California Emissions

Anyone living here in Cali knows we have some pretty strict emission standards. With that understanding, has anyone living in Cali had any problems passing emissions with aftermarket j-pipe, race pipe and cat back exhaust. I'm considering all of the above from ATLP. Thanks!

The only thing you can't pass smog with is the race pipe/3rd cat delete.

I had a friend test mine with no 3rd cat before I actually deastroyed mine. It passed without the 3rd cat so I went ahead and gutted it. From what I've been told, the 3rd cat is there mostly to aid in cold/warm up emissions, whatever gets past the pre-cats. If what I was told is correct, it's not very important once the vehicle is up to temp.

Of course, just the opposite would make more sense. The pre-cats 2" off of the heads would seem like they're more important to the cold start emissions since they get the majority of the heat.

Regardless, it wil pass tailpipe emissions with no 3rd cat but you will get slammed on the visual for not having it. They can even fine you badly if they choose to. That's why I gutted my stock cat so it looks stock.

J-pipe technically is not legal in CA because it's before the 3rd cat. It won't hurt emissions and chances are no one is going to notice it. I wouldn't take it up to the smog shop the same day you install it while it's nice and shiny and new though. If I had the money, I would have no worries doing a j-pipe on my car.

Precat deletes, you have no chance in hell of passing CA emissions lol.

Catback is perfectly fine. However, it's illegal to have straight through mufflers regarless of noise level. Law enforcement will sometimes stick a wooden stick through them to see if they're straight through. You're fine if they're not right at the end of the exhaust system. I've never seen the law but I've been with some friends several times when it has been done.

Thanks everyone for your responses and insights. This has just made my decision that much easier. I'll just stick with the J-pipe and cat back. However, any idea as to what performance gains I might get with the following setup?: CAI, j-pipe, cat back.

Skip the CAI, you should be able to get the sound you want from the exhaust. Use the CAI cash on exterior upgrades.

wouldn't the CAI offer some additional horsepower, or is it so minimal that it's not even worth it?
