06 - Navi to Non-Navi Swap
I've used the search option but can only find articles on going to NON NAVI to NAVI. Forgive me if I missed the correct article.
SO I looking at pulling my screen and swapping in the Non Navi control panel and then mounting a nice 7" touchscreen in place of the factory 6 disc. Now based on the female plugs when comparing the 2 it looks like the connections are there and compatible for controlling the HVAC. The Navi one obviously has one extra plus for everything associated with that. So it brings me to the obvious question, has anyone ever done this? Did it work? Any associated issues? CEL? Or does is it plug and play and you just get rid of the Navi associated hardware (doubt it'll be that easy). Please let me know anyone has some insight on this. Thanks in advance and again apologize if I missed the thread on this. Mike |
There are a few threads on non navi to navi conversion.
Here is one: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-a...-05-tl-622349/ |
Also why not do non navi to tablet conversion?
|
I wanted to do that more than anything! But looked hard at all the available swap threads and I guess I just didn't get the info I was looking for especially when it came to 2 things 1) a very detailed list of materials and parts needed for a successful install and most importantly a specific wiring diagram on rewiring HVAC control wires to main harness to maintain factory function. I'm sure I could figure it all out but with 3 full builds on my trucks in progress (1 on a 96 cummins, another on an 06 cummins and a 3rd on a 93 powerstroke - also have a 71 cutlass I'm tinkering with) I'm just too overwhelmed to even think about trying to mess with that harness without a factory manual or a schematic on that wiring set up. If you can point me in that direction of information I'd be equally as thrilled but as I just replaced the DVD ROM for the Navigation that I pretty much got for free and the 6 disc factory radio not working I'm just sick of the dated screen and the crappy radio in these things. I remember when I bought my old '03 s-type in 04 with 14k and I went through 3 CD players and 5 transmissions before 50k. With the TL being so far ahead of it's time in it's class there are 2 things they just could never get right and that was their 6 disc stereos and their automatic transmissions. Reason I vowed never to buy another TL with a manual or doing a 6 speed swap on a 2nd gen J32a2 has always been a dream of mine. That car is still so stylish. Absolutely LOVE the front end and the sleek, smooth low pro design.
Wow got off topic there, sorry....excited to be back in an Acura and a apart of this forum. People on here are so much more cool than on the diesel forums.

So looking at doing this as well NAV to non Navi. My Navi hard drive has stopped working and don’t want to spend the money on getting it fixed. Already tried to clean it but only get can’t read cd error. I see a few hvac controls for non Navi on eBay for $50-80. Would it be a plug and play swap? Have 2006 TL with tape deck. Will probably sell the car in the next year so don’t want to drop a bunch of money on the swap. I feel selling a car with out Navi is better than selling one with non working out dated Navi. |
I'm looking at doing the same thing on my 04 TL because the DVD player is non functional and way to costly to repair.
Seems like there must be a way to bypass that dvd player to at least get back control of basic functions like a/c control and engine stats. I'll probably get a non navi unit out of a TL at LKQ and see if it has wiring that is compatible with a navi equipped car. If not I'll just return it. |
I just ordered a non Navi display yesterday on eBay. I should get it early next week. I’ll post up if it’s plug & play and if it works. |
I'm looking forward to your results. Good luck.
|
ghernz, I'm in the same spot as others on this thread: the navigation unit won't read the DVD, so I have lost access to basic functionality co-located in that panel. Can't wait to hear your results.

OP, is your username your email???
Haven't seen that before. |
All the dead Nav units need the drive mechanism replaced, the only mechanical part of the system. I bit the bullet a couple of years ago and sent it to Alpine.

$358 .... Ouch, but looking back, worth it. . |
I recently checked with Alpine. They wanted over $450.

Ok I've got the non navi panel. Everything was plug and play. There is an extra connector for the navi unit. I left it unplugged. The only thing that I have noticed that I lost was the clock. I'm good with that as I couldn't adjust the time without the navi screen/hard drive. I used the youtube video below to figure out how to remove the navi panel. Four screws on the sides and two on the bottom to remove panel from radio assembly. The non navi panel I received from Ebay had connectors on it. You will not need them as the ones from navi panel will plug right in.

Thanks ghernz. Good info. I'll start trying to find a non-navigation panel....
|
Great job! I'm off the LKQ for a non- navi panel. I also need an amplifier. I hope to get out for about $100.

I just got back from the local Honda junkyard. They had 5 TLs, but only one didn't have nav. I was able to pull the non-nav panel from it, and also bought the non-nav clock, which has the typical Honda buttons to set the time. I'll try to find the time to install them this week.

Let us know if the clock plugs in. I am seeing two different plug connectors. Green is Navi and blue is non Navi. You might have to get the non Navi connector and cut & splice wires. |
I installed the non-navi panel over the last weekend. It was relatively painless, and works perfectly. Thanks again to ghernz. I'll look at the wiring for the clock sometime later. Next job is to replace the clutch slave cyl. Let's hope the weather cooperates.

I'm about to do the navi to non navi swap and I also want to change the clock to the non navi clock. I see your point about the connectors being different. I found the pin out for the navi plug but couldn't find the non navi one. Whats your best guess at which 4 pins are used for the non-navi ?

very interested to see if the non navi clock will work.

I haven't attempted the clock swap yet because my 05 navi to 07 non navi climate coontrol swap was not successful. I am trying to figure out why it's doing what it is doing but it's giving me issues. I know if I go with an 05 non navi it will be plug and play but I want the 07 since it's looks much more up to date. |
So it looks like numbers 1,2,9,10 are the wires that would be needed. It would be best to find the non navi connector specs, I'm assuming the non navi clock really only needs a power, ground, illumination (for dimming) and maybe memory keep wires.

This is all I was able to find so far, I just did a quick look through the manual. I would have to look around some more when I have time and see if I can find anything else.

Did you get this figured out? I would match wire colors from non navi to navi connectors. Let us know if you got it to work.

The clock is in and working !!
Heres how I did it: (pictures attached after all of my text, (sorry new to Acurazine)) The plug for the clock has 4 wires coming off of it, as shown in one of the wiring diagrams posted above, here is where I tapped them into in the factory radio harness (blue clip): Clock location ---> radio plug location Cavity 1 (white/red, constant power) ----> A10 (white, constant power) Cavity 2 (yellow, Ignition) ---> A2 (yellow/red, Accessory) Cavity 3 not used Cavity 4 (black, ground) ---> A20 (black, ground) Cavity 5 (red/blue, lights on signal) ---> A20 (black, ground) I initially attached cavity 5 to A9, however the clock shut off when the lights were turned on. I believe this is due to the fact the cavity 5 is a (-) lights on signal, while I believe A9 is a (+) lights on signal. I didn't really hunt around for a (-) lights on signal since the brightness changing really didn't bother me. I decided to just ground the lights on signal wire. This allows it to be, what I believe, is "max brightness" regardless if the headlights are on or not. The clock still functions perfectly, turns on with the first click of the key, and off when the key is off. Remembers the time just as it should. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...6110e02e2.jpeg Clock Plug with wires soldered on to extend the length https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...2f03e57092.jpg Blue radio plug pinout https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...8542bd4309.jpg Connector A (blue radio plug) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...67d8f8801.jpeg all 3 of the radio wires tapped into https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...318897391.jpeg All done !!! |
Update, I used the red/blue wire from the large climate control plug for the dimming wire on the clock. The clock now functions 100% and dims as the lights are tuned on. Aka... clock plug ---> climate control plug cavity 5 (red/blue, lights on) ---> cavity A7 (red/blue, lights on) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...e69c1cedd7.png Wiring pin out for large green plug on the bottom of the climate control screen |

I think this is gonna be my summer time project this year. My nav unit works fine and all but its out dated, I mean 2014 is the last map cd I can get :( So I figure I'll do this swap and then install a double din touchscreen. I was wondering if it would be possible to do the 07-08 non-nav switch the wires thats needed, install the non-nav clock and still get it to work??? |
