Sound deadening

I'm going to be adding an aftermarket sub/amp soon, and was considering doing some sound deadening while I have it apart. I did an extensive amount on my RSX-S, and was very happy with the results (regards to SPL, SQ, and outside noises).

The TL-S is a much quieter vehicle than the RSX-S, so I'm not sure how much I will need to do this.

For those of you who have done sound deadening on the TL, did you find it to be a significant improvement?

Thanks in advance.

So far, I have deadened my doors and the trunk area using Second Skin damplifier pro. I'd wholeheartedly recommend their product over Dynamat extreme: Regular damplifier is comparable to Dynamat extreme, Damplifier pro is better and cheaper.

Doing the doors definitely changed the character of the car for the better. It eliminated much of the mid-high frequency road noise entering via the door/window area. I can't say much as to the character of improvement in SQ from my system, as I haven't got my system completed yet (I'm doing something very similar to ITL and moahdib, you'll find them here and at the mp3car forums...I'm done with the touch screen install/display relocation, have yet to install my DLS Nobellium 6.2's up front and either a JL 10w7 or 2 10w6's to back them up, running on a JL 500/1 and another 4-channel, plus Alpine 701 for processing audio from my laptop.)

As for the install itself, it was easier than it was in my former Ford Focus. Just do a search on the repair manual scans of the door area and you'll be gold. I don't think I'll bother with the floor, it doesn't seem to carry much in the way of noise from either there or the firewall, although you might see some improvement if you decide to go that route.

My 06 TL is pretty quiet compared to most vehicles but it definitely has more road noise than the ES, IS, G35, A4, 335i, and C350. I'm pretty interested in installing sound deadening material myself. Thanks for the informative post.

I just placed my order, and plan on doing at least the trunk, trunk lid, and doors. It's a lot of work, but is usually well worth the effort. Now as soon as I find some of those scans to see where everything comes apart...

I agree on everything except the G35...I test drove a few, and it has quite the exhaust note as well as more tire noise, in my subjective view. Liked the handling, didn't like the price as much nor did I like the interior design as much.

Also wanted to mention that a few here have deadened the areas around thier speakers, including tweets, and noted performance improvements there. Hit the areas behind the in-door mids with some damplifier and a square of closed cell foam to improve speaker handling (unless you're using custom pods).

Nice, thanks. I'll definitely do the doors and maybe the floors if i can figure out a good way to do it. Maybe the dash.

I ordered up 50sq/ft of eDead v1SE, and a gallon of eDead v3 from Elemental Designs. Between the two of them, it should do the trick. If I need more, I'll simply add more.

While I was at it, I also ordered up an eDi NINe2.x amp (600x1), a 13Ov.2 sub and a sealed enclosure. For the LOC I got a David Navone N-85V.

I had eDi stuff in my RSX-S, and liked it very much...a lot of bang for the buck.

I hate to be a stickler, but there are some good reasons not to use peel and seal (I used some in the focus as a way to save $, so I have some experience with it).

1. It smells. Bad. Especially when heated. Like tar.
2. It can loose adhesion when heated (sound deadening doesn't matter when a piece of it is rattling around inside your door).
3. Sound deadening properties are not as good as an asphalt-based material that has the added characteristics of being rubberized...you'll have to use 2-3 times as much to get the same sound deadening you get from a "real" rubberized asphalt product designed for use in an automobile.
