Firmware Question
While responding to an inquiry, I have learned how to find the phone's firmware version. Since I am new to cell phones, here is my question: What is firmware?

Firmware is programming that is inserted into programmable read-only memory (programmable ROM), thus becoming a permanent part of a computing device. Firmware is created and tested like software (using microcode simulation). When ready, it can be distributed like other software and, using a special user interface, installed in the programmable read-only memory by the user. Firmware is sometimes distributed for printers, modems, and other computer devices.

Basically it's the system instructions for your phone (or many other electronic devices) It resides in the phones ROM (read only memory) and can be flashed (upgraded) when new operating instructions are available/necessary. The firmware version can indicate how old the operating instructions for your phone are.
If there are known problems with your phone, and the manufacturer creates a fix, they will issue an upgraded firmware version. By "flashing" the new firmware onto your phone, you overwrite previous operating instructions with newer ones (kind of like a software upgrade) which can sometimes resolve problems you may be experiencing.

Thanks Brew and Rets. I guess one is never too old to learn. I assume this firmware is physically located in the phone itself, rather than the little "sim" card that I inserted after purchase. True?
