Warranty doesn't cover coinage!

A few months ago my CD changer would continually eject CDs, and would not hold any new ones I would load into the system. I reported it to my dealer, and finally, after two months a replacement CD changer was shipped to my dealer for installment into my vehicle.

So they pull out the CD player, and there's freakin' coins rattling around! Which they then proceeded to explain that four-year olds putting a few quarters in the CD slot is not covered by the warranty.

Any thoughts on how they can be removed? I'm interested in quick, cheap, and easy. The service tech referred me to a local car radio shop that could remove the coins for a lot less than the dealer. But I was wondering about doing it myself...

Can anyone comment on the logistics involved in a DIY on removing the coins out of the changer?

LOL i see this all the time at my honda deal, people leave their kids unattended in their vehicles and kids think the cd changer is a piggy bank. I would recommend removing the cd changer and try removing some of the metal covers, some change may fall out and all i can say is shake shake shake! Ive also seen the change ark circuits in the changer which you may then need a new changer!

Taking out the CD changer/ Radio would be alot of work.. (metal strips suck)... How much did the dealer want?

If they do it and they bend the strips they fix them... Are you sure its change ? See if there is something they will do for you as goodwill... Maybe they can call you on a day that they are not swamped...

Good luck.

Wasn't paying too much attention to the possibility of doing it there at the shop. I was kind of in a state of denial on the whole thing. My wife spoke with the service tech. I was out at the time when they called.

From what I remember in the explanation: Basically what the dealer would do is remove the damaged changer and install a new one -> according to Acura shop SOP. The damaged changer would be shipped of to Acura Heaven in California. Acura Heaven would not grant warranty coverage to coins placed in by little kids.

So with the dealer I'd have to buy a new changer which goes for $1300 with them. Right after they mentioned the price the service tech immediately gave me a contact information for an auto stereo shop in the area.

You've mentioned it twice, so I'll ask. You don't *expect* them to warranty it do you?

It sucks and a damned expensive lesson. I say, "Take it outta their college fund. With interest."

Wish I could offer better advice, but I can't. Local shop for disassembly and repair would be the route I'd try. GL.

LOL, this happened to me with my Civic. I saw my son putting coins in there and didn't think anything of it until I tried to use my cd player. I banged it really hard and heard the coins rattling. I ended up taking the whole unit out and unscrewed the top part off the unit and the coins came out. I'm sure it's a lot more difficult to do with the 6-disc units though. I'd recommend a trusted stereo shop as well. Good luck.

If they won't attempt to open it up and fix it then just pay the labor to uninstall and install it. Take the player apart yourself and put it back together. More than likely it's not damaged.

look for a thread by a member named psheu, he dissected the radios and has a few pics that might help.

Junk yard might be able to get it to you for alot less...

Since they didnt do any work I would wonder if its in your account.. get one from a junk yard.. If it goes bad have them fix that one.

Smile It's Fixed!

I got it removed last week. There was only one coin - a quarter - in the tray!

Many years ago, I was a factory service technician for a car audio company. One day, I received a head unit with the customer's complaint, "Won't accept cassettes." Before opening it up, I plugged it in on my bench and tried to plop in a tape. Sure enough, it wouldn't go in. When I opened the top, I saw why. There was a whole Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie in the mechanism. I pulled it out, cleaned up the mechanism, and it all tested fine. I didn't bother charging the customer and I returned the cookie in the parts bag.
