Exhaust system for under $500??

I'm looking to tweak my exhaust system mostly to get a throatier, sportier sound.
I'm not too concerned about the HP increases, for that I'll probably get a CAI and new pulleys eventually.

Mainly, I want my car to sound badass and not ricer cheap.
I did a mid-muffler delete and it sounds better, but I'm not into the cheap sound of the other "Stage mods".

Does anyone know what I could do for under $500-800 in terms of buying my own pipes and effectively getting a custom exhaust?

I'm thinking a cat-back system with a new resonator and muffler before splitting at the rear axle.
The ATLP and XLR8 systems are nice, but I don't have that kind of dough...

I'm not a motorhead and I'm not really interested in messing with the headers (theyre probably rusted as shit since the TL's been in New England for 9 years).

All input is appreciated.
Thanks.

good, cuz we dont have headers.

if an aftermarket exhaust system is too much coin; you could save up or do a custom muffler set up.

most people replace the factory mufflers with magnaflow mufflers.
the factory ones are muffled, and we all know that magnaflow mufflers like to be throaty.

Jpipe plus PCDs and leave the stock cat backs.

^that wont leave a desired sound.
he wants a deep tone....

the PCDs and jpipe combo with stock exhaust leaves a high pitched Rasp.
it does gain the most power, but SOUND is what the OP is after.

I gotta admit, when I first put on the PCD's, it left me with a ricer tone that i grew accustomed to.

His best bet is just to change out the mufflers.

Changing the mufflers to Magnaflows is probably what I'll do.
What about the stock resonator?
Leave that, swap it or delete it?

the resonator = silencer.

if you're not happy with the way the magnaflows sound, then replace the resonator with a straight pipe.

Word
This is pretty much the exact sound I'm looking for:
(1:06)

However, this is a Type-S (not sure what's different about the exhaust).

Also, as far as not caring about performance goes, I would love to get a HP increase but not sacrificing sound.
I just want a more free-flowing, throaty sound. Eventually I'll get an intake for her, but I want to start with mufflers.
Justnspace, I think you know exactly what I'm talking about

PCD-->Jpipe-->stock exhaust is what i have.

IMO, still can't beat the Tsudo for the price; it was $400 when I bought it a year or so ago. Had it on the car for a good while now and I have no complaints. Here's a sound clip or two.

You mention you're not concerned with hp increase, but the exhaust is where most of the untapped power lies, mostly between the heads and catback. A CAI and crank pulley (the only pulley available) will give you very minimal gains; maybe 5 whp from the CAI and a couple from the pulley.

Anx, youre probably right about that actually the pulleys would be a very late addition
I am interested in doing performance mods to the exhaust for sure, But as justnspace said his jpipe and pcds left a rasp which I don't want.

I think what I want to do is replace the stock cat with a hi flow cat, get new mufflers and get an intake. I may even switch the stock pipes out with 2.5-2.75"

This is all from moderate research, not experience, so I'm not sure how much this would cost nor do I know how much power I'd gain.

Again- looking for power but not at the expense of sound. Mainly want a louder throaty roar.

then get hfpc-jpipe-resonated exhaust or just get the exhaust

if you are a 6mt dont waste on the pulley get light weight flywheel instead

Thanks for all the input guys
I've been doing some thread searching, and at the risk of being a flip-flopper, I'm thinking of getting a J-pipe eventually.

My plan is to start by replacing the mufflers, grab a Labree or RV6 V3 jpipe, and add a CAI last (AEMv2?)

Since I plan on doing this in stages, it shouldnt break the bank immediately, but the grand total might be somewhere around $700...

Has anyone replaced the mufflers with one muffler before the Y split and used custom piping to each port?

edit: I am 100% flip-flopping.

1. RV6 V3 J-pipe w/ HFPCs (cant be having that smell).
2. Dynomax resonator (if necessary)
3. Magnaflow / HKS mufflers
4. CAI

Hey Justn i'm just curious if the rasp you're getting would be there for daily driving, say under 3k rpms? I'm planning on getting the same mods for my tl-s and a little rasp doesn't scare me when the engine is at WOT, but if its there every stoplight i might have to think twice
