Another Magnaflow TL

since minkle81 & edluv143 had sucess with their custom magnaflow mufflers and piping i've opted go with a custom made exhaust system myself.

i also missed the opportunity to get a ATLP Quad exhaust for my 08' TL-S

tomorrow the TL is going in for a custom exhaust system. there's a shop (stan's headers & exhaust) outside my local area that does custom made headers & exhaust systems for all types of vehicles including hondas AND they have several mandrel bending machinery to do this!

below are the two magnaflow mufflers (part # 12158) that will be going on my TL. member minkl81 had magnaflow mufflers part # 12148 which was a 2.25" inlet & 2.25" outlet. i'm going with a 2.5" inlet & 2.5" outlet and 4" diameter & 7" length stainless steel magnaflow round angle cut tips (part # 35121).

i've prepped the mufflers by using a fine grit sand paper. i sanded it down until the mufflers had a shiney look and then spray painted it flat black. the original was stainless steel satin but in a dull finish.

i'm going with a 2.5" diameter piping from the cat.

i know this is gonna be a loud system but i will see after the initial install
if i will need to add a resonator to quiet the system down a little bit.

any suggestions??? or wish me luck???

i already have the Richie R-V6 pre-cat deletes, j-pipe, & test pipe,
UR underdrive pulley, & AEM CAI w/ dry filter installed.

coming from Excelerate within the next few days is the P2R throttle spacer w/ gaskets, P2R thermal manifold gasket, & Buddy Club radiator cap. also, coming from another source is the Buddy Club Racing Spec condenser ground system.

i will do some video clips and a photo shoot if it doesn't rain again here in washington state. btw, there is a shop down the road that has a dynojet and i know the owner from my highschool days....... mmm.....

get in touch with that shop that has the dynojet and get back to me drew ask if they'll be 3-5 runs for 50 bucks...pending 10 cars. for the same price, if they'd opt to do 5 cars, that'd be great...since we have 5 cars in for sure.

I think Minkl meant that since you have deleted your cats and have no resonator, that it is going to be loud. I'm sure it'll sound damn good but may be a tad raspy. With an AR25 resonator though, I think it may sound puuurfect. Get us a vid! And if you do decide to resonate it, perhaps a before/after?

Looking forward to hearing and seeing this.

I am almost certain that I am going to be going with a custom system since atlp has stopping making the quads and XLR8 (which I really like ) the tips are just to tame for me..

fyi... do 2.5" after the cat then a 2.5 to dual 2.25" y pipe then do the muffelrs 2.25"... if you do 2.5" dual exit you will lose all chances of having a low end and might actually drop at top end

sounds much better than 2.5" all the way
with 2.5" all the way, no resonator, and 4" quad tips will be pretty loud. also revs will build up much faster, but you'll feel torqueless.

well.. shop can build a cup and reduce the outlet to 2.25" rather than 2.5"

okay here's the results...

sound -

the sound is clean and deep! upon start up the car rumbles to life with a deep authoriative exhaust note. at idle the car rumbles nicely... a nice noticeable exhaust note. at a quick jump it's complete exhaust note but the intake takes over. no rasp so far... but i need to have someone drive my car while i stand on the side and listen.

performance -

it's crazy off the line! the TL pulls HARD on the top end! the TL revs quicker than before. i looked at the tach and the needle just jumps like it never did before! it's like the TL was waiting for this to happen. there's a very nice kick to it too! the car feels faster and smoother according to my butt dyno. it actually pulls harder than before and keeps pulling. when i did a quick run down the street the TL wanted to keep pulling. of course i had to shut it down since what i was doing wasn't a good idea on public streets... but hey...

well in the end... the car is loud as sh*t. i needed to add two resonators (2.5' diameters) to tone the loudness down. even with the resonators the car is still loud. it drones at approx. 2000 rpms especially from a stop up to 2000 rpms.

also, when i added the resonators it toned the exhaust down a bit but it did ALSO did smooth the tone out nicely. i'm not completely satisfied with the drone and loudness but as for performance & sound... it's actually very nice! i'm impressed. i think by going with the resonators i gained some low end torque back.... doesn't feel like there was a loss down low or even high....

when i was coming home there was a painter painting my neighbors house next door and out of the blue he said my car sounded nice.......

now... i do have options... leave as is and wait for an opportunity to get a hold of a ATLP quad exhaust??? i see these subie drivers with their loud exhaust systems and it makes me think i'm now one of them but i drive a FWD acura...

i can live with the loudness but i was not expecting it to be this loud.

any of you guys results with a bolt-on aftermarket exhaust system experience drone and loudness with your systems?

i need to wash the car up and i will take better pics along with some sound & video clips. also, the driver side muffler needs to be adjusted a little bit. it's pointing down.

bill from honest-1 said if we get 6 cars he'd charge us $60 each with three runs. everything included... i.e. air fuel ratio, and other good stuff.......

got two resonators installed. it actually toned the sound down a bit and smoothed it out too! sounds a lot better with the resonators installed! still got the loudness and droned tho.

i shoulda waited for advice but it's all done... the performance results are positive but the loudness and droned at approx. 2000rpms is disappointing.

the fuzz in my area is pretty much relax now-a-days... i'm rolling around with no front plates and have yet to be hussled by the fuzz...

I know for me, it was half the price and the same quality and same size piping. Really no difference for half the price. Not to mention that I didn't have to wait months for the exhaust to become available.

told you it'll be loud.
try reducing the inner diameter of exhaust outlet to 2.25" or even 2"
it'll tone down alot of 2k rpm drone without sacrificing much performance.

this is what i did to reduce the inner diameter

I have the ATLP quads, J-pipe and HFC (used to have the race pipe) and it definitely drones. Mainly in the 2k-2.8k range. Cruising the highway in 6th can be brutal sometimes but I have gotten used to it to a point. I've gotten a lot more conscious about throttle position because of it.

I've been back and forth on whether I want to try a resonator, still undecided. I believe it was Replayman who added 2 resonators to his ATLP and said it didn't do much for the drone so I may just leave it. I find myself driving with the radio off a lot just to listen to it so it can't be that bad

Get some clips posted Drew, with drive-bys if possible, including just normal driving (not WOT). Interested in hearing this setup.

I have the mid muffler delete and a dynomax resonator installed on my TL. If I add the Magnaflow mufflers, will it enhance the sound of my exhaust or ruin it?
