Does stock exhaust work fine as well?

I was thinking about upgrading my exhaust on a 04 TL manual transmission. But, I don't want it to be ricer. I don't want to get a headache everytime I drive, I still want it to be quiet, but get the performance. I was thinking about upgrading my j-pipe & getting a hi-flow cat. Any thoughts of suggestions?

Yea a j-pipe and high flow cat will give u an increase in perfrmance and at the same time not change ur exhaust note much. Its a very nice upgrade and you will still have that quiet tone.

With a j-pipe and a HFC you might get a more aggressive sounding tone. Not that much though. Pair that with an CAI and you are really ready to go...

I am interested in this as well. Where can I find a good brand jpipe and high flow cat? Which brands give the best performance? And how much is the cost for parts and installation? Thanks guy.

I have pro cats, mid muffler delete and dynomax resonator with the balance being the stock exhaust and it sounds great, not to loud barely any rasp at all.

If you don't want to change your exhaust note but you want performance our j-pipe and high flow cat are a good option. If you want to change the exhaust too I'd recommend the Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust, since it is guaranteed under 93 db.

Here's the links to the j-pipe and cat:

If I get a jpipe upgrade and hi-flow cat, do I need to replace my stock exhaust also? I would like to keep my base tl exhaust. And would the sound be too loud or just a subtle change? I don't want it to be ricey, I just want some type of performance gain. I will be adding an aem v2 cai also. Thanks guys.

From what i have read, those parts will work with your stock exhaust. Also, based on what i have read the sound increase should be minimal contingent upon using the stock exhaust. Apparently, it really gets loud when you take the pre cats out.

If you're looking for just sound cut out your mid muffler. If you want performance get the j-pipe.

You do not need to replace the stock exhaust.

How do you guys feel about the type-s exhaust? Would it be a good idea to get one for my 05 TL?

You can do this, but it will not fit the 05 rear bumper.. the exhaust is wider then the openings .. you can get a type s rear lip and retrofit it to your 05 bumper.. then get the type s exhaust..

I am actually in the process of doing this now.. but automatically going to stage 3 exhaust..

Yeah, I was seriously considering whether I should do this. I heard a type-s turn on and I love the sound of the exhaust. I just don't know how hard is the process to get the type s rear and I don't know if I take it to shop they'll be able to do such a thing. What do you guys think?

I found this old thread that has a DIY of putting the Type-s exhaust on a base TL! I would also like to do this if I ever have the money for the a-spec kit! Check it out....

Thank you for the link
and thank you bzyrice for the advice. My question now is, should I buy the muffler and the pipe or just the muffler? what is it exactly that makes the type-s sound the way it does?

I'm running a S/C with the stock cat-back and managed to put down 347whp. Cruising around town, you'd never know anything has been done to it. Once you get on it though, it gets relatively throaty. I'll run this until I can get an ATLP quad cat-back. To me, it's the least fart-canny sounding setup.

I've seen the stage 1-4 exhaust write up but I don't know about heading in that direction. I want to know if the type-s exhaust performs better with air flow better than the regular exhaust and if the tone of my car would change without the stage 1-4 modifications?
