Any ideas for first performance upgrade?

I recently got a 2007 TL (base) and am looking to install my first upgrade. I am looking to spend less than $1000, any ideas?

About to buy an 04 6MT TL myself, and from what I've read, best bang for the buck is a JPipe. from 2.2-4k RPM it gave a 25-40 wtq increase when paired with an exhaust! So if you keep your stock exhaust, should give 15-28~ wtq increase. They go from $300-400.

Get the RV6 V3 Jpipe & HFPC combo. It's 975.00 on Richie's site. Money well spent.

what part of performance are you looking for? so far you have the increased HP mods...j-pipe is best bang for buck, and PCDs.

handlingwise= rear sway bar and suspension (with the suspension you get a subtle to mild looks mod as well)...if you like cornering...then holy cow! i have aspec suspension and the progress RSB= grin from ear to ear when cornering or going around clover leafs

so are you looking for power? or handling? a little of both?

The amount on these threads recently is mind-boggling. I mean I thought the days of old on hondatech was bad.

Power wise j-pipe.... But I'm more of a suspension guy myself. Totally different car on a good suspension.

That's cute. I'm glad you have so much time on your hands. Although I'd say in my defense, the car was 3.5 years younger then, type-s (half the questions) was def much younger in '08, and those were a lot more specific questions then "what's a good first power mod"...

But alas, you're right. That's why I answered after I bitched.

AEM V2 and J-pipe. Pretty good bang for your buck. You can find them for sale used. I would say your're good for 20whp with that combo.

I'm looking into this question already but I thought I would run it by you guys since I am new on here

-- I also recently bought a 2008 Acura TL Type S and was looking for some first modifications. I have read every possible thread looking for the good and bad mods. Here's my question
Q: Will adding a AEM Cold air intake system and possibly cat back exhaust hurt my computer/ecu system, or am I in the clear for some fairly easy bolt on mods a girl can accomplish If so I am willing to look into better performance chips! I do not want black exhaust tips from unburnt fuel!
Thanks!

Congrats on your purchase

An AEM cold air intake won't give you much more power for the money you spend on it. It shouldn't harm your car if you use it properly and don't drive through deep water. With a cold air intake, if you drive through deep water it will suck up water into the engine and damage it. Otherwise it's not going to damage your ECU or anything else

An exhaust is a great mod that doesn't really harm anything! An Cat-back exhaust + the J-Pipe is a great combo for most folks that gives a good amount of power without breaking the bank too much.

As far as black tips from unburnt fuel, you won't get much of that unless you turbo or supercharge the TL and don't tune it properly. Otherwise you'll be fine! However the tips are supposed to be black on the inside (painted from the factory) and chrome on the outside edge! If it's dull or dark, use some Eagle One Never Dull Cotton Wadding to clean them up!

Hey guys I've had my 2008 TL for about 6 months now and I wanted to start doing some performance mods. I'm seriously considering picking up the Progress sway bars but I just have 2 concerns. 1, are the bars safe to drop into an otherwise stock TL, and 2, how difficult is the installation? I'm a little worried about doing anything like taking a tire off, but I guess I'm willing to try. I tried to search but couldn't really find an installation guide or video.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin, I'm Justin.

the RSB is quite simple. the only hard part is wiggling in/out of the bars.

Whats the difference in the ATLP Quad and the XLR8 J-Pipe exhaust setups or is there any? Suggestions? I have no money limit on this ha!

I know everybody said j-pipe is the best mod. but if you look on your stock j-pipe It's the same style and pretty much the same size. I just would like to know how many Hp we can gain with just a J-pipe with the 3rd cat already remove.

its the same style, because it can only fit one way, idiota.

you can see the merge on the stock jpipe. it probably goes from 2.25 to 1inch.

the aftermarket jpipe's merge retains the full 2.50 diameter all the way through.

Justin, The rear sway bar by itself makes a HUGE difference on the car so if you want to save some money you really don't need to do the front one. As well I think installing the front sway bar requires a bit more effort than simply wiggling out the bar.

The rear one isn't too bad to install and is pretty easy to get out. There should be a DIY in the 3G Garage for the Comptech Sway Bar, it's the same with any other for the rears.

The ATLP and the XLR8 are fairly close to each other in terms of design (depending on which version of each you go with). I believe the XLR8 gives more power in the mid RPM range over the ATLP but there also is the RV6 V3 J-pipe which eliminates the 3rd Catalyst. It will give a bit more power at higher RPM's but you will loose a little power at low RPM's (like leaving a red-light)

You can add the J-pipe (RV-6, ATLP or XLR8) even though you've removed the third cat. The J-pipes add a bunch of power because they are freer flowing, the RV-6 one is the only one that eliminates the stock catalysts.

A lot of great info here! I wish I had the money to spend on everything I want to do all at once. But I heard seeing the transformation in stages is way better.

I don't know. Because of the install, smell, sound changes I would put the PCD after the jpipe. The jpipe is just one of those super easy not much else changes other then power mods that people will probably enjoy more as their first mod.

I've always been a suspension first kinda guy though...

the jpipe was my first mod, ever to the TL.
its a safe and relatively easy mod to do.

PCD's come with side effects and if you're fresh to modding, you might not want these intended side effects.

I'm doing my suspension in the fall!!!!!

I was telling my old buddy about my brakes that are coming and how upgraded sways and maybe type-s top hat bushings are my last suspension mods. And that the track will be pretty fun at that point.

He went on to argue all kinds of things and I finally just had to say..

"Listen dude, if the suspension guru IHC says so, I'm going to listen to him"...

"Wtf is IHC?"...

"GOD."

^

i feel you.
IHC does make sense, and I wish more ppl took his advice or just plain read what he has to say.

I wanted to go with H&R sport springs, but H&R does not disclose their spring rates. which too me was a deal breaker.
most aftermarket springs induce understeer, which would cancel out my Progress RSB!

Quick Reply: Any ideas for first performance upgrade?
