Diy CAI

Just finished a DIY CAI. I would have taken pictures but I let my friend borrow my camera and didn't remember until I was already underway. I have included diagrams though. The image was originally provided by another member on this board.

Fairly easy but very time consuming.

1. Remove fender liner and joined pieces
2. Remove the 3 bolts holding the Resonator box in. The one bolt closest to the front of the bumper is a PITA to get to. It took forever!
3. You will need to drill 2 rivets on the resonator that hold the tube that #1 is attached to.
4. #1 will pull right off of the tube as it is just a pressure fit.
5. Deliver the baby! (remove the resonator box from the fender)
5. You will need to cut #2 off of the resonator box. There is a line going around it to act as a guide. It does not just come out, cutting is a must.
6. Once you have removed #2 from the box attach #1 to it. They should fit together nice and tight.
7. Wrap some electrical tape around the 2 pieces just to make sure they don't come apart.
8. Cut a little bit of the plastic out on the lower duct (where the grill work is) in the front bumper so that it is practically even for direct air flow to the intake.
9. Drill a hole in the end of #1 and zip tie it in place for support.
10. Reassemble, clean up, and test drive!
11. Enjoy
12. ????
13. Profit

No loud really noticable noise. I thought it would really growl when it hit vtec but it's still very mild and quiet. Seems like power delivery is much smoother as is idle or so it seems. Might just be my mind playing tricks on me. Also, it seems to be a bit torquier upon dead stop acceleration. Just an added note I do have a K&N panel filter in place.

Cool instructions.Idid the exact same thing but without the lower part(blue arrow) in the bottom pic. I'm still gonna get the AEM cold air.

Are you concerned with water ingestion? The K&N is probably a good choice and will act as a water "separator". I know it would only occur under less than ideal situations but it was always a concern of mine (along with noise)when dealing with CAI's.

Thanks for sharing

Yeah there is already an air duct that directs air towards the intake. I just cut it down a little to direct a more even air flow. With the other piece used as an extension it gets it closer to the air duct to be more like an ice box.

No! With an AEM or Injen I might be. However this sits higher up in the fender than a true cold air intake system. I know it sits up higher than previous intakes I have used like on my hatch or wrx. This is more like a Mugen or Comptech Ice Box. There is really no noticeable noise like with an AEM, Injen, or Iceman.

I will try to get it dyno'd soon. I will not have a baseline though so my numbers will be based completely on this mod. So if anyone has a baseline dyno sheet this would be nice to see the difference if any that the intake might make.

how does it sound with the resonator out? I want my car to be a little louder at WOT, but I like how it sounds at cruise, so I am reluctant to add a true CAI. So I have been thinking about simply removing the resonator.

It is quiet and barely noticable. I had taken the resonator out of my cx hatch and it was extremely loud. When I did this I didn't know what to expect as far as sound goes. However, it was a good mod and power seems on spot more so than before. That could just be mind games though. DO it for yourself and report back to us.

yeah, I'm all about free power, so maybe after it warms up this spring. The reason I asked if it was loud, was cause I rode it my buddy's RSX Type S with a short-ram and it was quiet at cruise but it *roared* in VTEC. If you're saying the difference is barely noticeable, then I wonder why Honda bothered to put a resonator in to start with?

Check out Inaccurate's TL Diet thread. He's removed pretty much everything that is removable and weighed every part he took off. I'm am certain he has removed the stock intake.

I've done it. It's around 2 pounds or so. Insignificant indeed.:gheywave:

When it' done, it looks like this:

You can refer to this thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-performance-parts-modifications-112/some-photos-air-intake-resonator-chamber-848863/

In order to perform this modification, you need:
1. A head gun to heat up Pipe#1, which is too tight to fit Pipe#2;
2. A rivet gun with blind rivets (or equivalent) in order to make Pipe#1 mounted on Pipe#2 tight;
3. Cable zip ties to support Pipe#1;
4. Other conventions tools we use to remove the bumper.

I have noticed:
1. Slightly better throttle response;
2. Slightly more horsepower in high rpm;
3. Noise level remains unchanged from outside the car (probably because my loud stage 3 exhaust lol), but I hear slightly more engine noise in the cabin, which is noticeable to the level that I can shift by just listening to the noise now. It definitely sounds sexy .

Here is your answer. The ultimate. All stock tubing with a little thermal heat duct metal tape from Homo Depot. Sounds crisp, sporty, and makes sex.

I'd be really worried about something slipping thru on that one. Either with the tape coming off , or thru the gaps where you made connections.

The tape is power housed metal tape that has been sealed beyond recognition. I dipped this intake in water to see if there were any leaks. Not a one found yo. Perfection. I'd be worried about crying about this sweet intake that I built. Or maybe that the microcosm of a dirt pellet occasionally seeping through any intake will not hurt an engine at all.
