Yep. The outside of the speaker measures a little more than 4.25"
Ohhhhhh so that is a 4" mid. So I could totally put the woofs in the doors then? Would you do a set of kicks that houses the tweets and the 4" speakers? I'll send you a PM.

I just wanted to publicly thank Jerry (niebur3) for taking the time to answer my newbish questions. This was on a Saturday night and he spent 1.5 hours of his time on the phone answering questions. For those that don't know who he is and what he's done, take the time to search around on diymobileaudio. It's great to be able to talk to someone at that level and get any and all questions answered.

Thanks for the kind words, anytime!!! Part of that 1.5 hrs was my fault though, I love to talk about this stuff and can ramble, he, he, he.

I hope to have some updates in the morning. Been working like crazy, but everything is half finished and I like to show start to finish pics. The weather has caused the recent ADD like work, but I'll post what I have anyway.

I'm a rambler too. I was also writing stuff down as quickly as I could. The only reason I had to go was I was getting dirty looks from the GF otherwise it probably would have gone on for several hours lol. She was just shaking her head at how I could talk about such "boring" stuff for so long lol. I'm thinking it's not a good idea to tell her that I'm getting the Dyns.

diymobileaudio is a great site. I'm always lurking there especially in the classified section. Dyn's sound amazing but you have to pay to play with those.

Mostly about how the Dyns sound since no shop in the area carries them. Lots of questions about install and TL specific stuff. Some of the theory and stuff that I'm not too good with.

Okay....an update is finally here. Due to weather difficulties, I have several things half finished, but should have tons to post in the next week. Here is one of the things I have about 90% finished. Since I decided to go aftermarket with the head unit (P01), I wanted to make sure it looks as factory as possible. Here is the result.

Before:

After (well kinda):

I purchased a second HVAC/Radio sub display to complete this look (the original one the car came was cut a fabricated to fit the monitor). I used this because it already had all the curves from the factory built in with a flat surface to work with.

I started trimming:

I then cut the factory plexi and started test fitting the new head unit.

Now, the factory trim pieces covered with aluminum need to be addressed. These pics give you an idea how I am dealing with this. The aluminum was removed and the 1/2 circle was filled (on 1 for now), then I stopped until I can get everything mounted in the vehicle to see if any further filler will be needed around the radio. The final pieces will be covered in Di-noc brushed aluminum wrap.

The sub display for the HVAC will be desoldered and extended with wire from the factory board so it can relocated in the opening right above the head unit. I will provide pics as soon as I am finished.

Thats all for today!

Are you saying that you are gonna cut up the HVAC/RADIO display and just mount the HVAC display where the clock is? I always thought that would be a pretty cool thing to do. I, unfortunately, don't have the skills, the funds, knowledge, or balls to try anything even close to this.
Can't wait for this to be done

what do you estimate a final cost of this would be?

This is cool, have you gotten the center channel in yet? If so, Id love to see some pics. The weakest part of my audio is my center right now, and Id love to put a 4"mid with a dedicated tweeter if it would work. I assume you will not be running that off the MS8 amp, correct?

I have some pics, but it is not installed as of yet. Hopefully it will get done today. I will be installing a Esotar2 430 and a small tweeter each running off a channel of an ARC 4200se.

I will be using the crossover in the amp between the tweeters and the midrange in the front and I am using a passive in the rear.

What will your wiring from the MS8 look like? Will Ch 1/2 be your tweets, 3/4 mids with amp xover for 3way, 5/6 be sides, 7 center and 8 sub? On the ms8 set up it says you can do a 2way active center, but I would not know what that wiring diagram looks like.

Cant wait to see your center install!

I also got the wiring completed and the decoupled floor barrier down. I use all IXOS wire (0 awg power wire, gamma speaker wire and Ixotica RCA's)

Here is the speaker wire:

Here are the RCA's:

Pics of the wire termination:

Wire runs in Techflex and tied down every 6 inches or so:

And finally the floor barrier down:

Center Channel Pics Next!

Those kick pannels look amazing. I have never tried mids only in the kicks without the tweeter being down there as well. Do you think the tweets in the dash will help lift the soundstage? I would like to talk with you once you have the system complete. I will be curious to hear how well the system images with the speakers separted like that. Do think there is room to add the tweeters in the kicks as well? Awesome job so far looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Very nice! I'm so glad you're doing this like one step ahead of me so I have a nice template. You can bet I'll be looking at your pictures as I'm doing it. I'm ordering my dyns tomorrow and a just got another big shipment of damplifier and luxury liner so I'll be busy the next two weekends for sure. Then hopefully the 15s come in by the 3rd weekend. No idea how this thick stuff is supposed to fit under the head liner but we'll see.

Center Channel Pics!

First I cut a piece of MDF the same shape as the original center channel cover.

I then did a test fit with the speaker and the cover.

I added a mounting piece for the tweeter.

I had to (very carefully) trim some of the edges where the old cover mounted to fit the new MDF piece.

Here is the Dynaudio Esotar2 430 with the Dyn Tweeter mounted.

I added some deadening to the outside of the orb.

Center Channel mounted in the car.

A view from underneath when mounted in the dash.

A couple of pics with the grill in place. I just covered the factory grill after cutting the openings for the speakers with grill cloth.

That is it for tonight. Will be working all day tomorrow!

Awesome and amazing work!!!

The real questions is how much weight are you adding to the car?

I know this is a a show car for you sound but i am just curious how much you have added....from the looks of things it could be upwards of 300lbs+...true/false?

The key to where you can mount the tweeters comes down to your processing/crossovers. If you are running passive crossovers, you will want to keep the mid/tweet as close together as possible. If you are using active processing, then you can separate them, especially in a 3-way with the crossover point being up so high. The tweeters will probably bring the stage up a little bit. There is probably room in the kicks for a tweeter.

Dude, I'm super impressed! Your work looks awesome. Very professional, everything looks great, with high quality audio gear.

Kinda makes me feel my stuff/work is amateurish is your trunk gonna be a show peice or are you going for more of a stealth look. Keep it coming, I love threads like this.

Those center pics are great, thanks for posting them. In your 4" midrange test, what were some lower cost high performers that would be good in this install?

When actively crossing over the separate drivers, how do you get the three drivers to blend to sound like one unit? It can't just be setting crossover frequencies, is there a time delay in there somewhere?

I can send the review to you again, but I believe the Scan Speak 12m's were the other drivers in the top tier. The Rainbow Vanadiums did really well also.

The MS8 does time delay and the important part of it is the time delay between the midrange/midbass and then between the midbass/subwoofer.
