Hi, just wanted to see if those more knowledgeable could let me know is this HFL has Been upgraded from the original? By upgraded I mean I know there was some company offering capacitor upgrades since that was thought to be the failing component.
The unit works fine, although the prompt menu seems to be different then what I remember from the original one. Maybe there was a HFL firmware upgrade I didn’t know about.
I don't think replacing caps does anything with these. The failure mode is BGA solder fracturing, like everything else with a BGA from the mid-aughts.
I appreciate the helpful response. I think I had an iPhone go bad because the modem had an issue with something similar. I think if it wasn’t covered under warranty the only fix was micro flow soldering or something like that.
My dad was an electrician and would experiment was Tesla coils and other electrical systems, but soldering has gotten further and further from being fixable without complex camera systems it seems.
Just tried the fix with the link I posted above and it worked. My HFL is working again and pairs with my iPhone 12 Pro. Glad to have it back. Let’s see how long it lasts.
So I just found one of these units with the "100pF Reworked" sticker at the junkyard. On close inspection solder appears to have been re-flowed across the entire board. I wonder who was doing these and what exactly they did.
I threw it in the car and it is working. I guess we'll see.
