Ok so I just got my battery changed from Acura, it's was pro rated so I wasn't out much but get this....I made a friend at the dealer (I work for Dillards and sell shoes) and he recognized me cause I sold him a few pair. He told me that he would just charge me for the BT module at his cost $180 and could install it for free !! I figured I could give him a few bucks and that's that. That saves me the big $800 "Stealer Dealer" amount.

Have them contact the Honda corporate service rep for that dealership. It took me 2 weeks to get my answer from them.

Ok, my oemacura payment was returned and now i can place the order for the $170 one. Turns out it was released as a replacement for the $140 unit and supposedly won't end up having the same problem. I'd rather pay a little more now and never have this problem again.

I should mention that my replaced HFL module cooperates much better with my Bluetooth 2.0 phone, so there must be new firmware in the replacement part.

My new capcitor didn't fix my problem either. Worked for a few minutes and then nothing. Looks like I will have to order a new unit too.

fyi. My new part from Parts.com seems to be working fine. Only issue is that the plastic seems to rub on something and make noise. Anybody have this problem? Is it because I have the nuts on too loose or too tight?

not sure but sounds easy enough to check...I noticed when I brought mine in for diagnosis, they put some felt thingy on the side of it to keep it from rubbing. Seems easy enough to fix.

Looking forward to having aagoodo working unit again.. LOL.

Do you know what dawned on me last night?

Someone mentioned that the newer unit has a newer firmware that works a lot better. With all the new smart phones out there and the constant software updates (especially HTC) maybe we're getting updates that are affecting functionality with the older bluetooth technology that a 2004 Acura has.

Any thoughts!?!?

HTC Evo on Sprint, here.

Good to know, thank you!
I just installed mine...well worth the $180 to keep one feature on the car I consider to be it's a selling point. I spent 15 minutes swapping it out and reprogramming my closest family and friends. It seems to respond to commands a lot fast...maybe placebo?!

Thanks to Tim at Acura, too...he responded to all my questions. I thought we were getting hustled but it turns out the old part number is no longer even on the site. Extra 40 bucks wasn't a deal breaker for me. This means even at a "hookup" price from the dealer, they were charging me 150 in labor for 5 mintues worth of work. Thanks, you're a real friend!

HF working again...Wife says "WoooHooo!"

I've been busy but wanted to post an update. I got my unit from oemacura. After opening it, I realized that my wife has the "IVORY CREAM" interior and not "Light TAN". So, instead of sending it back, I simply swapped the HF unit into my original bezel. After sewing it all up unit works again. Thanks to everyone who posted.

The install tips and tech bulletin were very helpful.

Took me 15 minutes because I had to run back into the house and get the new HFL out of the box and packaging before installing. It should take less than 10 minutes to install.

The new HFL seems to work perfectly so far, after using the setup and entering the phonebook info into the new unit. Now people can see me apparently talking to myself in the car again.

Click on the link; you can save the Acrobat ".pdf," but you will only need pages 1-3.

even better...write up:
flat screwdriver to pry down light part of upper console
This exposes the 4 8MM bolts. Undo those and unplug everything...reverse to put back. Should be 10 minutes or less.

No, you missed a step.
1) Use a thin knife or feeler gauge blade to pop out the sunroof switch, which can then be disconnected from its multi-pin connector.
2) Then use your fingers to grab the rear of the hole left by the sunroof switch and just pull down on the overhead console containing the map lights, switch and Homelink before unplugging it from its multi-pin connector.
3) That exposes the four 8 mm bolts holding the HFL bezel...

It will take 10 minutes or less, though, unless you run back and forth to unwrap stuff and find tools in the middle of the process.

Very low injury potential in doing this repair, too, for those that are all thumbs.

Actually...didn't miss it. Just figured it would be redundant. I use a small flathead and it works just fine to pop that out.

Good Thread! just what i was looking for.. however i hardly used the HFL in my car in the first place..but after getting a dead battery and replaced it with a new one...my 06TL kept dying after a day and had to get it jumped practically every morning. such a pain. good thing i found this and disconnected the power that is feeding into the HFL. and Yes it was warm to the touch after opening the module. hope this stops the draining of my battery Also got the battery tested before i took things apart and both battery and Alternator is in good condition. Ill provide feedback soon! Just hate having the feeling of not being able to drive my car whenever i want.

Yeah, between not being able to use the HFL and being stranded, I'd opt for the first one any day too. Thanks for sharing and keep us posted.

i read through every post on these 6 pages. I just now purchased an 07 acura tl and love the car, but noticed this morning (the morning following the night i purchased the car) that i couldn't sync my phone. I would select the HFL and it just stuck on "Booting Up"..wouldn't go any further. Im assuming im likely experiencing the same core issue as yal, just different problem. Im new to this site, as well as new to acura. I was previously a GM owner. Thanks and kudos to everyone who contributed to this form.

Just ordered mine from OEMacuraparts. I will be anxious to get this thing working again as I've been HFL-less for about a year and a half. I've had it disconnected this whole time since I have the "booting up"/battery drain issue. I'm not sure about this delay box item though. It sounds as though its a fail safe so the battery does not drain if the HFL screws up and leeches the battery to death. Anyway, my price was 173ish. 185 shipped. Fingers crossed!

My '06 TL HFL

Hello all, i have recently purchased my second Acura. Put 367k on my '98 before ole Shep gave up the "ghost".
My '06 i have had for a week and guess what... the HFL starts wigging out! I think that i am going to take it into the dealer to report the problem and then replace the part myself. I have searched the web and found an OEM parts house that sells the unit for $181 and change. I don't mind extended miles on the car as the drive train holds up, but it would be nice if the simple non-moving parts would not fail from the manufacturer. In my business we hold our manufacturers to a high standard of performance for what they sell.... Honda?!

Yeah, their defense is that it was the first bluetooth unit put into a car on the market so we were kinda the guinea pigs.

I got that 180 one and it did the trick...seems to pair much faster too and the other day I had the volume down and the speakers made a phone ringing sound, which I had never heard with my old BT unit.

I am wondering, if part of the feature set of the HFL is to allow up to (x) amount of time to talk after the car is turned off and from reading post of "dead battery" etc, it would appear that the manufacturers part is suffering from being powered on for extended amounts of time over the years. And if it is the root culprit of draining the battery, i would suspect that the issue is how the module manages power consumption during whether the car is on or off....thoughts from someone more technical than i?

That depends on the settings you select-- I varied between the audible ring and the female voice announcing the incoming calls. I settled on the audible ringing.

Yes, the manual mentions that the HFL was to remain operable for 30 minutes after the ignition is turned off. There was a TSB for replacement of some '04-'05 HFL mic units due to the HFL remaining on after the 30 minutes.

Thumbs up

UPDATE with GREAT NEWS... Ended up waiting until last week to get my HFL fixed. I have been out of town and moving to St. Louis - Uhg, I hate cold weather but work calls!

Anyway, as we all know the price of the unit has come down so my grand total on my HFL repair was $56!!!!!!!

This thing works flawlessly now.

He called his rep and after 3 weeks he called me and said that Acura would cover 80% and my out of pocket would be $180.

better than nothing.

I think you are correct, sir. My new unit pairs much quicker and seems to connect from phone and away from phone faster than before.

I am running an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0 Beta 7. WORKS AMAZING!

By the way, love your new avatar.

$56 because dealer repaired? Or you got a killer deal on the unit?

Yes, the 30 minutes after car off is a nice feature, but it has its problems too. The other day I was talking on my phone long after parking and as soon as I got within bluetooth range of my car it paired and took over the call, but I had long turned off the car... so the call was in limbo. I wasn't sure how to resieze the call on my phone so I was forced to use my phone far away from my car. This is with the new unit.

Hfl

i'm having issues with my HFL as well. can someone please tell me if its my HFL or a plug somewhere that isn't plugged in..

my HFL pairs fine. i can make calls and clear and add numbers to the phonebook with no problem...

but the issue is i have no sound.. like when you press the call button. you will usually hear the beep sound and such. well i paired my phone without the sound. i can tell it to call a number and it will call it but no voice confirmation in the car. "the female voice" is what some of us here call it.

i'm thinking that its my HFL unit. but can it be a unplugged plug somewhere that controls the audio for this?

usually when i press the call button my stereo will mute. but in this case it doesn't. my stereo will keep playing and if i tell it to make it a call it will make the call, because i see my phone dialing and on the MID but the stereo won't mute and HFL doesn't have any sound.

can someone confirm with me that the HFL has gone bad and its not a unplug plug somewhere?

this is driving me nuts!@~#@!#

check your mic...maybe it has shit in it?!? Mic is in the upper console.

WOW, if the guy at the dealer had offered me 80% I would have jumped on that.
