Tired of Waiting..gonna just buy Sub/Amp..

Spoke with Aaron over at SSA and the new ICON is out and I was trying (as a total NOOB) to glaze over listings for preowned subs and such. Many members on here were SO helpful. But in the end; I have nadda right now. Aaron mentioned some really good deals this Friday; so I'm going to pull the trigger.

The ICON-12 (Do I get the D1 or D2?? no one can help yet w this question?)
the Sundown SAX-1200D

Do I buy a RF 3sixty.2 or the JBL MS-8?? Would one of them be the BEST way to have a clean high output sound??

I'm also looking for a enclosure (ported or sealed?) that is minimalistic taking up as little space as poss.

Thanks! Happy Turkey Day!

HEY! Had to delete my PM's like usual and totally forgot about helping. Sorry bout that...hopefully we can get ya ready to go now!

So a Dual-1ohm or Dual-2ohm sub would let you have these configurations for you amp:

Dual 1 Subwoofer
0.5 ohm load @ amp
2 ohm load @ amp

Dual 2 Subwoofer
1 ohm load @ amp
4 ohm load @ amp

Here are the specs for the Sundown 1200D:

1200 @ 1 ohm
720 @ 2 ohms
360 @ 4 ohms

The amp is underrated and though you'll likely get enough running it in 2ohm confuration, I would pick up the Dual-2ohm sub and run it at 1ohm. It'll be more than enough power and allow you to keep gains lower.

As for what you need to buy to hook it up..you'd be okay with a simple LOC or whatever if you wanted to save money. The ms-8 and 3sixty.2 will be beneficial if you know you're going to upgrade the speakers at some point. Having those for just a sub wouldn't really help ya too much as you would only be setting slope & x-over..and you can do that on the amp itself. If you wanted to go ahead and get one..the ms-8 will autoEQ and make the whole process a little easier, while the 360 you have to do everything yourself. If money is no option and you want sq, look into the Audison bit.1 or wait for the 3sixty.3 that can do active 3-way with sub. Neither one will really affect the SQ as tuning is up to the user, but the ms-8 with its AutoEQ might be able to help the new user make it sound better.

Ok..so about enclosures. If you want as little space as possible, sealed. Obviously. IB is likely out of the question. Ported will give ya sq that CAN be just as good, but usually takes a bit of EQ to level out. Pro's of ported is the obvious dB gain you get. With that amount of power and a beefy sub like the ICON, sealed should sound really nice.

With that power, for $10 more, you could run a 15". Box will be about a inch wider and about 2-3" taller. Mine is 14" tall and you could likely do 16" tall (maybe more too). Just a thought

I agree about running the 15 instead, better sound, more output at the same power, it's a win-win.

The MS8 was intended to optimize a factory system. I think it has the greatest effect on stock systems. If you want to take the time to do it, you can run the MS8 on the stock speakers and it would be easy to go aftermarket once its installed.

Sounds good...your arguments to up to the 15 sounds nice. I'm sorta afraid that I won't be able to do my Costco runs though? Gotta stuff a few cases of beer back there occasionally?! WHo do you guys like to have a low profile box built? Seems like Sealed would be better for me.

I think for the $600 the MS-8 sells for I could get a decent LOC that would just help with the sub alone?? The entire rest of my audio would be stock. And thanks; Dual 2 sounds great..I will wait for Friday and pounce on that sub...just lemme know bout buiding a box...OR having someone build one.

I really really wish there was a pre-owned amp out there; but time is a ticking and I think I'll get a nice deal if I get the 1200 SUndowner through Aaron over at SSA. I'll have the boys over at TriState Sound here in Delaware do the install in an afternoon. They do all the car shows here and they're top notch.

Thanks again!

The MS8 can be purchased for quite a bit less than $600 new. It will enhance your stock system, that's what it's made to do. Supposedly it works best with stock stuff. If you're curious about it, Jerry (Niebur3) on here is a dealer.

If you're only looking for a little extra bass, I agree that it's an unnecessary cost. Just make sure you won't want to upgrade in the future. This is an addiction for sure. A year ago I thought people who spend more than $500 on equipment were crazy and now mine has become a full blown top notch SQ install. Mine started out with a sub and amp for the first couple years, then comps, then more amps, then better comps, better amps, and so on.

You can always go infinite baffle on the 15 and take up almost zero room. I can't remember if we've talked about it in previous posts.

What was the deal he's giving you??

Icon 12: $284
Icon 15: $294
1200D: $395

As far as boxes, I think the 15" calls for around 2.25cuft sealed. You'd need to make sure though. For sealed boxes, prefabs "can" work. I bought mine from SonicElectronix and it's pretty nice. Solid. Of course I resealed it just in case they missed a few spots but besides that..can't beat it unless you find someone to build you one for $60.

The MS-8 can be had for cheaper I believe, but if you're just doing a sub then just wire up an LOC and call it a day. Better yet, get an Audiocontrol Matrix so you'll be able to do your fronts when that day comes. Can be found for around $100

$60 and 16" tall. There ya go

As far as amps, if that deal is good..get it. It's new and Sundown is a good company. Plenty of power. If you can't spend that much then just pick up the sub and get another amp in the next few daya

Black Friday...damned this is confusing! Ok...I really need to have storage space so I don't think 15s are going to fly. Sonic electronix features really hot price on the JL W3v3 dual 12 powerwedge... SSA had a great deal on two DCON 10s with a sundown amp... ...or do I still do two ICONs 10s or 12s...thanks...sales end soon!!

Well if you need space, 2 10's (and definitely 2 12's) will take up more space than a single 15. You have more cone area with 2 10's rather than 1 12, but you'll also be taking up more space. So it again comes down to space issues, but also power requirements. Dcon's seem to like ported more than sealed, so that'll take up even more space than normal. Looking at the SSA site...the 12" icon's went from $204 to $222 lol.....so might want to clarify that before buying. As for power, 2 icon's will require an amp twice as powerful as if you needed to run 1..obviously lol.

So what would you like?

The 1500d might be enough for 2 Icon 10's. Should be a solid setup for tight, hard punchy bass. High powered setup

the single 15 ICON is REALLY tight in my trunk...also..that enclosure you attached got semi-good reviews..actually a few people said if the sub were powerful the box started coming apart. Therefore..i'm much more inclined to do the single ICON 12 like we initially talked about with the Sundowner 1200?? (sounds good huh!?). But I need to know if you like the Powerwedge two W3v3?? is that decent?? Trunk...your a lifesaver!

I'd rather have the Icon. W3v3's can sound decent but don't play with much authority. That ICON will slam when it needs to and retain good SQ also. That ICON 12" and 1200D should be a great setup for ya. Order up and I'll cya back here in a month (maybe not even that..) when you want new components lol

Ok..quick question. First off, took advantage of Black Friday deals and FINALLY, YES! Ordered myself the ICON D2 12 Sub with the 12ooDamp. Will do a sealed setup for some punch and wanted to know if this is a good deal?? I could build myself but honestly it's FREE shipping via amazon and seems like a really good deal?
http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-SE12CC...d=S0YRRLF69PT6
So..I"m going to call the shop to get a quote on install; when I bring them the sub/amp/box...guess i'll just need good wire(s) and a decent LOC? Thanks for all the help!

Good deal. Glad you got the ball rolling with it. You should like it a lot!

As far as boxes, I don't see recommended box sizes on SSA's website so you might call Aaron there or anyone that can tell you what the best size for that sub is. I think I remember seeing it's bigger than the 1.25cuft you linked though. SonicElectronix is where I picked up my sealed box and it's actually a nice build. Not too hard to mess up a sealed box, but I've definitely seen it done lol. They've got 1.0cuft, 1.25, 1.5cuft & most are in square or angled on the back.

For wiring I'd recommend Monoprice all day long. Their premium RCA's are nice too. I've got a 15ft one sitting here right now and it's a very nice RCA. Not cheap and flimsy like most stuff. They've got all kinds of lengths for extremely cheap. I've always purchased all my wiring from them. Any HT audiophile can tell you they don't sell crap

Here's their speaker wire: http://www.monoprice.com/products/su...02&cp_id=10239

I'd go with the 15 and run at 2 ohms

Still wouldn't go with a prefab even for sealed.

Have my Sundown 1200, have my ICON12!! Now the enclosure company that WAS going to build my enclosure seems not to answer any more emails? So my plan was to bring the car into the shop for installation asap. Anyone have ANY great recommendation for a ported custom box? Or if I can't get a ported into the tight space at the very back of my TL trunk them I prolly need a sealed box? I guess the car audio store will tune the amp properly. Thanks...

So the amp kit I'm buying sounds like it comes witha sub par rca cable, and I also shop at Mono price, so I'm looking to order one from there. But the kit comes with a 17 foot rca cable. Do i actually need one that long to install an amp for a sub? or would I be OK with a 3 or 6 foot cable? I've never done this kind of install before, so I'm not yet familiar with everything I'll need

I assume you're using an LOC or wiring into the amp straight from the sub wires in the trunk. Assuming that....the RCA needs to be all of 6-8 feet
