Acura Dealership: $3000 to fix a button...please help!
The zoom in-out button on my Nav unit had been lose for a while. Last month, I was pressing the down on it and the next thing I know my screen starts zooming out all the way. The internal button is stuck on that down stroke of the zoom button (zoom out). So basically, all buttons on my nav (Menu, Info, Setup, Audio, etc.) are useless because the jammed zoom button overrides them. I removed the black plastic button and tried to pull out the white toggle of the broken button but with no luck. (See below for picture. Better quality pic available if necessary.)
I took it to Acura yesterday and they informed me there is nothing I can do except replace the ENTIRE nav unit. Honda USA does not fix/work on the nav head units, just the trunk units. He said it is one entire circuitboard and that I would have to replace the entire unit. He said there was no way to disable that button (which I would be okay with).
There are two main problems that this button issue causes:
#1 - I can still use the nav via a combination of voice commands and the touch screen. It's just more tedious and time consuming, especially when the voice reco doesn't work that well.
#2 - I am not able to access the audio screen at all. I have XM and we do a lot of long drives (about to make 3 trips of 2k miles each over the next few weeks) so the audio screen is really handy. I read a thread with voice commands to go to the audio screen but had no luck. I have tried every voice command you can think of to go to the Audio screen and there is not one that works (also confirmed by dealer).
I would be happy to disable that button if it is not possible to repair. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the link! I was searching for ebay but must have used some terms that provided a different result as I didn't see that one. I'll have to keep an eye on it.
Outside of replacing my unit, any other suggestions from the group?

You might want to try a can of that spray electronics cleaner they sell at stores like Radio Shack. It wouldn't hurt the components and may free the stuck button. At least it would be an attempt at a cheap fix before you have to go to more drastic measures.

its a switch. it can always be taken apart and either broken off or soldered off. i think its just something stuck try cleaning it with the car off then try it, if that dont work try moving it around with car off again ( i would try something non conductive like the inside of a pen or even a toothpick)

Well, that worked for a few minutes last night but then my wife got in the car this morning and said that it wasn't working anymore. Last night, I sprayed the electronics cleaner on the button and let it sit for a minute or so. Then I took some forceps and kept grabbing and pulling on the button while pushing other buttons. All of a sudden, the other buttons started functioning. But it must have settled back into the on position. I wonder if there is anything I can do to make this more permanent.

Check to see if you have a small electronics repair shop in your area. I know here in fort Lauderdale we have two that I have had good luck with and one of them specializes in repairing of OEM audio equipment.

I work for a GM dealer and most of what the dealer is telling you is correct. There are only a few buttons we can replace on a radio anything else has to go to one of GM's authorized repair centers.
The thing that I dont think they are being up front about is that they dont repair your radio. They exchange them for an already repaired unit. And the price they gave you is WAY more than any GM radio (including Navs) than I have ever priced. Most of our exchanges are in the 300-500.00 range. Still not cheap but a lot cheaper than 3K! Hell we sell the new GM Nav radio's for ones that are damaged or stolen for around 1900.00 to customers.
Good luck.
