I just checked the ETM and it doesn't go into that much detail. I've got a spare so I will try taking it apart and will let you know how I make out.

Let me know if this could work:

Connect the buttons on the display, check the voltage of each wire to get the POWER wire. Then push on one button and get the voltage of each wire to see which one react to the "Push".... ???

I've got it apart. Just need to map it out.

If you have an ohm meter, you can just use it. But I should be able to get you something soon. Just looking at it, it's just a set of switches with one side tied to a common pin, two are rockers and a 4-way where the joystick is.

Trying to confirm that the rear defog switch is momentary. The D7 and D11 wires from that bundle should show continuity when the switch is pressed and held and no continuity when released.

I'm going to wiring an aux trigger from my Viper remote start to the D7 wire to trigger the rear defog remotely. I assume the trigger needs to be pulsed (momentary) rather than latched.

I'll be pulling the unit later today and can check it then, but I thought I'd ask since you already have one apart. No big deal if you don't have the time.

ok VmtSquad, here is what I see so far. I was wrong about the center stick, it's a joystick and I am thinking it might be resistive. It has 9 pins and is so small, I can't really get any good readings from it. But the switches are:

Looking from the front, I have them numbered left to right

1, 2 ,3up, 4down, 5up,6down, 7,8

Looking at the back, again left to right, pins 1-11

Pin 1 - Switch 6.8
Pin 4 - Switch 5,7
Pin 7 - Switch 1,4
Pin 8 - Switch 1,2,5,6
Pin 9 - Switch 3,4,7,8

Ok, so it'll be hard to tape on the center stick if I understand....

Isnt a way to simply reroute the wiring behind the buttons ??

If not I'll have to get this thing a part and look at it closely with you indications

What is it you'd like to use the joystick for? Actually moving around on the screen? If so, then I can see what I can figure out. But if that is the case, you'll need the 2nd half that converts it to a computer compatible device. Definitely possible.

Could it be possible to link those Pins to the right wire color??

So If I understand what you saying, if I press MAP/GUIDE I need to connect PIN 7 and 8 so that it sends a signal to my USB controller??

Also, which wire is the POWER, there must be a + and - to power the LEDS and be able to send signal with the buttons?? I would have to give the right voltage to those wire so I can use the buttons...right ??

I don't know if you noticed but this is my first time attempting this...I read the Keyboard hack on the net, but my electrical knowledge is limited ....

Have either one of you guys removed the upper vent panel to get to the upper bolts for the Display Panel Control Unit? How did you do it? I'm having a heck of a time and am afraid to pull too hard. I don't have the special tool but made one myself. I can get it hooked inside the vent, but I've pulled pretty hard and got nothing. I'm afraid to pull much harder.

Any tips?

The switches are just that, no power needed. It just completes the circuit. Yes you are correct as with regard to what button to pins are closed.

The bulb pins are 10 and 11.

The colors are:

1 - light blue
2 - brown
3 - red
4 - dark blue
5 - black
6 - grey
7 - yellow
8 - pink
9 - dark green
10 - tan
11 - light green

As for the bulb (LED) Pins 10 & 11, what voltage is needed to make them light?

I may use the little board you showed me, but i'll have to check the compatibility with Mac, since I'm using a MacMini in my car.

Ok so those buttons simply work as regular push buttons, this simply things a little. I simply need to find the right board for my application.

Here's the diagram from a OEM parts place. It's 8V and I think they are just plain incandescent.

How could I provide 2 bulb with 8V-120MA and 2 others with 8V-60MA, maybe I should simply use the Navi-Display to light the LEDs....it's a little overkill I guess

What about button 2 - 3 - 5 - 6 ? & 9 correspond too?? Thout you devided this into 8 buttons...(PINS) :S little confused here!!

I'm not sure how you are referenced the button numbers.

But if you look at the buttons, the first two are just push buttons, the next two are rockers and the last two are again just push buttons.

So there are only 6 switch plates but two rock back and forth adding two switch points.

I haven't forgotten about the joystick. Other things getting in the way (fix a small leak in the house heating, re-cover chairs for wife, etc, etc.) I also just dropped a bunch of coin to do brakes, timing belt and water pump on my Pilot so that's on the list too. The weather up here (as you know) is still pretty mild for this time of year.

I'll let you know as soon as I can get to it.

We had the first snow on the ground last night, didnt even change my tires yet lol. It's now obligatory to have some winter tire in the Quebec province since last year. Will have to put a priority on this, still have till December 15th to install them.

Way I did was, I purchased USB gamepad(Play station style has analog and digital combind model) and soldered it to the factory navi button and use joypad to assign key emulation.

Tricky part is that joystick on the factory button is not left, right, up and down(look a like rotary type of joystick) and pins are so tiny.
I cannot remember exactly but I belived there is 10 or 11 pin soldered to PCb.
So, I gave up to find the pin and used it only for enter or select key for the keyboard emulation.

Please, let me know if you found better way.

The joystick and board are still sitting here unassembled.

I've been burning both ends of the candle with work and I'm also working on getting my garage insulated and heated. The mild weather is gone!!!!

I wanted to know how should I connect for instance one of my buttons?

Since 1 wire goes for couple of bouttons on the Navi Buttons I planed to use a small circuit board to easily connects all switches.

For instance " MAP/Guide = Wire 7-8 ; yellow-pink " how should I connect both yellow and pink on the interface board???


I admit that the interface board isnt really clear for my knowledge and if someone could give me a hand I would appreciate.

I just remapped the navigation buttons for my carpc project and I figured out the wires for up/down/left/right on the stick.

Pin 1 light blue - Switch 6,8,D,L
Pin 2 brown - NONE
Pin 3 red - NONE
Pin 4 dark blue - Switch 5,7,U,L
Pin 5 black - Switch 2,3,R,U
Pin 6 grey - NONE
Pin 7 yellow - Switch 1,4,R,D
Pin 8 pink - Switch 1,2,5,6
Pin 9 dark green - Switch 3,4,7,8


1- MAP/Guide = Wire 7-8 | yellow / pink

I looked at this more closely and I think you'll need two interfaces. If you look at the common pins, they are 8 and 9 across all the non-joystick pins.

With the mini-pac, there is only one common point for all of those switchpoints on the interface.

You need something that allows at least two common points or have two points for each switch being detected. If you tie 8 and 9 together, you cut the number of switches detected in half.

The thing I haven't seen is if you can have two interfaces interacting with their code.

Are you using their code or doing your own?
