Benefit of J-Pipe?
I searched, and coming from a Civic Si, I don't know where the header is in the TL - S? I am looking for a picture of the whole underbody of the TL- type S , so I can learn about the 3 cats (I only had 1), and what there is instead of a header?
I have read the J pipe is a good mod, that is not too obnoxiously loud on the exhaust. What is the benefit and what is it replacing if not a header?
Thanks, New owner 08 TL - type S m/t

There really is no header on a TL. It's cast onto the block.
The jpipe is the pipe that connects to the precats. It's poorly designed from the factory. An aftermarket jpipe net you probably 6-10HP a bit of torque and add just a little growl.
block -> precats -> jpipe -> cat -> catback
Most, if not all, newer jpipe designs delete the third cat.
I recommend RV6.

J pipe still sounds foreign to me cause I'm used to Y pipes on a RWD vehicle. If you think of it as a Y it makes more sense, ties both engine banks together down to a single pipe. Smoother transitions/bends and larger diameter = more power. Obviously not an issue on an inline motor, only V's/boxers.

I have had the RV6 V3 Jpipe on two different occasions on a 07 Type S 6mt, and more recently on an 08 Type S 5at. The RV6 pipe is very high quality and fitment and finish is top notch. I would highly recommend this jpipe for its quality.
Now however........ with that said, in both occasions that I have had the pipe (on the 6mt and 5at Type S), I noticed no seat of the pants improvments. Not that you would really expect to feel that minimal of HP, but the first time I removed the Jpipe going back to stock I swear the car felt better especially at lower RPM range. I told myself I would not spend that much money on a jpipe again. Sure enough I was boired one weekend so I drove to RV6's shop and bought another brand new jpipe this time on a newer 08 automatic Type S. I used that pipe for a few months and eventually decided to remove it because for whatever reasons the car felt like it was lagging big time once the temps went up this summer. So I removed the pipe and puot the stock one back on. Once AGAIN, I swear the car felt and drove so much better. It seemed that I gained a decent amount of HP in the lower ranges. As for up top I didnt notice any improvements there either in the 6mt or the 5at. So now I am for sure not gonna buy another jpipe. IMO it seems like the engine actually likes the OEM jpipe.

The kind fella at RV6 called me back, and he was very informative and kind. I thought I would go with the J pipe and 2 high flow cats combo. The J pipe would delete the third cat. I would think I would surely gain with this setup?
After reading your post, I can stay stock, and just enjoy my M/T type S, but I am curious if anybody has this setup with the J pipe and high flow cats.
I have read about the pre-cat deletes (straight Pipes) , but they are not for me, as I like a refined, low key , ride that is not too loud, but does sound aggresive. Furthermore, after adding the high flow cats and Jpipe, I would have my TL tuned by a tuner with Hondata Flashpro. Surely there would be some gains ? Has anybody run this setup?

He is missing the bigger picture though. And is speaking from a butt dyno on two different cars. Not to dismiss what he is saying but I want to make it clear for everyone else.
If you plan on doing other things, freeing up the exhaust in every way possible helps more then just replacing one piece. They play off of each other.
So say it looks like this (numbers are just an example, not true)
precat deletes: 12HP
jpipe: 8HP
catback: 10HP
but...
precat deletes + jpipe: 26HP
pcd + jpipe + catback: 40HP
Well you get the point.
So sure it's possible to get to 290WHP on the stock jpipe. I would never do all that other work and not do the obvious though. I don't care what peoples butt dynos say. I just need to look at the pipe designs...
And I know what my butt dyno said. And I felt an impact on my mt base all over the power band with the rv6 jpipe. The most coming in the mid rpm range.

i think J-pipes make power only because they get rid of the 3rd cat... if you just got rid of the 3rd cat with stock J-pipe then youll get those same 8whp...

After hearing this is seems the gains can come from deleting the cats or replacing all of the them with high flow cats.

^he doesnt know, we all dont know.
I see your thinking; you want an exact number.. to help you justify buying the pipe.
if you want to find out how much it gains, you're going to have to get a pre and post dynos to compare what you gained or lost.
you can always sell the pipe, if you dont like it. JTS9 has sold 2 or 3 j-pipes.

I bet the fact you are removing the third cat equates to half of the gains of a jpipe. Maybe a tad less. If I had to guess.

Just a recommendation if you are planning on doing the hfc and the jpipe I would do them at the same time so you are not repeating steps in the install process. The PREcats are not as you would say "fun" to do. Once you remove your jpipe your bottom bolts are loose on the precats so you might as well replace them while your in there.

That is sound advice. But also a $1000 at once which some can't or don't like doing.
IMO getting the jpipe off the precats was fairly easy.

J pipe install is a cakewalk, came off the precats like nothing, I wound up cutting the bolts going to the catback though cause they were so rusted. Richie's kit came with new bolts so no biggie. I would say I did notice a difference at low RPMs, driving around right after the install I barely got on it and I chirped the tires a little, didn't do that before. After a few days it's wasn't as noticeable, ECM adjusted itself. Not a big power mod but worth doing and looks as blingy as a Honda crossover pipe can.

Pull your negative terminal once and while and reset the maps on your ECM, I agree, the jpipe install wasn't bad, I did mine seperately also, just a suggestion. A lot of power mods are like that, sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of low end power for more power at higher rpms. It's a higher flowing exhaust component leaving less back pressure, common sense. When your racing, how often are you at low RPMS, your not much. Mods depend on how your engine/mods are set up. I have PCDS and Jpipe, the PCDS take the exhaust note to a whole different level. If you want to stay classy and somewhat quiet I do not recommend PCDS. HFC and JPIPE would be nice mods, get a good resonator!

if i had to "guess" based on a TL type S already doin this i'd say you gain all of it if not more lol... but i guess its personal preference on whatever makes you happy at the end of the day, some prefer that shiny look, some just want to be mentally satisfied that changing it makes a difference and some actually wants to know the actual difference... up to you... as long as it removes the 3rd cat then its fine IMO... either way you will see that weak 8whp lol.. all on if you want to change it all or just the cat... 8-10whp whichever way... goodluck with your purchase

I think Aaron, Dave, and I all argued with you, Grand_hustle17, on facebook about this. I'm sure that was you.
So with your logic all the proven dynos of the v1 jpipes (keeping 3rd cat) were erroneous. Lol

Mmmmm, outperforming is a BIG word... without trying out all the vendor's pipe on the dyno. This design is long, which will give you low RPM power.

I know which one look superior but if power was based on what look superior then i should definately go get a superior looking 3" catback all the way back to muffler maybe the superior look will net me power lol...

Well like I said I don't like comparing weiner sizes, a few people have had this jpipe before and it has been compared. I believe my jpipe was ordered from labree, youd have to research it
This is how I aquired it through black market

I think the first mod should be to put a test pipe in place of the 3rd cat. It isn't monitored so no worries about a CEL. Might not pass a visual inspection in states that do one but here in Texas if there are no codes, you pass.
With even the newest of our cars being 6 years old now and most people having well over 50k miles, odds are the main cat (and precats as well) are not flowing as well as when new so a test pipe will probably yield at least some power for a reasonable price.
I've heard such mixed results on the J-pipe both here and on v6performance I'm just not sure about spending nearly $500 for on one when I can get a test pipe (and probably at least half the gains) for $50 instead.
