Is a non-stock "quiet" exhaust too much to ask for?

retarded thread is retarded, I know

Here's what I'm really getting at. I'd like to switch out the base exhaust for something a little more peppy, but not too "sporty", if that makes sense.

I've always loved the way G35s and G37s sounded with their stock exhaust. Quiet until you really got the revs up or are accelerating. Is there an available exhaust that will sound similar to what I'm describing?

The problem you will find is that "pep" is a result of "de-restricting" which involves removing cats and using a high flow muffler.

to get quiet you have to restrict.

On a side note the J pipe is a nice medium of flow and only removing one restriction.

Is that to say then that the G35 and G37 don't have a cat and/or use a high flow muffler? I can't see that being legal.

What if I just drill a small hole into my exhaust?

The Apex-i World Sport 2 or Megan Racing's Apex-i World Sport 1 copy will give you close to the sound you seek. Thats the sould i want too. I had this system on my CL-S6 and was quieter that a 350Z but mimiced the sound of their stock system. This was probably because of the fact that the CL had 3.2L vs. 350Z 3.5L.

If you want your car to sound G35'ish without actually buying one do the exact setup I have.
RV6 V3 J-pipe, delete the mid-muffler and have the Dynomax 24235 resonator installed in place of the stock one.

Exhaust note is awesome. Not loud at all when cruising around and zero drone, but when you get on it

Would you mind sharing video? Dont record it super close to the car or the mic picks up sounds we wouldnt hear otherwise.

Videos are in my progress thread the link is in my sig. Page 3, post 97. Not really the best camera for the job, as I still don't think it captures the true sound. Everything always sounds much better in person.

Right-on bro. Thank you Thank you. I'll go look now. I'm trying to get a smooth sound of the oem exhaust but at 10-15% more depth with the stock mufflers. Kind of a "sleeper" effect with the j-pipe. A good friend is a welder and has his own muffler shop locally so i have a freebe but just want to have the right approach on how i get to the sound clost to what i'm looking for so i can tell him.

J pipe made no noticable difference in sound, swapping to a Dynomax resonator made the biggest difference to me, not really a change in volume but the exhaust note got a lot more aggressive. I deleted the rear mufflers too and it's noticable at idle but not really loud til you rev over 3K.

Yeah, I can't give an accurate portrayal of what the exhaust sounds like pre and post j-pipe, since I had the j-pipe put in at the same time I did my dynomax 24235. I would have to hear a car side by side or drive one with a stock j-pipe to be able to tell the difference, if I even could tell the difference at all.

I just know with the j-pipe if you go with a smaller resonator you will most likely have rasp. I know I did around the 3k mark when I had a smaller dynomax resonator in.

Sounds very nice however, it's a bit louder than a 'G3x' style exhaust. My search for the perfect note is going to take forever lol.

Cool stuff Machine

Hmm, only thing I can say to make my setup quieter is to add another resonator to it or putting the mid-muffler back on. It's one of those things you are going to have to experiment with, but sucks if you can't do the welding yourself or know someone that can do it for you for cheap or even free. Resonators aren't super expensive, but having to use different ones, weld this in, take that out, starts to run up the price tag.

Remember hearing it from the outside and the inside are two different things. While the car may sound too loud for you on the outside, inside the cabin it is actually pretty quiet.

I don't have any videos of this, but when I had my j-pipe installed, mid-muffler deleted, and still had the stock resonator in, it sounded very much like a G35 and was a very subtle exhaust note. I liked the sound, but wanted it more pronounced so that's when I started messing around with different resonators to get the sound where I wanted it.

Cliff Notes: Get RV6 V3 j-pipe, delete the mid-muffler, and keep the stock resonator. The sound will be very subtle and not loud at all. See how you like the sound and then go from there.

J-Pipe does make a difference, just not a huge one.

^^^ I think it was actually the catback which made the aggressive tone, not the jpipe (although the rv6 jpipe might have caused the rasp)

If I could make a suggestion : Aem cai, RV6 V3 PCD's and remove stock resonator. Very nice !!!! no rasp !!!!

It sounds even better once you put on the j-pipe v3 From RV6 but then over 3kish you get some rasp....

If you want a G37 sound you really need to get a G37. However, if you want an exhaust that is more throaty but not loud then you want the Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust. It's guaranteed under 93 db.

I'm not looking for a G3x sounding exhaust, but one with similar properties in that it's quiet while idling and at highway speeds but a bit throaty upon acceleration.

I will check out the sound clip later when I'm home. Internet at work is crawling, we're running bare bones at the moment due to the hurricane.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Seeing as it's not a Type-S, track car, or a car I'd like to turn into more of a sports car I think I'm going to stick to the stock exhaust system and weld on a set of quads.

That being said, the Tanabe is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, but unfortunately at a steep price. I guess you have to pay when you get exactly what you're looking for.

I have a tanabe and got it from bm @ a great price, Keep a eye out for one. Sound clips dont do it justice, people like the sound of it more than a g35, well people that have heard it in person. Good luck!!

I'm fairly certain CT-E discontinued their exhaust. They have discontinued the majority of their exhaust systems.

XLR8, or anyone that knows for that matter:

How much louder is the XLR8 system than the Tanabe system?

Originally was interested in the Tanabe but over time I started to like the resonated XLR8 better. Any input?

I've heard the XLR8 in person but not the Tanabe. The XLR8 is definitely much louder than the Tanabe in my opinion. I can't say for sure since I haven't heard both in person to compare but judging by the sound clips I've found online it seems like it is.

It's hard to say exactly but the XLR8 exhaust is more throaty and is probably a few decibels louder. It will also have a bit of interior noise while cruising whereas the Tanabe is really quiet inside the cabin and slightly throaty at wide open throttle.

That's what I figured but I haven't ever seen anyone really compare the two. Thanks

Same as me other than my J-pipe is an XLR8 v2. You can actually hear my car at idle now, part and full throttle sound pretty good and it's pretty much dead silent at cruising speeds. I drive 30,000 miles a year and any drone would drive me insane. Plus a long tube j-pipe will give you better gains than an exhaust.

Gave a buddy of mine who has an Audi Q5 and after riding in my car, he asked "what can I do to my car to make it sound like yours?".
