Talking Sound system advice

hi guys I've been researching this for some time and have gone around in circles - I need your help.

I have 07 type s and the system is fine but its not loud enough. I was told simply replacing the speakers adding an amp and cross over, but keeping the original deck would fix that. The only thing i know about stereo systems is how to turn them on. does this sound like a good solution?

thank you.

i would start by adding a subwoofer as this often changes the sound enough. I am happy with the stock speakers.

This...if you have the money and direction for it. By that I mean your into audio and want more usually. If you're fine with the sound now then add a 12 and call it a day. It'll over power the mids/highs and continue to sound just meh, but it's all up to your budget and/or preferences.

sorry man I got no idea what your talkin about. I know how to do alot of things, but I simply know nothing about car stereos and related components. even though I said cross over in my initial post, i have no idea what it is.

stock sound system is fine clarity wise(for me) but it just doesnt get loud enough the and the bass doesnt go boom loud enough.

thanks for the help tho. I have around 1500 to spend I suspect thats no where near enough

Spend about $500-600 of that on a sub/amp and see if you are happy. If not, then it will take the rest of that $900-1000 to replace the front speakers with a good set of components.

Will you do the work yourself, or will you go to a shop?

OK - that sounds like a plan, gonna take it into a high quality shop for the work.

As soon as u put a sub in, you're gonna drown out your front stage.

so if you were in my shoes wth 1500 to spend, what would you do? I see your earlier post of

Processor>components>amp>

but you need to dumb it down for me. what is a processor? A deck? if so what kind?

I do appreciate this and I will be moving forward with advice from this board. I will take pics to so you guys can you see your handy work.

Processor takes the signal from the stock radio and manipulates it so that you can tune/adjust to your desire and the sound is usually cleaner. Components are high quality speakers for the front - there are components in there now, but they are not great. If you are a big-time audiophile requiring the best-possible overall sound, then you need to start here. If you just want some more bump, then just put in a sub and see if you are happy - your average person who wants some bass doesn't care about drowning out the front stage and just wants to feel a beat. Only you can decide this.

That 500-600 that I said won't go very far at a shop with retail prices and install costs. You might end up having to pay more. Before you go, start thinking about your requirements about how loud you want it to be, how good it has to sound and how much trunk space you are willing to dedicate to a subwoofer. There are a billion ways to do this that all seem to get back to these requirements.

Take a look at this link:

http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...cura-tl-s.html

Our stock amp puts out 25 W/ch to each speaker location (the front is split between the midwoof in the door and the tweeter in the dash) except the sub which gets 100 W. You will probably find that replacing this is going to be a key to delivering the performance that you are looking for. The only problem you're going to face is that if you upgrade the amp you're going to expose the next most limiting component of the system; and this is likely to be the sub. Take a look at what other installs are out there and if you aren't going to do the install yourself, talk to a number of installers and decide what they can do to fit your budget.

Good Luck

Budget of $1500:-- PLENTY for a decent setup that will please most

Speakers: COMPLETELY subjective. You need to either try to go to a few places and listen and find out whether you prefer a silk dome, metal, etc tweeter. If you can't do that (like most people) then you'll just have to figure out which one would fit into what you listen to the best. I prefer a warm, laid back (neutral) speaker b/c I've become accustomed to my Energy RC home theater speakers. I like music that sounds the way it was mixed in the studio. There are plenty of options as far as 6.5" components go so your in very good shape there. I was hoping to make a Stickey thread soon with all the most popular components, subs, amps, etc...as that would be a great reference for new to audio people. With your budget though, you can easily get a set of components and a nice amp to drive them and it will sound great! My personal preference companies: Image Dynamics, Polk MM (supposedly warm?), Dynaudio ($$$), Hertz, Rainbow...just to name a few.

Sub(s): This will depend on if you want to run 1 12", 2 10's, 2 8's, IB 15's, etc. Do you want as much SPL as possible with no regard for SQ? Do you want SQ and SPL? Purely SQ?

It sounds like you're wanting it to get loud but I'm sure you'd want it to blend well and sound good if your going to upgrade the components, etc. I'd check out an FI Q....sexay

Amps: Will depend on sub setup and whether you'd want to do a 4 channel and wire up the components, and a sub and leave the rear channel out...there are many possibilities for this also depending on if you'd like to just do components up front and not use the rear channels, components and/or coaxials(rear), etc.

Also, you'll need to factor in installation costs. Shouldn't be "too much" but it will hurt the budget lol. I'd say around, um...$350 tops.

No on the Polk stuff. Waaay to expensive and nothin special

1. I'd just do the front components for now.

2. DO NOT buy a pre-fab box

But seriously, go to a number of shops and talk with them in person. Find someone who know the TL and his gear. There is a school of thought that says that the quality of the install is more important to the overall sound quality than the quality of the components.

I would not do the rears. I would also only use one 12" sub with higher power.
