Motorola V710 question.

I tired of waiting for decent BT phone from Sprint!
Phone that I liked - Motorola V710 - seems to be offered throuh Verizon (second wireless provider I like ) , but...
recent reviews @

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/use....php?phone=475

suggests that Verizon lately criples BT capabilities and limits its to handsfree set???
I mean WTF?

Anyone who got phone RECENTLY can cofirm it ?

I got the V710 about a month ago, I don't have a bluetooth headset but I have no problem using it with the Handsfree Link In the TL. Works great except that it doesnt show the signal and battery strength on the dash.

I have the 710 too...very happy. You might want to wait for the 810 though...the Motorola website has some limited information about it. Apparently it is due out relatively soon as they already have print ads out for it.

Yes, I switched to Verizon from Cingular cause they changed their network and my OLD Nokia phone didn't want to work 80% of thew time, so basically I was make to get a new phone. Since I had just got my TL I wanted the newest BT phone, Verizon had just got the 710 in so I got that with a better plan.

Here is an email response I got from Motorola (10/4/04) on the firmware upgrade:

"I apologize for the inconveniences, I understand your frustration. The V710 is not able to transfer images and MP3 files because the OBEX profile has been removed from the phone by the carrier. With MPT 2.0 for the moment you will be able to use the V710 as a modem as the DUN profile in the phone is available, and to sync the phonebook and datebook via the USB cable with MPT 2.0. Motorola is working on a patch to enable the V710 to be Bluetooth capable. The only Bluetooth profiles in the V710 are the handsfree profile and the headset profile. Motorola is developing a firmware upgrde that will restore the OBEX profile on the V710, it will be released on November 2004. Thank you for your patience"

I had asked them about what and when for a firmware upgrade. I did not specifically mention the specific issues for the HFL, waiting to see if they would mention them. They did not, so I will have to specifically ask that question.

By the way, you can transfer images and MP3's by wire, using transflash memory and an adapter (or at least my 17-year old son says you can), but add about $60 to your cost (Amazon prices)

So is "handsfree profile" is one that connects it to our TL?

Yes you can. It works great I have a 128mb little card in mine to hold mp3's and a few images.

From what I've read, the v810 won't support bluetooth, so I don't think that'd be worth waiting for.

Confirmed. The V810 won't have Bluetooth, so it won't support HFL in the TL.

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=295

I have a V710, and it's pretty good. Yes, some of the Bluetooth functionality has been crippled by Verizon. But, if your plan is just to use it as a phone, you'll be fine. If you are interested in moving pictures and MP3 files to it, you'll be limited.

The V710 will be better after the next firmware upgrade (which has already been released to the FCC for approval). We should see it before the end of 2004, from what I've read. Some portions of the Bluetooth functionality will still be crippled by Verizon after the upgrade - Verizon wants everybody to use their "Get It Now" service to get files into your V710. You can still sync your V710 with Outlook with just a cable (or Bluetooth after the upgrade).

So far, the V710 has been the best phone I've owned, regardless of the limitations.

I love this phone and almost everything about it. Only thing I would change is its size

Latest on Firmware upgrade

Here is the email I received from Motorola on the question of whether the firmware upgrade will fix the signal strength and battery remaining issues:
In reference to your last e-mail, if the issue the phone is having with showing the signal strength and battery indicators is merely a question of information or data transfer to the car integrated system, the software fix should solve this matter, since this upgrade will enable the Obex profile in the phone and it will be able to transfer any kind of data and synchronize the contacts.

Not definitive, but encouraging.

I second that!!!! The V710 works fine in the TL. After I got my TL, Verizon wasn't offering a BT enable phone, I waited, the phone came out and was offered by Verizon, and I effing think the phone is a great addition to the TL.

Definitely, I bought my v710 the same day I picked up my TL . I also spent an extra $100 on top of the high $420 price of the v710 for the extended battery and other accessories.

How happy are you with the extended battery? I tend to leave my V710 in the center console plugged into the charger. However, since the outlet is energized only with the ignition, a fully charged battery lasts less than 2 days in standby mode. I recognize that the blue tooth was going to put heavier drains on the battery but I was hoping for more than 2 days in standby.

Other than the battery life, I am extremely pleased with the integration of the V710 and the TL. One very slick system.

As a Verizon customer, I was pretty excited when they finally released a bluetooth phone.

Now after having held the 710 in my hand and learned about its crippled bluetooth features, I would not touch this phone with a 10 foot pole. The build quality is poor; the phone is extremely BULKY and the bluetooth has been so unreasonably restricted by Verizon as to make it useless.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to jump ship from Verizon and switch to Cingular as soon as they start offering the Motorola V3 Razr. Now THIS is what a phone should be:

The V3 looks sweet, but if it's priced at $650-750, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

You are absolutely right on that point! I can't think of any phone that's worth that kind of cash. Rumor is that Cingular will be offering the V3 in the $300-$400 range with a contract. We'll see in a couple of weeks when it's released to Cingular stores.

Honestly, I can't stand how big it is... but I love not having to worry too much about charging it. I charge mine pretty much every night, I use my phone a lot.. (1200 minute plan). I love everything about this phone but its size and the camera is not really needed.

Man that V3 looks pretty nice, I hope it sucks so I don't have to spend the $600+ for that damn phone .
