SACD conversion to DVD-A

I don't know whether this question has been posed before, but can SACDs be converted to DVD-A?

For all intents and purposes, It currently can't be done.

Reason is... Sony's SACD hasn't been cracked.

What a few have done to get around this. Is buy a special
card that can record 5.1 analog or record each line one at
a time. But your recording is only going to be as good
as your equipment, since you have gone analog.

Major PITA. Better bet is to look for DTS disks! They
are easy, and tons of em.

The problem with recording the 6 channel SACD via analog outputs into a 6+ channel sound card/device is that in order to create a DVD-A you need an MLP encoder, because there will not be room on a standard DVD-R for the complete disc with 6 tracks per song.

You can do it if you use a 4 channel source, like an old quad 8 track or reel, but with 5.1, you will run out of space without MLP encoding.

An MLP encoder costs $2500 from Minnetonka, and requires DiscWelder Steel or Chrome. More money.

If you only want a few songs, it will work without MLP, but if you want the whole SACD, you are out of luck.

The main reason for MLP is to reduce the bitrate to within the rates supported by DVD-Audio at the highest resolution (192kbps/24bit) of 5.1 channel sound. DVD drives cannot stream that uncompressed bandwidth.

Creative Labs makes a sound card (part of the Audigy Platinum line) with six input channels. There is no reason that you couldn't record at high resolution into that card, downsample the tracks to 48kbps so that MLP is not required to play them from a DVD-Audio, and record the tracks uncompressed using Discwelder. I've made plenty of 48kbps 5.1 DVD-Audios (from Dolby Digital and DTS DVD-Video sources), and they sound very good in the TL. You can get about 2 hours of surround sound music on a single disc this way.

Yes, but you would be losing some of the detail. If you wanted to do 5.1 at 24/96, you must use MLP. If all you want is CD sound quality, then that is doable without MLP.

I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between your 24/96 sampled analog transfer and a downsample of it to 16/48 in the TL.

Yeah, I think along the lines of creation for preservation and listening in a surround home environment as well as in the TL.

Yesterday I was at Circuit City and they have dual disc. One side is SACD and ther other side is DVD-A. They didn't have a large selection however, I think some record companies may try this to satisfy the masses.

Just remember to look at the DualDisc very carefully. The all do not have DVD-A on them. Look for "Advanced Resolution", MLP, or the DVD Audio logo. If the DualDisc is from Sony or a Sony label, forget it. It will not play the DVD side in the TL.
