The pops are more than likely raw fuel igniting inside the exhaust system. Usually happens when you remove the CAT converters. Usually during deceleration it will do it for a few seconds then the cars computer shuts fuel off then its stops. If you ask around I bet the people with cats the problem is less noticeable.

I used to have an Pick Up back in the days that I can make back fire by Turning off ignition and then give the throttle a blip or two (carbonated) Then when you would turn the key back on it would sound like a GUN or a shot Gun going off. If you did it fast enough it would sound like a drive BY. And depending how much raw Fuel went into the exhaust would sound like a small or larger caliber gun. THe down side of this is it would BLOW the shit out of the mufflers. But it was Hella fun even got pulled over a few times at gun point by what seemed like half of the City's P.D. but of course they never found no weapon so we would be let go...
