just as the title says....is it necessary to wait and let the engine cool off to a really low temperature before installing a cold air intake?

If you need to remove the coolant line you'll want the motor to be ice cold.

actually the temperature doesn't have to be ice cold, I drove my TL for close to 1/2 hour before the installation, by the time I had the wheel off , tire well liner off, had started removing the rivets and started taking the OEM air intake I was able to dissconnect the lines and the fluid was still warm to the touch but not under pressure or hot.
Just keep a few towels ready for the drops that wil spill out and have the AEM lines ready to put them on as you are re moving the stock ones, I did alone but if you have a second set of hands it would help a lot..

just clamp the hose when you pull it. no need to take the coolant off like the aem instructions mentioned.

Better safe than sorry to have the car cool. The guy is 17 and thus probably doesn't have a lot of experience under the hood of a car. If he did he wouldn't be asking this question. To avoid the potential risk of burning yourself, just wait till the car is cool.
