Class action lawsuit against Acura - HFL Battery drain
#123
Does anyone know if new phones still connect to the HFL? My HFL just went a few months ago and I don't want to replace it if my phone won't be able to connect to it. I have an S7 Edge and I could never get it to connect to my phone. It connected to my S5 and S3 before that with no problems. I even removed all of the other phones that were connected and that still didn't work.

CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT UPDATE
Regarding the HFL (Hands Free Link module) that drains the battery - see my original post aboveAcura HandsFreeLink Litigation Update:We are pleased to share that on March 26, 2018, Judge Jon S. Tigar denied the majority of arguments made by American Honda Motor Inc. in their Motion to Dismiss. Judge Tigar’s order represents a victory for consumers. Judge Tigar explains in his order that Plaintiffs sufficiently allege a defect within Honda’s exclusive knowledge, and that Honda withheld information from Plaintiffs, so a large number of Plaintiffs’ consumer protection and warranty claims can now move forward.
A status conference is scheduled for the end of the month. Plaintiffs are excited to move past the motion to dismiss stage and begin exchanging discovery in earnest. We look forward to building on the momentum of this recent win by undertaking robust discovery in the next few months and moving for class certification later on this year.Thank you,Steve W. Berman

I have 106k on my 08 TL and at 103k the HFL packed it in. I have since got the thing disconnected. When the "booting up" message happens, the HFL drains rougly 9 to 10 times the milliamps over the acceptable current draw. A local Honda repair shop diagnosed this straight to the HFL.
My question is, I live in Canada however I imported the vehicle from the United States. This is a U.S. car from a Greater Seattle dealer. Can I register for the class action coverage or is this for American citizens only?
Thank you.

When I boght my TL last year I had been trying to connect my iPhone X to the HFL but I wasnt sure if the unit was faulty or my phone just wasn't supported by the device. I did have a battery issue with the car when I bought it but replaced the starter/ altenator/ battery and the battery drain issue seems to have gone away but my phone still wont connect with the HFL. Does this sound like a faulty HFL unti?

Though I signed up for this thing last year, what is going to come of it? Surely not the reimbursement cost of replacing the HFL and/or a car battery? Do you think we'll just get a $10 check in the mail? lol

$10? are you being generous? 3g TL sold more than 300,000 units remembers those Lawyers firm take their 40-45% cut before distribute the rest to the owner. In another words the firm just used the piss off consumer to fuel their law suit once they are done winning the case your value are good as a pebble laying on the side of the road. I hate to say it but that a reality.

in the end we will receive some stupidly small amount of money and still stuck with a death HFL, the car is too old now for extended warranty to be issue by American Honda Motor. That why when come to class action lawsuit I am not a big fond of, its all about the money and not address the issue that end consumer facing. I can see these lawyers now playing golf with Honda cooperate peoples and laughing as how dumb at the "piss off consumer".

I disconnected my HFL a couple of years ago and my battery will still die if it sits for a couple of days, especially if its cold. Acura/Honda is just not what it used to be.

I have heard anecdotal reports the A/C Compressor's clutch can cause a battery drain which exhibits the same symptoms as the HFL. Wouldn't it be ironic if your HFL was operating properly and it was the clutch which was causing the issue?

I just signed up for the lawsuit info.
I just bought a 2005 MDX Tour/Navi. I specifically got an old car because I don't drive much... once a week is not abnormal. I often travel for work, and need to be able to leave a car in an airport parking lot for up to 2 weeks at a time.
Had the car for 2 weeks, doing a rare bunch of driving... finally let it sit for 4 days without driving... and it only had battery juice to unlock the doors. Wouldn't turn over the engine. Luckily, I'm well versed with battery charging due to my dog hitting the dome light in my previous car... and draining the battery when I didn't notice for a week or so (I did say I don't drive much, right?). Got it juiced up enough to run it to the local Les Schwab center for a new battery. They had previously told me the battery was "fine"... but I figured having a new one with a known heritage was an easy first step on the road to reliability.
Replaced the unknown vintage Interstate battery with a nice new, big one.
It seemed to work well... went 5 days without going dead... luckily that was a short biz trip, as the next time it sat for 8 days it was DEAD, no power to even unlock the doors.
Just unplugged the HFL tonight, and the battery voltage seems to be holding, so far. I'll know more later this week, as it sits.

I just this back from the law firm last week.
Hello,
This case is currently in the discovery phase with Class Certification briefing scheduled for mid-2019. We do not know at this time what the outcome of the lawsuit will be, so we cannot say what compensation there might be, including if they will do repairs for no charge.
Thanks,

$800.0???
I'm a big fan of Acura, but this really pisses me off. Acura knows bloody well they have an issue with their Bluetooth modules on 04 to 08 TL.
If they know this, why are they charging me $800.00 plus installation for a frik'n module?????????

So you expect Acura to repair/replace the module in their 10+ year old cars? Are we doing a class action about their engine mounts and the front compliance bushings why we are at it? What about our dashboards? I get that it is annoying...but almost any car these days has certain common issues.

Just found this thread, helped me a lot. Thanks.
My HFL worked on and of this whole year until it finally gave up a month ago.
Left the car for 2 days for the first time and it almost did not start.
Charged the battery and after a week I left it for 2 days again. Would'nt start. Totally drained.
Recharged battery again for many hours with a heavy duty charger. Started instant again.
Found this thread and related to the HFL not working anymore.
Removed the HFL unit yesterday after searching how to on this forum. Hopefully this solves the problem.
Also new battery a year ago.
This is a Eurospec Honda Legend 2008 Kb1

A) The design is defective, as are many BGA applications from the 2000s.
B) The defect can leave you stranded.
C) There is no real remedy (replacements are also defective).

Has there been a precedence for this? have other companies all had class action lawsuits due to failed BGA applications?

Oh yeah.. how could we forget about that
But All M$ did was up the warranty length, I don't think they settled for any money did they?

FYI - Acura is finally getting sued over the dead battery issues caused by defective HFL module. I have a 2005 TL that the battery goes dead after sitting for a few days. Had to disconnect the HFL like everyone else because I don't want to pay to have it fixed. The attorney's website has an easy online form to fill out to be added to the lawsuit.

CASE UPDATE
Judge Jon S. Tigar, of the Northern District of California, recently denied (download Judge Tigar's Order) in large part Honda’s requests to dismiss plaintiffs’ claims—representing a big win for consumers. In doing so, Judge Tigar found it was plausible that the HandsFree Link defect posed a safety risk because drained batteries could cause the car to stop unexpectedly on the road. He also found that plaintiffs have adequately plead that Acura/Honda knew about the relationship between the HandsFree Link and drained batteries as early as 2005, but withheld this information from consumers. With this decision, a large number of Plaintiffs’ claims are allowed to continue.
Plaintiffs anticipate filing an amended complaint by July 2017, which will update some of the allegations at issue, and are eager to move forward with the discovery process in order to build on the momentum of this recent win.
