Whats the deal with XM

OK Im listening to the comedy channel on XM yesterday and I hear ... yep you guessed it ... commercials?!!!!! I was under the impression that XM was commercial free. I have heard some commercials about other XM radio stations and I guess those arent really commercials because they are telling you about other channels but what I heard was a commercial for the WB wed night TV lineup. Am I missing something here?

Correct, and that's only 68 of the total channels. I believe the others have some sort of commercial info on them.

XM Commericals

The XM run (music) channels are commerical free. Channels like ESPN have commerical breaks built into them, so something has to fill in the time. XM replaces a lot of that with programming notes, today in history, etc... but some comericals remain.

I'm pretty sure Sirius programming is better.

i heard the same thing, they say its commercial free but sometimes they advertise events and things that are going on just like regular radio. they will say something like "come visit us at the pepsi outdoor concert". they will carry on for a few minutes and its annoying as hell because its suppose to be commercial free and that to me is commercial.

XM Radio

XM and Sirius have very smiliar linups. Sirius does have the NFL, NHL, NPR, and a gay/lesbian station. XM has Nascar and a couple others.
I'm not sure how Sirius handles things like the ESPN commerical breaks.

it's not a commercial in that it's not paid for by a commercial product. If they pitch themselves, they aren't selling that time to anyone so it's not "commercial time" I don't mind the few pitches on the music channels. Try listening to Star94 in atlanta.. hell, any FM for that matter. THAT's commercials.

And I figure on the Comedy channel, the commercial breaks give me time to let my aching sides relax after laughing at the stand up comics half the time.

Man I love that channel. People along side of me in traffic think I have lost it or something.

I wish it was "half the time". For some reason, it seems like I only like around 10% of the comedy on the Comedy channel. Oh, well ...

Me too. It seems like there's too much "Bob & Ray", at least when I tune in.

They did have a great blurb from "All in the Family" with Archie saying it was time to take Edith back to the "groin-o-cologist".

I was just wondering about that - so is satellite radio not at the mercy of the FCC? Is it like cable where you can have some more mature content, but not quite like HBO? Or does anything go on XM?

yep the syndicated shows like ESPN have commericals. Sirius has the commericals too on the channels that are syndicated from TV. All of sirius' original programming is commerical free which is not the case with XM
