Question on Exhaust Mods for 08 Acura TL Type S

Hey all,

I had a quick question around exhaust mods for my 08 Type S. I know this has been discussed in many different threads, although I can't seem to find one similar to my specific question.

I was looking at some modifications that would enhance the "feel" of the car, but also enhance the sporty tone (right now my Type S is stock). I'm not looking for crazy performance gains, it's certainly a bonus but that's not my overall objective. I'm looking for advice/recommendations on how I can enhance the sound of the car but not make it overly loud. I've seen some of the vids on youtube of XLR8 cat back exhaust, ATLP cat back, etc. but they seem to be fairly loud even with the resonators.

I have about $1,300 to drop, so again looking for some recommendations based on what I noted above. I don't want to necessarily "waste" that money, which is why I'm leaning on you all for recommendations

Search for jpipe and stage mod on oem exhaust. Plus you don't have to spend 1300 on it since you aren't looking for power gains or a craftsmanship exhaust.

the exhausts are fairly loud even with resonators...you could always purchase an off the shelf one and add a larger resonator to it but i doubt you would initially want to hack up a brand new exhaust (i hacked up my xlr8 one but not for a few years later when my other exhaust modifications increased my sound even more).

you should look into the "stage" mods since that would suit you better, they are meant just to give you a little more growl without performance benefits or being too over the top. much cheaper too

if your main goal is sound, then we have some easy low cost mods for you!

Sockr1 mentioned the "stage mods"
he's on the correct path by advising you to cut up the stock exhaust INSTEAD of buying a full aftermarket catback!

if you head to an exhaust shop and tell them to cut out the "mid-muffler/resonator" and replace it and weld in a straight pipe.

this should be only about $40-60!!!!
you'll get a louder car and wont be spending anywhere close to that 1200 that you have

You guys rock! Would adding an aftermarket Jpipe (XLR8 since they are local to where I live) be a good addition to removing the mid muffler and replacing the stock resonator?

jpipe adds performance and does pretty much nothing to sound

I actually found, with the MM delete, that the jpipe did change the tone a little. A bit more grunt/throaty.

I'm running rv6 v3 HFPCs, v3 jpipe, and the mid muffler delete on my stock exhaust and I love the sound. Because the sound is there when I want it and absent when I don't.

The TL was not a car I wanted to have that constant rumble in...

Looks like XLR8 v2 Jpipe is only $425, I can pick it up directly at their store. Might be worth it, also seems like there are slight performance gains (I'm seeing different gains posted by different sources). Mahar, do you have the stock resonator or did you swap that out?

Exhaust is stock except for the mid-muffler delete. Well, I've got quad tips too but that's got nothing to do with sound or performance.

The jpipe, aside from precat deletes or high flows, is like the most HP per dollar mod we can do. You'll like it, trust me.

Good to know, thanks. I also have the quad tips, although the inner material on one of the tips has chipped so it kind of looks like crap. I've seen people repaint the inner part, but I'm curious if people bother swapping out the mufflers with magnaflow duals or something like that.

yes, people swap out the mufflers for mangaflows.
its all experimentation.
I say you dont experiment tho, cuz thats just $$$$$ wasted...

for example; swap mufflers then realize you dont like the sound, so you keep playing with mufflers......to no end.

start with the Jpipe then remove the resonator and see where you're at and then go from there!

Thanks Justn, I'll start with the jpipe and remove the MM. Appreciate all the feedback!
