Are you Still buying the Correct Gas (Octane)?

I'm Northern Virginia, just wondering if you all are still treating your Babies right? With 91 or better. I saw $3.08 for high test today.

I'll only use Sunoco, Hess or BP. All 3 are 93, does anyone know if stations even sell 91?

Very few around here sell the 91 so I've been going with the 93. I paid 2.98 yesterday.

I only use 93, only used it on my 03 type s and only use it now. If you can afford a 33k vehicle then you can spend 20 cents more per gallon. In the end you would only save pennies. I'm in NY. but have seen 91 octane the highest grade in places like Phoenix Arizona, maybe the weather thee doesnt warrant 93 octane..I don't know.
I actually averaged 31 miles per gallon going to Atlantic City the other day and it hit 32 for about a 50 mile stretch..according to the trip computer..thought that was great considering the sticker has 29 mpg maximum.

Still using 93 here, and had to pay $3.09 when I gassedup today. 93 octane is pretty much the standard around DFW, but last weekend when I was out on the bike (1200 miles up to St. Louis and back), most of the rural stations only had 91. The prices were cheaper once I got out of Texas, but since the octane dropped as well, I'm not sure that it was really a significant difference in price.

it cost more than 20 cents per gallon. your math does not work where I live.

OH by the way Regular is about 3.75/gallon today. There is difference between 2.50/gal and 4.00/gal premium

Out here in the Mountains, the three grades readily available are 85, 87 & 91. Hard to find anything 93+, probably due to the altitude.

I only paid about $2.75/gallon for the 91, so I can't complain compared to the prices listed here. Looks like it's only gonna go higher the closer we get to summer.

I had the same issue with my BMW that required 91 or 93. I always used 93 when I lived in Upstate NY, but could only find 91 here in CO. The car felt a bit sluggish. I either got used to it or it adjusted to the lower octane over time.

wait, so your saying your premium is 1 dollar, 25 cents more, per gallon, then regular where you live?

Paid $2.949 yesterday evening in western Prince William County for BP (Amoco) 93. On Thursdays, this station has a "cents off" day for 93 to the tune of 7 cents off.

Yes, I only fill up with premium (93 in Chicago).

If you can't afford to fill up with the gas your car requires, then you should have bought a different car.

Yes, there is 91 in my area but it cost the same as 93. More coperate greed.

I still use the correct octane gas. I will always use the "good stuff" regardless of what gas prices are. Around here, the difference in price between premium and regular gas is only about $0.20/gallon, so it wouldn't make that much of a difference in filling up the tank.

So can anyone fully explain why gas prices have jumped $0.60-$0.70/gallon in the last 6 weeks? I honestly have NO IDEA whatsoever (other than certain entities being greedy).

About a $3 or so difference on a fillup and for the extra perfomance and slightly better gas mileage, its a no brainer in my book.

I only use 93 octane. Paid $2.81 on Monday to fill up. The price diff per grade is $0.10 each.

For the 15 gallons on average that I fill each week, it costs me an extra $3.00, hardly a bank breaker. You save more money learning how to drive where you maximize your mileage - easy starts, easy braking, rolling into and out of the throttle.

For most of you, your car is a hobby; i.e. adding custom touches, car clubs, etc. Looking at it that way, the bump in gas prices is irrelevant.

You can get 91 in Prince William County at Sunoco stations because they filled the spot where they had 94 with the 91. Personally I'll just stick to the 93.

Come on people we are driving around in 35k cars and you are telling me you have to buy the lower grade gas to save yourself a FEW bucks per tank?!

Tl has a 17 gallon tank
Lets say on average premium costs .25 more (which is a high estimate)
Most of us probably fill up once a week or 52 times a year

so

if you are running the car to empty which I am sure no one does on a regular basis, but for this example I will use a 17 gallon fill.

17x.25=$4.25 a tank
$221.00 a year

You people should be able to spare an extra 18.42 a month or you are living beyond you means and should not be driving a TL. All of us are dealing with the higher gas prices but the little extra to run the required fuel should not be an issue.

I assume you live in Canada like myself? I normally pay 11cents more per litre to get premium gas. I agree with what OvaDaTop and csilano said, if you can't afford 11cents more per litre (i.e. 50L * 0.11 = $5.50) then I don't think you should buy a car like the TL.

Great Post! People are just realing from "sticker shock".

What's going on now is nothing compared to the late '70's when gas ran up from $0.35 per gallon to over a buck in less than a year. My meager college budget was severely strained, even with a then brand-new Datsun B-210 (what a P.O.S.!).

The most ironic thing is that my TL gets much better mileage than the Datsun did, and it was a four-speed manual with no a/c! Try living in the swamps of southern Louisiana in the summertime without a/c.

gurney - definitely not longing for the "good old days".

I only see 91 here in San Diego.....maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I paid $3.19 for 91 octane last night. I miss the days in high school when I looked for the 85 octane for $.63 a gallon.

Is your age listed correctly? The cheapest I could find gas for when I was 16, was $.99 per gal, and that was at a shit hole. I'm 32 in two weeks, so that was 16 years ago.

I recall paying $0.89/gallon to fill up my old Buick Century when I was in high school. I was 16 and had just recently gotten my license. That is the lowest I can recall ever paying for gas.

EDIT: This was at a RaceTrac here in Clermont, FL.

Maybe the regional cost differences, but I can't imagine seeing gas for $.63 per gallon unless that dude was in high school in the 60's.

I was 16 in 1990, and in the Chicago area, I was lucky enough to find gas for $0.99 per gallon (and that was rare).

Man! I can't imagine filling up my TL for $17 (dry tank)!

I tell you what, I don't dance, but I think I would in the gas station parking lot if I could pay anywhere NEAR $1.00 for a gallon of gas today!

In small town Indiana I paid $.63 the first time I filled up 8 years ago. That was back when the state excise tax on gasoline was $.10/ gallon.

OK, Here a true story for ya. Back in 1968 or so. I had a 55 Bellaire Convert, with a hand built Corvette 327. We used to go out cruzen at lunch from high school. We would empty out our pocket change. And fill the tank with 103 oct. I remember the best reg. gas price of $.17 per gal. My friend said he say $.14!! Man life was good!! So was the gas. Pink/purple and smelled great. And lasted over the winter. Not like now where shelve life is aprox 3 weeks!!!

Thats my story.... True it is......

what Im saying is I need to pay $4.00 a gallon for regular soon where as you pay $2.50 for premium. That is a big difference to my pocket. So therefore some parts of this conutry will not be using premium as much.

I use 91 as it is all the stations I go to have. Sunoco has a 94 but not one convenient for me. I have to admit I did put 89 in once back after hurricane katrina hit as gas here in Canada skyrocketed to 1.50 a litre the day I needed it and I can honestly tell you I won't do that again. I definately felt a performance shift in the car. NOT GOOD!!!
