Can we power decent speakers with stock amp if we don't want it real loud?
I have an issue on a new install with a JL 300/4 and Polk SR6500s. I am using only 2 channels on the JL to power the front SR6500s. The rear speakers are Infinity Kappa (2 ohm) running off the factory amp. My thought is to use the other 2 channels on the JL for a sub.
I am running speaker level from the Acura amp into the JL. I have the input set to high and I have the level turned ALL the way down. With this setup, the SR6500s are quite a bit louder than stock at a given volume setting (I used to listen around 6-8 and now I listen around 4-5). They also seem to be somewhat intense (sound great if you crank them but I want to save my ears).
As an experiment I tried running the SR6500s off the factory amp and they actually sound pretty good. It is hard to tell much difference other than volume. I do have to fade the level toward the front in order to get the front volume above the rear (rears are 2 Ohm and fronts are 4 Ohm). I also need run the volume about 8 – 10 with this setting. When listing to XM or FM, I do have to go to about 16-20 on the volume but I don’t normally listen to them because they do not sound very good. At this point I am thinking of using the SR6500s without an external amp. Am I crazy?
BTW The SR6500s sound fantastic but they are NOT plug and play. Don't get these if you don't want to do some metal cutting on the doors (it's not really that big of a deal).
