward lol, but I do put my finger to make sure they are flush

I would believe not exceeding 50lbs is safe enough... although impact gun does what 100 lol

minkl81 02-08-2009 11:19 PM

i think its not the leak. its just extra noise that comes with the precat deletes(rasp). i had the hissing too and checked with several different mechanics, but found no leak at all.

BLACKURA_NY 02-09-2009 12:44 AM

mine dont hiss at all

but i do get that heatsheild rattle when the car is cold....

to think about it, when i FIRST installed the pre-cats, i thought i heard a hissing too.. but it either

a) went away

or

b) i got used to it

i dont hear any hissing anymore...

i only get this noise when im on the throttle; but when im off at idle i don't hear it.

Feels like i lost some low end torque mayb the ecu is still learning

Harrisonk531616 02-10-2009 05:56 PM

straightened the flanges; still same noise...guess i have to live with it...

05_NBP_TL 02-10-2009 06:01 PM

maybe it is hissing from rapid airflow leaving the exhaust...check out Horsepowerfreaks videos on youtube and see if the sound compares to the M3's... minus 500 hp :(

That sucks how we can only make like >350 max HP in our cars huh.. :(

i know you know your shit, so...

you obiously reset the ECU ??

i would say it DEFINITELY took my car atleast 100+ miles to get used to the pre-cats

do you have your stock exhaust back on with the XLR8 j-pipe? maybe some type of backpressure issues ?

I have stock exhaust, I was thinking that possibly could be the case..

It doesnt really bother me, just kinda odd.. I only have like 75miles on my car since I reset ECU..

Although Ive been driving like a mad man for 75miles.. LOL

I wonder how long ECU takes to re-calibrate.. Also how much of a difference could it make?

BLACKURA_NY 02-11-2009 04:47 AM

it honestly took my car a few days to really adapt to it... and over 100 miles... im pretty sure mine made a slight hissing when they were new... maybe the still do, and im just used to it

you guys are only hearing the hissing with the hood open? or all the time?

Harrisonk531616 02-11-2009 07:21 AM

hissing occurs when im on the throttle; i reset the ECU and im driving like a mad man just like^^ lol...and i do have the stock exhaust back on. No one wants to buy my Xlr8 catback...i might just put it back on...lol

NedShneebly 02-11-2009 07:53 AM

just another Master Of The Obvious question, but is the hiss more like a whistle and happening between 2-3K rpms? If so, that's standard CAI whistle. Maybe it's exentuated with the exhaust mods.

no he's not talking about the intake whistle. its totally different hiss. precat deletes hisses like a exhaust leak when gas is given.

btw... op, i think what your hearing is the same hiss that i used to have. when precat deletes are pretty new, hiss is more noticeable and starts to tone down as carbon builds up in the pipe. eventually you'll get used to the hiss and will be less noticeable.

precat deletes starts to make more torque above 3k rpm, so if you mainly drive in the city, you'll feel less torque compared to stock. this was one of the main reason i switched back to stock cats for more torque below 3k.

NedShneebly 02-11-2009 05:23 PM

^man, even in the city I get above 3K fast if provoked.

stillhere153 02-11-2009 05:45 PM

lol :werd:... no but the itty bitty loss in low end torque makes city mpg average lower, and improves the highway

yea but i mainly drive in the city with speed limit of 35mph with bunch of photo radars and cops. 3k rpm isn't much needed to reach 35 unless i just wanna waste gas

yup yup...

pffpffpass 02-11-2009 07:03 PM

I have the same hiss, but it doesnt really bother me..

Im at 125 miles now.. I wonder when ECU will perform at its potential...

ilovemangoes 10-15-2012 11:27 AM

Thread resurrection!!

Got mine installed 2 weeks ago and same hissing noise upon acceleration. Thought it was exhaust leak and replaced gaskets but noise is still here?

Seems like it is common with the PCDs but any solutions found?
