Has anyone been able to do real 5.1 with their dvd players?

hello, just wandering,
but everyone who installs a dvd player, has anyone actually set it up to use actual 5.1 sound?

to anyone that has had their car apart, does the stock head unit send the signal to the amplifier via one digital coax cable or is it separtated at the HU and inputed to the amp via several wires?

of all the hacks and what nots i would assume this would be rather simple. being that were one of the only, if not the only cars that have stock 5.1 surround sound id hate to waste it to shotty 2 channel! any advice would be appreciated!

from my research I haven't found anyone with a solution, but I think i may have found a work around.

https://acurazine.com/forums/car-parts-sale-361/fs-racing-hart-3-piece-c4s-tires-137728/

only thing is it's quite expensive. just to get 5.1 the DSP is 900 dollars and the 3sixty is 400-600 dollars.

so you're looking at 1300-1500 dollars to get 5.1 in your system

ps. all dts and dvd-a decoding is done in the unit itself. as far as i know we can't "tap" into the 5.1 of our car streo directly.

to answer your question the headunit sends out 6 seperate signals via 12 wires(6 positive and 6 negative)to the amp.

so i'm pretty sure you can tap into those wires if your DVD player has a seperate output for each channel

hmm, its just such a shame being im a huge dts buff, i can actually decode that in the car and i have a moniter, adding a dvd should complete the puzzle, not complicate it!

maybe do they make something that separates a coax to the 6 separate channels? like a box? but that would still have to be inputed to the headunit, correct? you cant just splice into the amp because it doesnt decode anything, the headunit does?
