Are you a step-tronic expert?

I have read that the TL's optimium HP and tourque is obtained at about 4700 RPMS. I have been trying to drive the car via manually using the step-tronic in an attempt to get top peformance by accessing the sweet spot (4700 RPMS) in the the right gear.

Does have a feel and/or think they know the optimium gear for top performance when you hit 4700 RPMS? With out the feel of the clutch and gas, it is hard to determine if you need to shift or not.

im not a "step-tronic" expert as i have the 6mt myself.

now.... the tl's maximum hp isnt reached until 6200 rpm, meaning, if your looking for all out speed thats where the most power is. the tl has a FLAT torque curve. it produces 200 ft lbs at the wheels from 3000 rpm on up, so you will feel a decent pull anywhere from 3000 on up to redline. the only time it drops is toward redline, but horespower is at its highest at that point. there normally is a small spike in the torque curve from 4700 to 5200 on the curve. for around town driving as long as you are above 3000 rpm you should be fine. if you are "racing" you should wind it out as far as you can. thats where this car loves to be "on the cam" but fuel mileage tends to be poor when racing it that hard.

also do you have a gas pedal? you said "without the feel of the clutch and GAS it is hard to determine if you need to shift or not." if you dont have one, you should have that looked at

you dont need the clutch to determine that, you should be able to hear and feel if the car wants to shift.... if cruising let the auto do its thing.... thats why you bought it right? if you want to have a little fun, wind it out and shift close to redline. but just cruising the car should never get above 4000-4500 as you just dont need to.

one final thing, please try to read you post before posting them here. yours was a little difficult to read.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought the TL's max torque is 238 ft/lbs? Am I wrong and you are right at 200 ft/lbs. If 238 is the max, at what RPMs is it obtained? 4700-5200?

Does anyone have a link to a graph of the TL's torque and hp output?

The objective of this thread was to determine at what RPMs and in which gear is max torque and acceleration achieved with the step-tronic transmission?

Cheers,

Jimmy

P.S - I looked and yes my 50k car came with a gas pedal

you are right it is 238, but that is at the flywheel. what i quoted was at the wheels... which is 200 or so. there are driven train losses that have to be takin into acct. for an auto its approx 18-22% and for a manual like 15-18%. so for example if your car has 238*.80= 190 (20% is lost, 80% makes it to the wheels). manuals are more efficent so the show up a little higher. most have 200 at the wheels with a peak of 208 at the 5000rpm. most of the graphs i have seen the absolute peak is at 5000 for torque and 6200 rpm for hp

for max acceleration you need to run it out to redline. thats where the tl is the fastest. torque and hp are mathmatically connected. and its alot to explain. but trust me when i say for maximum acceleration, higher you are in the tl the better.

the most acceleration is going to be in first gear at 5000 rpm.... as this is when the gearing is most favorable for acceleration. and you want a little rpm to work with before you hit red line. so if you are racing from a roll. put it in manual shift mode. bring the car up to that in 1st (kinda slow). let it sit there for a moment and then jump on it..... the amt of pull will probably surprise you.... run it up to redline, the computer will auto shift (another reason i dont like the auto) the rpm should drop back to 4750-5000 rpm and it will run up again.... make sure YOU shift from 2ND to 3RD....

here is a link to a previous post with a few dyno curves

hope this helps... if you have anyother questions just ask
