J&R Turbo and Cats

I failed visual for no cats. The shop I used was the same place that has the dyno and I understand their perspective. I was told they will pass it as long as there is a cat in place.

To get through this year, I am going to just throw on the stock cat and get the sticker and fab up a test pipe for the dyno run.

But I am considering getting a high flow metal cat and just leave it on.

Am I crazy?

I probably could, but I am considering the cat because the exhaust smell sticks to everything. I don't mind it but it is offensive to some.

Putting a cat on and off once a year to get inspected isn't a major deal for me.

Lucky guy here in cali I have to completely remove the turbo kit and put the car back to stock to pass smog. Luckily I have all the stock cats and pieces to do that but it's going to cost me $$$.

KN I can loan you the stock 3rd cat if you need it or sell you my hi flow 3rd. (pro-cat)

My only concern about you running at cat is the back pressures effect on AFR and your tune. If you haven't had the car tuned I would wait until your inspection is done first.

I have all my parts. Just don't want to go through all the hassles of taking everything out.

They will pass it as long as it has one cat. I am going to drive it the 15miles to the shop and back very mildly to get it inspected.

Then I'll put the test pipe in and get it tuned. My re-inspection is Friday and the dyno date is postponed to next Thursday.

Thanks for all the offers. I'll let you know if I need anything

Gota pay to play, but it's worth it to have the looks of the TL and the power of a supercar . The police don't look twice it's just one of a million TL's driving around.

Ditto that, When i drive my roush mustang it seems like i get pulled over all the time, and cops stare at me in the car! with the TL-S i rarely get looked at and they definitely dont have a eye out for this type of car

fortunately here in WI there is no visual inspection

PM me when the time comes and I can probably help you with smog.

About running it full time.... I've never done it on a TL. But when my car was pushing about the same power I tried a high flow cat. That was when I learned that "high flow" was a relative term. Higher than a stock convertor but far from high flow.

It will hurt your spool and it will hurt your power. I lost 6psi of boost and had to adjust the wastegate to get it back. I forgot to ease into it slowly once I removed the cat and it buried the gauge at 30psi. Keep in mind it will change your tune.

Really the only way it's going to come close not killing performance is to run 2 HF cats in parallel in the 3rd cat location.

If you guys search around hard enough I bet you can find a place that will make your car pass inspection. This was something I took into consideration back in November. Lucky for me, my inspection is up this month and my install will be next week. So I have one year before another inspection.

However, Ive been lucky enough to find a place that will make my car "pass" inspection catless.

I agree, The TL is a true sleeper and I never got pulled over in it. I drive an EVO X now and the massive wing in the back attracts the wrong attention a lot of times. That and I just put in a greddy se exhaust...

KN, I have a cat that I can give you from my old 3G TL. I removed it and its been sitting in my closet ever since, no use for it as my TL was stolen in December. It is the front cat. You can most likely empty it out to pass visual inspection and keep it there.

ok, I'll just plop in the stock cat once a year, stay out of boost, get the sticker and replace it with a test pipe.

I don't think there's enough room to put two in parallel.

Thanks!

Thanks for the offer. I am all set at the moment but will keep you in mind.

I think my aftermarket exhaust and possibly the smell attracts run up's from behind. I had a kid in a WRX do that with his girl in the other seat. Had fun watching him get smaller in my rearview. Let him catch up and do it all over again.

The funny part is, when I was at the shop, I was asked if I was all set for Friday and I said I needed to get my inspection handled first and then will do the tune.

I was fully prepared to rip out the exhaust piping and get the stock stuff back in. The son told me if I had 3 cats, then I need at least 2 of the 3. I talked to his father, he said put one on and they'll pass it.

Putting on the stock cat and shortening my catback is very easy. So I dodged a huge amount of work. Thankfully I can do a lot myself and don't have to pay a shop for things like that.

ATLP used to sell a test pipe that had the brackets for the cat's heat shield. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Screw the cat idea.

I just took my exhaust off, decided to fire it up. Throttle response is SO much better. I've got a full flowing 2 1/2 to 2 1/4 exhaust and it's obvious that it could be better.

no, it's dual. One my first mods was to do a catback. I went larger than stock but at the time it didn't cross my mind that I would do a turbo.

That's good. I was wondering how it spooled at all.

This is a great example of why overkill is so important with the turbo. Dual 2.5" or single 3" will do the trick as long as you have straight through mufflers. You will love the sound if you do stainless piping with the straight through mufflers. This will give it a nice whistle through the exhaust during normal driving (no boost) just like it does with open exhaust but quieter.

Later down the road, if you get bored you can fab up an all aluminum pipe from the airfilter to the turbo. In 4" it seems to really amplify the compressor whistle.

Are we talking about dual exhaust? If so how and can you take a pic? My car seems slower with the cutout open, very intimadating but slower or the same.
I need to go 3+ inch exhaust, but I love my quads am not ready to part with them.

It's not a true dual, just the stock config, 3 mufflers. 2 1/2" thru one to the Y pipe. Then goes down to 2 1/4" thru the 2 mufflers and out.

You don't feel a difference if throttle response from idle? With the restriction, there is a bog or hesitation. Without it, the engine revs immediately.

With reduced backpressure, can I expect lower or higher A/F? I'm assuming higher (leaner). Anything else thrown off by changing the exhaust?

So many things to do, so little money left.

I see you are still running the stock exhaust. I guess my quads are already somewhat free flowing.

I know what your saying about cash flow, I paid property taxes, my install and a million other things all at once and the bank called saying someone is emptying your accounts.
Add to that I'm holding on to the supercharger just incase, so that's alot of money tied up in the car.
