help!

I just bought a 2004 TL and i have some extra cash to spend from selling my truck so i was wondering what i could do to make it a bit quicker?

I know a cold air intake would be good and so would an exhaust but i just dont know what kind of cold air and exhaust i should get. im really new to the whole small car thing. I had an 07 Ram 2500 with a 12" lift and a 6.7L cummins so this is a lot different lol

any help would be appreciated!

AEM or Injen cold air intakes...whichever u can get a good price on...
you can do a catback exhaust.... there's also hi-flow cats, or cat deletes, as well as a J-pipe, from ATLP or rv6 i believe...those release some decent power from the TL's motor, you can get an Unorthodox racing light weight crank pulley... these are simple bolt ons... another way is to go with boost...either a supercharger from comptech..or the newly designed turbo ready to go in production...check out the turbo feeler thread, as well as the turbo thread...

Goodluck...search around the forum and see what ppl have done

how much money do you have to spend?

Top upgrades (in order of preference):

XLR8 J-pipe, the factory one is very restricitive, with this one you gain tons of TQ between 3000-4000 RPM's

Comptech/Progress Rear Sway Bar, this upgrade helps reduce body lean when cornering, not much of a change in harshness in the ride, feels like OEM but without the roll

AEM COLD air Intake - gives the best power and sound out of all the intakes, I rank it 3rd since it's costs quite a bit for the 5 or so WHP gain.

P2R Spacers - the spacers isolate the hot motor from the intake manifold and Throttle body a bit so they don't get as hot, so the air stays cooler when entering the combustion chamber for some more HP.

Pre-Cat Deletes - Somewhat illegal since it's against the law to tamper with the catalysts, however it has some good gains to it. RV6 sells them, however doing this with a factory J-pipe and exhaust won't give you very good gains. (keep the 3rd one, removing it makes no difference really unless you are after every single HP you can gain)

A bit more expensive:
Exhaust - the comptech one sounds nice and classy, quite when cruising and loud at WOT. It's nearly 1100 dollars, but worth it. The one that ties with is is the ATLP one, if you can find it, very nice sound and very nice power gains as well, price is near around the 1K mark.

Engine work - stuff like a port and polish, lightweight TL-S cams, etc.

Of course, there is the free stuff
Removing weight, take a look at the TL diet thread:

a j-pipe won't void the warranty on anything really, the same with the cat-back exhaust. Greddy EVO2 is great if you want something loud and VERY free flowing. The comptech exhaust IMO is one of the best out there, it's very mellow when driving around but as soon as you punch the throttle it roars. Most people here like the ATLP or the XLR8 exhausts.

Just to clarify, a J-pipe connects the exhaust gasses from each side of the engine together into one pipe. The cat-back exhaust right after the J-pipe and is the piping and the mufflers to the back of the car. The P2R is a spacer designed to help reduce heat soak into the throttle body so it'll be efficient for a longer period of time. It's not very noticeable on the butt dyno however it does add a nice touch to the engine bay.

Get the ud pully and the J pipe. Doesn't it feel weird being so low to the ground and all the other cars are taller now ? HAHAHA!
