Stock crank will do but other than that, expect to fully build your motor (I'm sure gerzand can guide you with part numbers for rods, pistons, etc.). You're also gonna want to have someone who is reputable and has extensive knowledge in this area to do the labor. Tbh you're looking at somewhere between a $5k-$10k investment for a sleeved, fully built J35. A buddy of mine was in a similar position as you; he had a sleeved J35 assembled with pistons, rods etc, for an '08 auto chassis. Reputable and experienced shop did the work. He was only at a stage two kit I believe w/ E85 and 12psi. When the motor was being built, an oversight occurred and it was not epoxied. Car made 480whp and motor lasted a couple of months (this was his second attempt at a built-motor Rotrex setup). Was out driving one day, he went to downshift, and bye-bye sleeve; it had cracked. Car ate all the coolant in one big gulp. Was able to salvage the internals but still a very costly mistake. Dont take shortcuts building your motor. It will come back to bite you. This was only at 12 psi.

How hard/often does your friend drive his TL? Seems 450whp is on the low side for a built engine + Rotrex.

Slip of the ole noggin. His motor was not sleeved, however it was midly built with pistons, rods, springs, retainers... And he was on 93, not E85 but still at 12 lbs.... The auto trans eats torque.

When I’m ready to build my motor it will be done right.

What say you about the strength of a stock 07’-08’ 5 Auto transmission vs. a 6 manual of the same years?

The 2007-2008 5-Speed automatic is like a flimsy piece of balsa wood compared to the 6-Speed manual; the latter is in an entirely different realm.

2008 Acura TL - Powertrain - Acura Automobiles - Honda News

This article stats that the 5AT has high-torque capacity, says nothing of the like about the 6Mt.

Rationalize it anyway you want, the 5AT is capable of only taking a fraction of the torque of a 6MT.

Wait, so the engine wasn't sleeved? So the part about not remembering to epoxy it was fabricated?
6MT is king when you're trying to make power. It's not the only way, but it's the better way. I think we can all agree on that.

Replacing the stock sleeves with aftermarket one is never a bad idea if you are putting in pistons and rods. 480WHP is an awful lot on stock sleeves and 93 pump gas.

If you do go with aftermarket sleeves with new pistons, consider increasing the bore diameter for more jam. I went +3mm bore on my B series and made +15WTQ across the entire power band on a sub 2.0L engine.

I have considered changing the bore during the build, but I have more questions about the increased heat between cylinders and factors surrounding reliability(vs. stock bore).
I don’t want to end up like that one member who built his engine with the help of IHATECARS and many other members, only to have it quickly fail. I remember one of the reasons being the piston and bore size, or the quality of the hone.

Are you talking about the piston to wall (P2W)? The heat between cylinders shouldn't be a concern with a good tune and proper cooling system to handle the increase thermal output of your build.

I saw a post form P2Rev, they are doing an NA build J series with 92mm bore sleeves. It's something that you will need to talk to your engine builder about what bore to go with and the availability of those piston sizes for your power goals. I went as far as I could go bore size for boost with room for 2 more +0.5mm over bores in case something happened to the bore.

Bought tickets for my wife and I to go buy winvange’s KBP 6mt cash. We forfeited our tickets from Rome to PDX and bought one way tickets to JFK to pick up the car and drive it 2980 miles back home.

So far all I’ve gotten was pictures at night of only the exterior. Been asking him for days for interior and undercar pics. Keeps telling me he will get them. It’s been like pulling teeth all week.

His post in the marketplace is false advertising. Those pics he has up were taken by the previous owner, hence the North Carolina plates and fancy house in the background. The car is not in pretty rough shape after only 9 months of ownership.

Im doing my best to make it easy for him to sell it to me, but he’s not very serious sounding.

What do you guys think?
Rusty KBP 6MT with 160k miles worth it? We would have to cut our vacation in half and have to drive it cross country through the snow belt in the wintertime..

It all depends upon how much rust and what the price is. The cross country road drip in the winter time is really a non issue (I'm half way through one myself, I got to Colorado yesterday and will be heading back to New Hamster this Friday).

Here's the thing, a single winter in the rust belt will not cause any significant rust to build up, so assuming the car was clean nine months ago, I wouldn't be overly concerned about a single winter.

Sounds like you cut your trip to Rome out a little prematurely.
Never cut a romantic trip with the wife for a car trip...
I mean, I guess it could turn into a cool trip with her.
You better hope that fuckin thing doesn't leave you stranded...

So you write us a novel about him being shady and then just a quick blurb about how the car is awesome and he's nice?
Elaborate, fool!

As I write, we lay in the back of our 2012 MDX infront of a dealership. It’s 7:07am and we are about to get Starbucks. We will then return to said stealership to stand first in line at the door like a new IPhone is about to hit the market.

We are trying to cash buy a 6MT TLS in prestine condition. This car has barely been inspected by them, but we know its the one.

I think we have differing definitions for pristine...
I'm confused as to what your'e doing too...you're at the dealership for PPI?

Curbed wheel...I don't think the mirror surround is supposed to be paint matched which means there's been paint work...
something funny where the sideskirts join, clear looks to be going on trunk lid...the odd white dust/scratch on the inside of the headlight lens (I had
that on my KBP too)...

I think he purposely took night pics and so close...but actually he'd be better served taking daytime shade pics to hide something

Good luck, man...maybe I'm wrong.
Biggest knock on it is that it's in NY.
Shady people and salt...although usually because it's all parallel parking, damage is not door dings...just sideswipes and kissed bumpers.

I get the feeling this car was “the one” more due to price, than anything.

Either way... New York cars seem like a horrendous idea- as J put it- salt. And lots of it. Working on that car will be a fucking nightmare if it has at all been on the roads in the winter.

one thing I’ve noticed... whenever looking at cars, if it’s from out east, it’s always several thousand less than an equivalent car from here. It’s always because of the salt damage.

Unless I failed to read this thread correctly, the car in question has only seen one winter; that wouldn't concern me in the least.

No the KBP 6MT is a member here selling on Marketplace.

I’m at a dealership and just signed on NBP 6MT. Currently waiting for the bank to open to withdraw the cash.
Here are pics

Lived in Sunnyvale Cali all its life, one owner, All maintenance done on time at Acura.
I had to beat another buyer by 30 minutes to buy it. So I drove 3 hours and slept in front of the dealership.

I think you can bring that paint back from the dead...
or worst case, wrap that bitch in vinyl for $1500...

I'm still very confused about what car is what and who is who and what is happening...
but hey, I'm the dumb rockstar so, status quo.

I’m about to close on the black car at a dealership. I also scheduled a plane ticket to jfk halfway through vacation to buy the blue car and bring it back to PDX. Flying into jfk Dec 5 2018 @ 8:30pm. Though if I buy this black car I can fly from Rome to PDX without the hassle of the blue car.

Black car is from a dealership in Washington state, blue car is acurazine member in NYC.

Thanks Zeta! The Rotrex kit is eekin to be installed!

The car was purchased before it was readytobe sold. So it’s still dirty and the dent and scratches have not been repaired. I’m coming back to the Audi dealership to take delivery Wednesday or Friday evening.

Im finally done Saving 4 a TL!

So, how did it feel during your test drive?
Clutch nice and smooth?
No 3rd gear grind?
No perceivable vibrations up front?

You said going in that you and the mrs. 'knew it was the one'. Was that confirmed after the test drive?
Did the Audi stealership show you some BlackFriday 'love', for the 3hr drive, during the negotiation or were they staying 'firm' and being dicks?
The car appears to be a solid candidate for your Gerzey bear project.

Good Luck!

The car drove phenomenally!! The lines are all sharp, the leather is uncracked and supple, the dash is straight.

The suspension is fresh and the shifts flow from one to another like a buttery wave on the ocean. The clutch feels new.

The hood, trunk and doors close crisp and smooth.

Even the factory sticker above the Navi screen still shines proudly!

They are replacing
  • x1 TPMS sensor
  • Hood insulation due to a small rip
  • All four tires(They are allowing me to keep the four used Michelin primacy mxm4s)
  • Two hood struts
  • Removing Dent and scratches
Previous owner is an Indian software engineer. Used the car for utility only, and to drive his kids around.

This Audi dealership has a “no haggle” policy. So they didn’t give us any deals. Was a painless process thanks part to not involving banks.
