Also hoping jmbnova logs back into his account so the DIY pictures can be seen again. Would love to do this install via a helpful guide vs. Comptech instructions.

I've wanted a comptech short shifter for a while now. Some people complain about notchiness and with the pos 3rd gear synchro, I'm just really hesitant. IMO Acura would try to blame the SS if I did go to them about issues with 3rd.
This and the UR Pulley are the last couple mods I'd like to pick up. I'm just skirred!

I had a full tranny replacement due to the third gear issue and it was done after my SS had been in the car for a long time. No issues.

I take that back. While at the dealers waiting on the tranny, some fuckers used a pry bar on my door, jacked my rims, and dropped the thing onto car batteries which also grounded the car on the rotors! Asswipes

Tranny was good to go though....

Took about 4 hours for complete dis-assembly because certain parts were a bitch to take out...

Going to put everything back in tomorrow, can't wait to try it out.

Thank you again jmbnova for the excellent DIY guide.

Thank you again jmbnova for the excellent DIY guide.

Just drove around the area, love the feelin' of SS - a must mod for anyone without a doubt.

Thought I'd add a few notes for anyone doing this soon :

- the hex screws on the comptech SS are 3mm.

- metal clip on linkage cable can be pryed straight up just as described in the DIY guide, but you can pry directly from where it looks like there is a washer there. It is actually 1 whole piece together. Used a flat head screw driver.

- and one last note about the hex screws on the SS, make sure you have clearance putting it on. This would be when you already have the loctite on the inside and ready to go. Just have the screws adjusted accordingly and the SS should fall in nicely with minimal pressure added.

Good luck!

Well I didn't need to put a shift in, BUT this post make my trim replacement a snap. I was also able to replace the pesky LED illumination inside the heated seat toggle. THANK YOU !!!

I just installed the short shifter then went to reassemble everything, and discovered I lost the metal clip that secures the linkage to the front of the housing. Have been searching for about an hour, and I'm not sure what to do if I don't find it, since it's a pretty essential piece.

You can get a new one from the dealer...but yeah you probably want to find it because it will take days for a dealer to get one.

I've had a short shifter in my TL for 5 years- longer than this thread existed. Until today I had been very happy with the upgrade. Today my wife pulled from a garage. When she tried to shift in 1st she felt that the shifter was very loose. She managed to get the car back in the garage. When I got home, the shifter was moving freely and felt disconnected. When I took everything apart, I found that the factory shifter broke! The ball on it's end was stuck inside the short shifter. You can see it in photograph below.

I guess that short shifter creates an additional load on the factory shifter. I can't explain it otherwise. My wife isn't that strong handed. So now I need to get a replacement shifter- it comes assembled with that huge plastic housing. I will probably need a new short shifter. The broken part stuck inside is glued with Loctite and I might not be able to remove it.
The car will be out of service for a while, and I'll have to commute on a motorcycle. Of course the forecast is for some cold rain. We are still lucky that it happened on our driveway. Could be stuck who knows where.

Great write up. I actually used this write up to install my iSimple ipod kit as many of the same panels were removed. I am however having one slight problem and need to get back in there. How ever, I am having trouble removing one of the screws that connect the center console to the gear shifter panels. I have removed the two screws in the armrest without a problem and the screw on the passengers side, but the only thing that happens with the other screw on the Drivers side is that it turns, but does not lift up. So you can keep turning it and it won't budge. Any help here in getting that screw out so I can slide the console back?

Thanks

Contrary to the instructions included with the shifter, there is no need to remove left and right tunnel covers. They can be pushed outwards just enough to free the center console.

are there any additional parts needed ?

hello all.
This is indeed a nice write up and I have ordered the CT SS for my ride as well.. a quick quesiton though, are there any additional parts needed , such as a heavy shift knob (is this a must or can i just use my current shift knob). are there any adjustment needed for the clutch? once the ss is installed and all panels are assembled, does the stick shift same height or lower? does the leather fabric need any modifications?

thanks in advance for answering these questions.. as i am anxiously waiting for the part to arrive so that i can put it in...

You don't need anything else. Shifter height stays the same.

I can't believe I've been sleeping on this mod this whole time. I think I may do the corsport aluminum bushings and the ss at the same time. Then a countersunk shift knob!

anyone ever see THIS type of short shifter? The year TL matches up, didn't know if this was better or worse than the regular comptech short shifter...

GT1,
Are you sure you put loctite on the base portion and the ball and shoved it ALL the way in. From what I see in the pics, even if you had snapped the OEM ball off at that point, if it were pushed all the way down AND had loctite and the 2 bolts tightened on the sides there is no way it would have just fallen off like that.

I think you may not have pushed it all the way down. I had to push HARD to get mine to sink all the way in.

Don't! I yanked mine for these and never looked back. The Hybrid Racing parts we tested worked amazingly.

GT1 you look like your shifter adapter was not pushed down all the way. If you are positive it was I'd say this was very odd indeed. Never seen it happen in 5+ years.

^^^I agree totally, it's COULDN'T have been totally pushed in or it wouldn't have been able to break there.
Anyway, just resaw this thread, thanks for the info...good to know about the hybrid bushings etc...I may consider those AND the clutch cable too...
