Is my exhaust legal

I have xlr8 j pipe and race pipe and I am installing a comptech catback Tom. I was wondering since the cops are horrible and I've gotten exhaust tickets before in my old car is if it is legal. Is there a statement I can say to the cop if he/she wants to be a doushe and pull me over for exhaust by saying it's legal because the catback only gives...x amount decibles!? Anyone know what decibles I would put out or what is the legal amount? I live in nj btw.

most cops around here cant actually measure db rating, so i would think the case should be dismissed in court

Our cars are cAli ready with 3 cAts. Still have front two. Removal of one shouldn't matter.

theres is no sensors on the 3rd cat, so it doesnt really matter whether it is removed or not...the only thing that could be illegal is noise...depending on how loud it is..now they're pricks and will pick at u for anything, even as simple as having aftermarket mufflers...now can they prove that? no!
no cop that ive known knows every car's muffler flow capacity, design, chamber size, inlet size, outlet size, type, sound level etc, so in the end its still bullshit..to them writing a ticket is what counts, not proving u wrong.
i think noise level is 90 db at 100 ft

if ur not too loud and obnoxious with ur exhaust sound, chances are u will get by...being that ur in a TL, and they don't really single them out much..now if u were in a STI or EVO, or a CIVIC, even if they sound lower than ur TL, theyll look at you twice..

and then you got those cops that just pick at u for anything..especially at the end of the month.

The Comptech Exhaust is CARB approved so it shouldn't be an issue. As well in traffic it's not loud, its pretty calm. But as soon as you step on it, it's sounds like a completely different system! I doubt cops will hassle you for it

It is ILLEGAL to alter any Catalyst on a car, the only time you may replace one is if the previous one has failed.

Yes, removing that cat is very illegal. Just moving it an inch downstream away from the engine is illegal.

Don't know about the decibel limit in all areas but I know in CA even if it's quiet but straight through, they can get you for that. Cops would have a stick they put in there if the muffler is at the rear of the car and if it went through it was illegal even if the car was quiet as stock.

If your in Jersey, your going to have problems at the inspection station. I know this as I've worked for the inspection station. The second the inspector takes the cat mirror and looks under your car, you will fail for altering your exhaust system. A higher flowing cat in place of the race pipe is fine, but not the race pipe. That will fail inspection.

you may be able to get away if you put the heat shields back over the cats so it looks like they are still there...

I don't think anybody in New York cares about the California Air Resource Board. CARB is strictly Cali, nowhere else.

And +1 on cat removal. At least in cali, doesn't matter if your car comes stock with 8 cats, removing one is illegal.

thats right...even though i did say that it doesnt matter if u removed the last cat, i was speaking from emission requirement point of view. 3G TL met and exceeded CARB requirements, and California has the strictest. In another state, having one cat on the car could make it meet the states emission requirements. It just all depends. They do however apply CARB to every car made for the US market. It is however true that altering anything that has to do with emissions is illegal. It would be a lot worse if every other state adapts CARB entirely.

At least here...if you have 3-4 cats and took one out, it wont be that big of a problem and no one's gonna bust ur chops. Now Catless is a whole different ball game if u get caught
