Nav Update Disc Almost Out!

Just checked the order page for the navigation update discs...

https://iweb.alpine-usa.com/Acuradvdsales/naviorder.php

Looks like we can expect inventory around Oct 20. Wonder if they will have any software updates included? I've always believed that if they do, the changes will be minor (ie. they won't add the features from the '07 models just to be nice), but I'm hopeful for a few minor add-ons. It'll help them sell discs anyway.

Much of the area around my house is very recently developed, so the $185 is definitely worth it to us as it will add in some of these new businesses (I hope).

I'd like to know if they updated any of the DC and northern VA area. A lot of roads around here are off on my 1.40c disc.

Yeah. I wonder if they updated it with the new 95/395/495 ramps (a.k.a. - Springfield Mixing Bowl).

Well, in the "Why update?" section, it says, "Occasionally new features are added to the navigation system. Consult your dealer for details."

So, It's possible...

I woudln't hold my breath for major updates to the maps. I have the 3.40 version and there are many roads that have been completed since at least 2001 in Austin that are still not correct in the 3.40 version.

I looked at that supposed list for what updates they did for the 3.50 version last year and for Texas it merely listed Midland/Odessa. Does that mean they didn't update ANYTHING else in the entire State of Texas. I'm still not sure whether to spend the $185 on the latest version.

Yeah, it seems like the updates on the disc are VERY vague and it makes it hard to judge if someone should/shouldn't purchase a new disc.

Like phone numbers, I know it isn't a big deal, but I've found a few phone numbers for local businesses that are wrong. Do they actually update that? And if they do, I'm sure they aren't going to list it in the changes section. It would just be nice to know if that kind of info is updated also.

They can only update what they know about. If you find an issue, NOTIFY THEM! They ask for that information....and need it to be accurate. Without feedback, they never know if there is an error or not.

I actually have notified them before and I get very vague responses about how they do drive around and note changes and whatever I suggested was noted. However, you'd think that for $185 they could send people to the major metro areas every year and update major roads that have changes. These are not dirt roads on someone's ranch I'm referring to.

I'm also wondering how much will get updated. I do know my 3.5 disc is pretty current with everything in my area that is fairly new (but more than a year old). But a lot of construction has happened in the last year. If we pay 200 smackers for a new disc and it is missing the more recent developments, I'm not going to be happy.

Acura/Honda gets their maps from NAVTEQ, and POI's too. So, depending on what updates of the maps they buy will depend on what is on the navi. I know I also have a Magellan Road Mate 6000T, I use in my Excursion, and it also has NAVTEQ maps. The maps on the Magellan (I purchased in August 2006) are more up to date than my TL. The main road I noticed is the road I live on. I live in a new development, and the TL does not have my street, but the Magellan does.

You may be able to find some more coverage info at NAVTEQ's website.

I'm not a saint when it comes to copying software, but in this case I think they are giving us quite a bit of value for the money and copying the nav discs will only hurt us in the long run. Acura has one of the best nav systems around. Sure, other car makers put in higher rez screens, 3D views, and so forth, but Acura's is the easiest to use, most reliable, and has the most content. And I'd much rather have that than good graphics. I'm continually amazed by how often we can find the restaurant, store, or ATM we are looking for. Just about every POI I ever needed is in there. If you ever find yourself lacking appreciation for the Acura nav system's quality, try sitting in a Bimmer, Mercedes or Porche and trying their systems. Lots of flash but nothing underneath. In particular, they have a SEVERE lack of road and POI data. You will soon find a new appreciation for the incredible value of Acura's system.

I want Acura to provide good updates each year, and as long as they do, I'm willing to pay for it. $15 a month is not too much to pay for solid data updates. Lets just hope the 3.6 disc meets my expectations though. If not, I'll certainly change my tune. But based on what I have seen in this system, I believe the update will be worth it.

By the way, the Nav Disc order page has been updated. Now it says inventory will be available around the 13th, not the 20th.

Lol, I am still running the disk that came with my 04 too. I have been waiting them to update the Dallas area. I hope the new disk has something I can use on it.

Has anyone even been able to upgrade their NAVi disc & have no problems?

I thought you couldn't use just any NAVI disc because the disc had to be matched to your system. Something to do with the serial # or something like that which I read in an Acura newsletter in this forum. I forgot which moderator updates those, but it was no more than 3 months back. The article was towards the end explaining the NAVi system & upgrades.

I know we can buy an upgraded NAVI disc, but do they ask you for any particular info that would only make that disc work in your car?

Im using the original disc that came w/ my 2004 wich is ver. 1.04 (2003/09). I hope within the last 3 years there is some good updates being released.

BTW, If anybody with the most recent Navi disc can input the following address in their TL to see if it shows up updated: 5631 Lone Tree Way, Antioch, CA 94531 (Home Depot). There's alot of development by my area & if this new Home Depot that was built a year ago shows up, then I know the new Navi disc will be worth the money.

Here's the service bulletin I was talking about: SB#05-018: Navigation System DVD Information. Go to this LINK in the forums & it's post #11. You will need Adobe Acrobat to read it. Other good info in there too.

Does anyone know if the Navi update offer any new features? Stupid things like new color backgrounds, voices, options, etc. Anything other than just updated maps?

Thanks

xristos: Any Acura nav system can use an updated disc. It just has to be the right version of the nav update for your car. When you order the disc, you specify your model and year, and it tells you which color disc works in your car. I believe they sell an annual update disc for every nav system type. Typically the new discs just contain updated map and POI data, but sometimes they contain minor functionality updates too. Most likely the 07 update disc for the 04-06 TL models will just contain new data, but there's a small chance they may tweak a few other things too. Everyone's pipe dream is that it will contain some of the features found in the 07 TL nav, but that's highly unlikely. One can hope though.

We will know what features the new disc will contain (if any) as soon as they offer it for sale and update their website. Check back on the 13th.

They have updated their site and the 3.60 update only contains new data,
no added functionalies for the nav system

This is the crap I was talking about before. Does this mean that the only place they updated maps for Texas was in El Paso? If so that is unacceptable!

That's what I figured. No new functions.

The list of cities shown there are only those cities that were converted from unverified maps to verified maps. See the faq below. They have also updated roads and POI data for many other cities not listed.

Q. What are the main differences between the DVD my system uses now and the update disc?

A. The mapping database team is constantly reviewing unverified areas, and converting them to more accurate detailed coverage. See the latest "map coverage" link, or the "Update History" link for a summary of the major cities added each year.

The Points of Interest (POI) database is constantly being refreshed. The refresh rated varies from area to area.

The update description only list areas that are converted from unverified areas to verified areas. Major metropolitan areas that are already in verified areas will also be updated to include POI changes and new roads. I do not know how accurate the new updates are. Roads just completed during the last year may not be on the new update.

I just ordered a new update for my 2005 TL. Once I get it I can post more info on what was updated. I live in the Raleigh, NC metro area and there are many new subdivisons so I can see how many new roads have been added.

I just ordered mine too. They have a good return policy, so if you find it doesn't contain enough new data to justify the price, you can always send it back.

I saw the return policy and I might just get it and if it doesn't have the changes I was looking for then I'll return it.

I would say no as they indicated that there were no new features added to this release and it probably depends on the generation of the navi.

It's not a problem to be fixed, you just have to set the state you are in. Alabama just happens the be the first one in alphabetical order. I forget the place where you set your state, but when I get in my car tonight to go home I will find it and post where it is.

I just ordered the 3.60, will be selling my 3.5 when I get it, than get to do all the mods again, haha.

Anyway I live in FL and we have had a lot of road changes, at times the damn thing shows me in a lake or something and I am on a highway... I hope they updated my verified areas better and POI, because some of these roads been done for years...

I think they need an online site to report problems too. I dont want to call them and do it, rather put in a address or something and put a note saying was unable to get directions to this place and area around... Oh well.. Anyway be on look out for my ebay auction, lol
