Angry Kicker L5 "ceased"? wont move?

ok i have 2 12" kicker l5's on a vx1000 all very good stuff nothing cheap when it comes to my car. i was driving fast on the interstate and then my system just went out.. so i stopped by sound advice were they put it in and i blew a fuse so they fixed it but it was still weird..so i popped the truck and one subwoofer was moving the other one like a rock. he said the coils expanded and the subwoofer ceased? wtf!!! and i need a new one...

Having worked for a install shop, I have seen this quite a bit. The voice coil actually melted and ceased inside the magnet. It is a common problem when the sub is over played. It is hard to hear distortion when driving down the road with the windows down and that is what caused it to cease in the coil. The fuse popped because the amp overheated and drew more current then it is designed to.

Are you running it in a sealed or ported box?

Learn the limits of the subs. Open the trunk and turn them on. Slowly turn up the volume, when they start to sound distorted, you have reached their limits. The other option would be to put them in a sealed box. It would not "sound" as loud, but you would get a better sound.

A ported box does not offer any resistance on the back side of the sub, therefor allowing the sub to reach its peak much sooner. A sealed box will offer a crisper, more accurate and tighter bass.

i've done the same on an L5 before. Make sure the amp you're running matches the Ohms of the Sub you are running. Like 2ohms or 4ohms depending on what L5 you got. They come in both dual 2ohm and dual 4ohm voice coils. But yeah overpowering can melt them coils quick! that and underpowering a sub as well

OP: Kicker subs have gone down in qulity and higher in price. Get better subs and amps. The L5 do blow easily, was the ported box custom made for the subs? If so what is the box tuned at, and were is the subsonic filter set at on the amp.

yea dnd is right. the L5 since it is a square sub it is not exactly profecient as compared to a more natural round sub. the l5's are actually very common to give problems like this. i don't know the exact reasons but if you check out alot of car audio forums or ask around you will hear the same. i almost bought some until i heard that and got the cvx's instead because they are basically the round version of the l5. so yea, like they said you prolly wanna know the limits of that sub cause it is more prone to freeze up compared to a round sub. make sure its tuned right and dont push it past the limits. kicker isn't cheap or anything but they did recently stop making their products domestically and now have them made in china. they have good product but its not near the best. definately an SPL sub. assuming you have the 06 L5 models, you wont be overpowering it as the subs are rated at 600watts rms each. you might wanna turn down the gain on the amp and maybe the deck as well. kicker has really good warranty so you might be able to get it warranited as long as it is still under it.

oh yea, these type of subs are made for ported boxes. prolly dont want to put them in a sealed box
