What is your best DVD-A disk?
So I have found the DVD-A format to be one of the best sounding musical formats to date. I am happy that my TL has a DVD-A player built in.
Now the question is what are the best disks to play in it. Eagles hotel California is damn good. Linknin Park reanimation has an incredible sound. The Police "every breath you take the classics" Is wonderful Foreigner 4 is also terrific. To be honest I found Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" To be bit disappointing. This disk (CD Form) is one of my reference disks. It is a great stereo mix. The 5.1 DTS version doesn't quite do it for me. Maybe it will grow on me. I am hoping that Neil Young's Harvest will grow on me. Led Zep's How the west was won is a wild mix with sound coming from all angles it really puts you in the middle. Please realize this thread/posting is not about a kind of music Please don't slam me for my choices. It is about how great the DVD-A format is and what is your favorite disk so far. Yaesumofo |
Agree on The Police, although I'm pretty sure that's a DTS disc.
The Best of R.E.M. is also a great disc. Yoshimo by The Flaming Lips is awesome. All of Sting's stuff is good, as well as Crowded House. What I have on order: Miles Davis -- Tutu John Coltrane -- Blue Train Led Zeppelin -- How the West Was Won Frank Sinatra -- At the Sands With Count Basie Eagles -- Hotel California Santana -- Super Natural |
I have foun that Live DVD-Audio's don't pick up the distinctive channels as well as music recorded in a studio. Led Zeppelin's "How the West was Won" is an example of that. Good music and fun to listen to, but it doesn't really show you the true quality of DVD-Audio.
What I have (so far) and the order in which I like them: * Doobie Brothers -- Captain and Me * Fleetwood Mac -- Rumours * BB King and Eric Clapton -- Ridin' with the King * Led Zeppelin -- How the West was Won Planing to get: * Blue Man Group (not sure which album) * Eagles -- Hotel California |

I'm positive there were several posts regarding favorite DVD-A discs, here's 2 of 'em:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...favorite+DVD-A https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...favorite+DVD-A This post will give you a definitive explanation of the DVD-A format https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...favorite+DVD-A Couple of my favorites: Grover Washington - Winelight Laurence Juber - Guitar Noir Steely Dan - Everything Must Go Bonnie Rait - Nick of Time Nine Inch Nails (DualDisc) - The Downward Spiral Future Buys: AC/DC - Back in Black (DualDisc) Dave Koz - The Dance (DVD-Audio) Doors - L.A. Woman (DVD-Audio) Tesla - Standing Room Only (DVD-Audio) |
I don't have much DVD-A. The best-sounding one I have is the Telarc recording of the 1812 Overture, but it's not something I play in the car very often except to demo the system to other people (the surround-sound DSD cannons are EXTREMELY impressive).
Aside from that one, I have "Pet Sounds," "Brian Wilson Live at the Roxy," and "Rumours." I think of these three the Brian Wilson concert is the best DVD-A, but part of that is that it is a much more recent recording than either of the other two and thus benefits from the hi-res format a lot more than the other two. For pure artistic merit "Pet Sounds" is obviously best. Finally, listening to "Rumours" always throws me for a loop when "Silver Springs" comes on at the spot where "Songbird" used to be. I don't MIND it so much as it just throws me off because I grew up with the original track lineup. |

My absoluet favs
Are first and foremost Buena Vista Social Club. It's amazing, it just feels like you are actually in the band. Olu Dara's DVD-A is ok too, although it's not his best one. I have a Marvin Gaye that's ok.
I do have the Telarc recording of the 1812 Overture as well, plus a few other european classical thangs, but i don't listen to them very often. They certainly need more of a selection--so little jazz, world and funk music. That would make my listening sessions better. And it sounds pretty tough to turn a dvd into a DVD-a, so it's a great technology  with not enough selection  for me. |
Linkin Park - Reanimation

Sorry :-jon |
I have Truth Be Told.
BT has not been the same musically since Billy Sheehan died. Unfortunately, uninspired music is not transformed by a 5.1 mix. Mike |
Blue Man Group - The Complex - it is the only DVD I have that really shows off the system. The Who's "Tommy" is pretty good as well.
|
Donald Fagen's Nightfly sounds superb. Highly recommended. Kamakiriad sounds great also.
|
"Classic Albums" - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Machine Head, Gaucho, Captain and Me, Night at the Opera, Homecoming, The Game, Chicago, Chicago V, Rumours, Tommy, Fragile, L.A. Woman, Hotel California. These are all pretty good.
80s-90s-00s - Both Donald Fagens, Yoshimi, Porcupine Tree, R.E.M. - Best, Both Steely Dans, Sea Change, Reanimation, Nine Inch Nails, Blue Man Group, Coors, to name a few................... |

REM - Automatic for the people

Well, since we obviously aren't limiting ourselves to just one "best" DVD-A, here are my three favorites so far:
Legion of Boom - The Crystal Method http://www.avrev.com/music/revs/legionofboom.shtml Audio - Blue Man Group http://www.avrev.com/music/revs/bluemangroupdvda.shtml One by One - Foo Fighters (A fairly subtle surround mix compared to the first two discs I listed, but a nice demonstration of how the extra channels enhance familiar rock music.) --John |
The Crystal Method - Legion of Boom is definitely the best DVDA!!!
|
These are the DVD-Audio's that I have
Carlos Santana - Supernatural (Maria Maria sounds amazing) Carlos Santana - Shaman (Listen to the Musiq track, great song, hot beat) Alicia Keys - Songs in A minor (have both the cd and dvd-A, not that big of a difference) R. Kelly - Chocolate Factory (Dissapointed: Not with the cd, but the fact theres not much difference between the dvd-a and the cd) Luis Miguel - Mis boleros favoritos (Dissapointed, nothing special) N.E.R.D. - In Search of... (Overall not to good, but the tracks Lapdance, Truth or Dare, and Am I High, make the dvd-a worth the $20 I payed) Linkin Park - Reanimation (Best use of the DVD-A by far) Mana - Unplugged (The cd is great, but not that big a difference with the dvd-a. However, Listen to the drum instrumental #9, Sounds amazing with the surround sound) Mana - Suenos Liquidos (The cd is great, not that much of a difference with the dvd-a however) 3 Doors Down - Away from the sun (nothing that gets ur heart racing really. Cd is good. They didn't take advantage of the capabilities of the surround sound however. |
My personal favorite is Beck Sea Change. A down tempo album, but great use of surround, very subtle, but very very well done. A close second is the flaming lips Yoshimi and the battle of the pink robots. I use track 4 to demo the surround sound in the car, and each and every passenger that has heard it walks away with a smile.
Other notable titles: Steely Dan - Gaucho Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Yes - Fragile Eagles - Hotel California Sting - Brand New Day Enjoy! |
Miles Davis -- Tutu  Now all they need to do is release Kind Of Blue on DVD-A.
Led Zeppelin -- How the West Was Won  Considering the age and the fact that it's a live performance, it sounds pretty good. |
so far the only dvd-a disc i have is the Foo Fighters

anyone with rap or hip hop dvd-a curious of how it sounds...
|
Out of the DVD-A's that I have here are the ones that I think sound the best.
Linkin Park - Reanimation Both Blue Man Group DVD-A's |

Yes:Fragile

Linkin Park - Reanimation (With out a doubt the best DVD-A out there for sound quality!)
|
For sound quality, the best DVD-A I own is the one that came with the car.
Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" is pretty good. I also have a bunch of the Silverline compilation disks, and they're nothing special. |
I bought the OutKast cd "Stankonia". It sounds pretty good, but I like my Seal cd the best.
|
I have Ryan Adams - Gold and it jams, not only is it the best DVDA I ever bought, it is one of my favorite cds period.
I also have Usher 8701 and it jams (alot of bass) |
Gawd! I just played QUeen's Bohoemian Rapsody,
In surround, and that is some bad mofo #$@ amazing... I'm not even a queen fan.. But what a great use of surround! |

Get it! in stock at: http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=14911 (good price too. I finally cancelled my Amazon order - since January and still no stock ) Other favs so far: - Sting - Brand New Day - very rich sound - goes well with TL interior  - Dvorak - S. 9, From the New World - Nikolaus Harnoncourt - dig the 3rd movement - Blue Man Group - Audio - my daughter is a percussionist - perfect for playing guessing games as to what instrument is next (was that the dumpster? or the PVC pipe?) - Police - (DTS) The Classics - includes original version of "Don't Stand so Close to Me" - essential! - Queen - Night at the Opera (Parsons engineered their original tapes well - this plays like it was made for 5.1 - the DTS version has laid down new neural pathways in my brain that have modified cheesy memories and laid bare Q's signficant musical talents  ) |

Eagles - Hotel California  Love it!
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors (planning to buy) |
I have Rumors and am quite disappointed by the wildly vaired quality from track-to-track. It's my understanding some tracks were engineered/produced by different people, hence the sound differences, but I'm less than impressed by this one.
Hey RSA: Maybe I should sell mine to you. :) My favorite surround disc (DTS CD) is Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth. I get lost in the sound of that one when played in my TL. |
The Who's Tommy is outstanding.
Just picked up R.E.M. Monster (sounds good but you really have to crank it up). Also just picked up Keane and Snow Patrol on DualDisc. Keane starts out subtle, but about halfway through really takes advantage of the surround sound. Snow Patrol is good, but doesn't use the surround sound as well. |
