Why bother? Cutting out/welding in straight pipe doesn't gain much, sets you back a few hundred, and puts you at risk of failing an exhaust inspection (depending on state). Then spend more money fixing it. Why not just buy a nice exhaust that gets you the sound, the looks, and more performance?

It sounds very good in the car. I had a 2006 TL 6MT with a carback and Flowmasters and this sounds better.
I cutout the mid-muffler and resonator and welded in straight pipe. I don't care much about performance as I am not interested in spending 1k for a cat back. I just wanted better sound, and that's what I got. Not annoying at all sounds deep and throaty. Slight rasp at 2450rpm to 2550 rpm, no big deal. I spent $100.
Rockyfeller-----I have no idea what you mean when you say "stage 2 or 3" exhaust? On my Dodge I have headers straight pipe flow masters and true duals. What stage would that be considered?

If you cut the mid muffler and the resonator will it pass inspection in Texas?

Mufflers have nothing to do with our state inspections and cops seem pretty tolerant of noise levels. I'd remove the mid-muffler and change the resonator to an aftermarket version to get some more tone without making your car excessively loud or ending up with drone.

I've removed my mid-muffler and have an XLR8 j-pipe and my car is still pretty quiet. If I do anything else, it might be a cat back using Walker Quiet Flow mufflers and turn-downs like the factory mufflers on an 03-05 7th gen Accord. WQF mufflers flow a lot better than OEM mufflers but aren't much louder.
A moderately loud car was fun when I had a Chevelle, but now that I drive 30k miles a year, quiet is where its at.
