Question 6mt tranny fluid upgrade? AmsOil???

Hi,

Just wondering if any 3g tl owners are using AmsOil synchromesh. Mtf? Also any idea why it's not recommended for limited slip applications.?

on the bottle it says "Not for LSD's"
probably because the content of the fluid isnt compatible with LSD's.

I think a very few has tried it. like less than 1%.

go ahead and try it! lol
the warning on the bottle would steer me away.

There is two different types of LSD: clutch-based (KAAZ) and gear-based (Helical-Torsen). We have Torsen.
The Amsoil Synchromesh sticker warning is ambiguous, just LSD, but intended for clutch-based LSD's not for Torsen.
Gear based limited slips differentials have no other requirements than specified viscosity.
I'm using this fluid for 2 years, is an excellent product. You feel the difference switching from OEM fluid. No more 2nd grinds and 3rd pops.

Glad for clarify

I got fresh new bottles for my next service. The label literally states:

"Not for use in engines, wet-clutch applications, hypoid rear axles, or limited-slip applications."

Also:
"Replace Honda Genuine MTF fluid for manual transaxles and Shell or Texaco MTX fluid."

I have read somewhere, that some Synchromesh additives are not suitable for clutch-based LSD like Kaaz witch is a "wet-clutch application"

Another great fact I just found at 8thcivic.com (we share the same Torsen LSD on K20Z3 transmissions):
11-06-2010
Recently, I searched whether the AMSOIL synchromesh is compatible with our 06+ Civic Si transmission and LSD because I see the "Not for wet clutch or LSD appliation" on the label at the back of the bottle.

That really got me contemplating because there's a helical LSD in our transmission!!! Forums showed a mix of comments in regard to the oil compatibility. So I emailed AMSOIL to find out the answer.
Here is his response to your question:

Maki, Aaron (amaki@amsoil.com)

We have confirmed that AMSOIL MTF is suitable for use in newer Honda manual transmissions calling for Honda Manual Transmission fluid, Part no. 08798-9031. This recommendation was pulled due to potential incompatibility with the LSD in the Civic Si 2.0, among others. We are confirmed to be compatible with front wheel drive transmission/transaxle common sump systems. In the future, we will likely revise our literature to reflect this change.

So this being said the AMSOIL product is 100% compatible to be used in your application.

I to have contacted AmsOil.

This is what they had to say :

Frank,

Thank you for taking the time to contact AMSOIL with your questions and comments.

The AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) is recommended for this model year 3.2TL. There should be no problems using it in the 6 speed manual transmission.

We hope this is helpful.

Hi guys. I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful when using this fluid in cold climates - such as New England. The fluid works great when it is up to temp (shifts just as nicely as the GM fluid). However, I had a lot of issues selecting gears when the transmission was cold and when the outside temperature was near or below freezing. In addition, the shifter would "pop" out of gear occasionally, and gear selection felt like crap until the tranny warmed up.

Maybe the fluid could not provide enough friction for the synchronizers to work properly? In any case, I do not recommend running this fluid if you live in an area that sees temps below freezing.

I see no reason to personally use anything other than GM Synchromesh, since it's worked well for me, but it's good to know there are other options.
