Improving aerodynamics for highway MPG
Improving aerodynamics for highway MPG
i've been hanging out on ecomodder and saw people making some ridiculous body modifications to their 4 bangers, and i kinda liked the boattail civic :P
anyway, i came down to, what i can do to my car would be
1. smooth belly
2. aero-wise "better" mirror (or shape mod)
3. top of the back windshield or tip of the trunk where lip spoiler goes but there's no way on earth i'm gonna put those palm-sized airtabs on the sexy lines of TL
i'm not going chop off c-pillar and making it fastback or anything like that due to lack of skills and balls, plus if i'd mod any exterior it'd be the face.
but i was interested in complete belly pan with smooth "hills" in front of tires instead of plastic stock plates, and the aforementioned ugly huge airtabs in place of splitters help reduce drag(and/or lift) but doesn't drastically increase downforce, on a prius. (how the heck did he measure "no increase in downforce"? beats me
)
also smaller mirrors did make me go "oooh?" cuz when I had to race a 1 liter (naturally aspirated) CAR, i folded the mirrors and top speed went up from 102mph to 105mph lol i was literally standing on the gas GO FASTER GO FASTER GO FASTER GO FASTER, and 25mpg @ full throttle at full speed
also those BMWs with little notches on top of the rear view mirrors must mean something, unless BMW decided to spend money on looking pretty (They're not that pretty)
they look somewhat like evo FQ series' vortex generator .
(i heard FQ stands for fcking quick lol)
I liked the mirror on the TL with project m(u) brake. the,, one with evo 8 roll cage and canards and sick body kit.
and lastly,,, i'm very curious (but doesn't know a crap) about vortex behind a car, but when i had chrysler 300 normal version and SRT8 with rear "spoiler",, which the said spoiler increases downforce by 40% (i just took it as "the stock trunk has 0.001N downforce so the spoiler must generate 0.0014N), anyway.
the normal 300 had much more mist behind the car than SRT8,, ride height? maybe. i don't know.
but lower mist means lower vacuum thus lower drag right???
speaking of TL, i don't see much mist behind me, but there's noticable amount on the side not directly behind. maybe because of door handles and mirrors...
if i had a friend with open wheel (such as lifted truck) i wanna make him drive in rain and get another friend to drive my car behind it maybe it'll work like "wind tunnel" hahaha
instead of tumbling with priuses and pontiac fireflys, thought i should ask TL people.
oh and,,, for the track peeps like vill, one of the ecomodder mocked up his belly using stock bolts and holes with cardboard and just chop chopped it with lexan and nailed it with bumper, and then bolted it down, to gain 2mpg. maybe if it's THAT easy, instead of the cool looking aluminum pan, that would be doing-worthy right? although i think there's not gonna be much gain because we already kinda have NOT PAN, but belly gap filler,
also I think it'd be pretty easy to just staple thin plastic boards to make "wings" for lower A arm :P like F1.
already beaten TSX, i'm aiming for 35-40mpg hwy so i can laugh at 4cyl cars and possibly prius
constructive criticism is very much appreicated (not to my writing -_-)

we have two threads on this!!
Here's one:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13610288
and the other is your buddy Vill069's documented race build.

yeah the other aero thread is pretty dead so I would try to bring that back and post there.
There's lots that can be done to reduce the drag on the TL, which doesn't have a ton to begin with but I can help with some ideas if you need some.

I've been weighing in on this in other threads. It's all speculation till someone begins the fab process and starts getting viable data.
As soon as my build finally gets done I'm going to start fabrication on some undertrays and see about a rear diffuser to start with. Underbody turbulence is a major issue with any car
