Motorola V551 Cingular Question
I am using distinctive ringtones for some of my family--so when they call I can tell by the ringtone who it is. This is a very useful feature, but I find that when the same family members send me a text message it also uses the distinctive ringtone, so my problem is I cannot tell an actual voice-based call from a text message just by hearing the ringtone (and it plays a long time for a text). If I use the stock rings I can set up a different kind of beep for a text message, but if I want distinctive ringtones for a person then that's used for everything. Is there a way to have adistinctive tone only for calls and the normal "beep" for text messages??

go to Settings - Audio. Then under style pick whichever one you want to configure (exp. I have mine set to Vibe and Ring so I'll use that for the example). So after you select Vibe and Ring, go down one and select Vibe and Ring Detail. You'll have a lot of different options from Ring volume to calls, txt msgs and stuff. Go to Text Msgs: and you'll be able to pick a new ringtone for text messages.

That doesn't work for distinctive ringtones (special tones you assign for certain people). The distinction tone overides the style detail settings and phone calls AND texts come through with the special ring. I contacted Motorola and they confirmed that the phone does function this way. They said they are passing my suggestion for a software update to the design team.
